As of rev 4148, Leo will put up a splash screen while loaded.

I like this a lot, but you can disable the feature by removing leo/
Icons/SplashScreen.jpg.

I just noticed that the present file has a copyright notice. I would
welcome suggestions for non-copyrighted images of a Leo "mascot".

I would like to point that this isn't the best approach (even if it
seems to be the simplest). For example, for people running leo
straight from its repo (I am one of them) removing that file would
mean altering the repo. Please consider to add a config setting for
this which could go into myLeoSettings. I think this is the lightest
possible way to add flexibility (a command line argument for this
would probably force those people who run leo via custom shell wrapper
scripts to change them).

I don't think that is possible, as config settings get read after the
splash screen goes up.

A command-line options would be possible...

Done at the trunk at rev 4156. The --no-splash command-line option
suppresses the splash screen. In addition, Leo puts up no splash
screen when the --silent or --script command-line options are given.

Try something here:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Search&search=lion+svg

(did "lion svg" search on wikimedia commons, which should all be ok
for our usage).

I'll take a look at more substantial topics later, right now I'm a bit
washed away due to return from california & adjusting to 10 hour time
difference...)

It, and the code to draw it, are on the trunk at rev 4172.

Where did the original come from? I made a bitmap version for the pypi windows binary installer but rescaling the .ico produces some uglies. It would be better to work from a vector source, if possible.

So you open two browser windows. Go to http://images.google.com/ in
one. Go to a web page holding an image of interest in the other. Drag
the image in the second into the search text box in the first. Google
is scary sometimes.

interesting! I didn't know Google could do that. Up to today I'd use www.tineye.com for similar image searching, but it didn't turn up anything like what you just demonstrated. Oh, you can restrict to `filetype:svg` also, neat. Thanks :)

Dreamstime must not be the original source though as it's for a fee and watermarked. The other copies that I found on different sites aren't any better resolution than Leo's. In any case, what I've got now is good 'nuff for the time being.

Hi:
Im having troubles with it. When I open a file, and leo thinks its already open, the confirmation wether if its open / open new appears behind the splash screen, and if I keep opening and closing Leo files this becomes very anoying.
There is no "splashscreen.jpg" in leo/icons
I wouldnt mind if it was not on top, so any Leo popups appear on top of the splash screen.
Is there currently any way to disable it?

leo --help shows you the options. One of them is --no-splash.

Afaik, I've never had a splash screen hide a dialog. What platform
are you using?

Windows 7
The thing is my main Leo file opens other leo files on start up, and when leo thinks they are already open, popups begin to appear asking if its already open or not.
Great, will switch the --no-splash right away, thanks.

Matt,
I attach here some files, both svg, png and ico, that I made myself of the lion head and of the pixelated icon used by Leo, in case you might find them useful. Personally, as a logo, I prefer the pixelated lion face to the lion head: it's a bit "retro" but with more personality.

Thanks for the svg version. I tend to like the pixelated lion head as well, the whiskers poking out past the frame add some dynamism, something large about to break forth, plus there's a sense of play that appeals to me. It works well for an icon but I think for a splash screen it's a bit too rough (personal opinion. Edward's the one who carries the show here though ;-)

...hmm, maybe I can talk my kids into building a Minecraft replica of the icon. Then it would be both retro and modern!

I created an enhancement ticket to help track this, https://github.com/leo-editor/leo-editor/issues/51

Well done. Am I correct in assuming that "leo splash.svg" is free
from copyright?

Well, as far as I am concerned my file "leo splash.svg" is definitely free of any copyright,
but the original image of the lion head appears to be still on sale as a royalty free stock image by the vendor Dreamstime (http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-photos-tribal-lion-image3490018).
You can see the watermark with the dreamstime logo in the image used on leoeditor.com.
The author of the image, nicknamed Sebast1an (http://www.dreamstime.com/sebast1an_info), has made available an Adobe vector format, easily convertible to svg.

In my humble opinion, however, Leo deserves an original logo to strengthen its identity and increase awareness.
Perhaps it could be worth to hire the services of a professional graphics designer; as an example, a customized logo can be bought from $395 on fotolia.com (http://www.fotolia.com/Info/Logos).
The cost could be covered by donations (I would be happy to contribute); perhaps one could try with some crowdfunding on websites such as indiegogo.com (there are many).

Alternatively, one could call for free art contributions from the Leo (or other open) community. Again, I would be happy to participate.
I would also be happy to help in processing any graphics and create splash/icons with the new logo in any required format, both for Windows (ico) and Linux (png, svg) and for some popular Linux icon themes (such as Numix).
Just a few thoughts....

If the image is royalty free, what is the problem?

I like the image we have.

This is not a project that excites me.

Feel free to do so.
