PR #4783 is now in Leo's "devel" branch.

This is an emergency fix that undoes huge blunders in a previous PR. The event kwarg must default to None almost everywhere. My apologies for this screw-up.

The PR also probably fixes #4784 and temporarily works around #4778 by disabling g.is_binary_string.

PR #4783 is a big step in the right direction, but more work may be needed. Please keep testing!
