Dear LenCD members,

you have seen the announcement of the LenCD coordinator post that Brian sent around (see below). As outgoing coordinator let me tell you that, while not without headaches, it is an exciting and rewarding assignment ! Please do share the announcement widely and encourage suitable candidates to apply.

In a few weeks LenCD completes its 7th year since its establishment in Berlin on 8 June 2004. It has made significant contributions since, has evolved from the early days and will likely play its role well in future. I cannot say that today we have left the fuzziness and sometimes polemic around capacity development behind us. The term, while coined to introduce new thinking, has (not surprisingly) also been "retro-fitted" to correspond to old mindsets. Yet, the good news is that capacity issues have continuously gained visibility in the development discourse and that it is increasingly Southern voices that call for it. By any rate, this offers an effective anchor to question, inform and help shape development practice - against the grain of "business as usual".

LenCD's core business is to facilitate systematic learning that informs policy and practice. There are no short cuts or quick recipes to this end.  Such learning takes place by asking questions, sharing ideas and approaches in this growing community and, quite importantly, beyond the "CD inside crowd". Part of the challenge is one of communicating intelligently to resonate with those coming at the same issues from different disciplines,  schools of thinking and interests. The complexity, dynamics, politics, soft dimensions, 'emergence' and contextual nature of CD continue to require a sustained learning and educational effort to search beyond inadequate conceptions.

Three years ago my assignment as coordinator started with the preparations for the High-Level Forum III in Accra. The incoming coordinator will now support the network on the way to the HLF IV in Busan and beyond. Momentum has been building up around the preparations. The Kigali LenCD partners meeting in February has focused the network's energies around priorities for the coming months, visioning also beyond Busan, and the new steering group represents the growing roots in all regions. The Cairo workshop "From Concepts to Implementation" that took place end March has set out an ambitious agenda for Busan by endorsing the Cairo consensus, around which we can converge with our respective energies.

We cannot expect miracles, but the steady advancing and nudging forward will continue. It is a good time to take LenCD onto the next level. While I will be retreating from my functions I will continue to be close to the network as an active and accessible member. The incoming coordinator can rely on an energetic Steering Group, and coordination team members that have really helped shift gear over the last 6 months. The new platform is but one visible reflection of this (www.LenCD.org).

My gratitude to all who have helped shape this network, who have contributed their share to a collective adventure, who have dared to venture beyond their own institutional confines, who have accompanied LenCD's evolution with constructive critique, and are drawing on the knowledge products for their daily work. It has been a privilege for me to facilitate and I am looking forward to see LenCD - all of us - even more connected and sharing, more 'closing learning loops' and more vocal in the future.

Kind regards
