#4792 suggests bypassing g.is_binary_string

#4792 suggest a simpler, faster, safer way of determining whether a file is a binary file: look at an extensible list of known binary file extensions.

I'm not sure g.is_binary_string has ever worked reliably. It's time to do without it.
