Hello,
I am sorry if this topic has been brought before. I just stumbled into your APIs and tools and REALLY like them. I am new to Arduino and Raspberrypi but would like to integrate either to my next project. I am building an overlander camper and would love to control lights, locks, a/c, etc. with your tools and apis on either platform. Is it possible to control Lelylan "devices" over LAN with no internet access? I will be travelling out of internet coverage areas and it is a design consideration.
Thanks!

Hi Manuel,

I'm Andrea Reginato, CEO of Lelylan. First of all thanks a lot for writing us.

I'll go directly to the point. Right now Lelylan works on the cloud, and without an internet connection you can't do that much. On the other side there is a big room to experiment new solutions and I've two ideas I would love to propose for two reasons.

1. The first one is the i simply LOVE the idea of a tech overlander camper. Really!
2. The second one is that would be interesting for Lelylan to work on an "offline solution" as a side project.

That said, here are the two ideas I've in mind.

First Idea

The first one is to install the whole Lelylan infrastructure locally. Lelylan is based on microservices (mix of Ruby and NodeJS apps) and uses quite a lot of resources, but we would love to try to make it live on a Raspberry 2. If we're able to make Lelylan live on a PI2, then you could have the whole Lelylan infrastructure  locally, and make it accessible through WiFi or Bluetooth solution. This would need some time to be made.

Second Idea

The second one is to work at a lower level. Lelylan API can be split in two API levels.
  • Developers API - High level API which offers all the functionalities related to control, monitoring, realtime, functions, statuses and more.
  • Makers API - Low level API which offers the basic services to control and monitor a physical device.
A solution could be to use only the low level API and make up an app that works on them. The functionalities you could have would be limited, but enough to control and monitor your devices. In this case I would use Bluetooth.

Both of them are just a proof of concept and they need to be validated before starting, but, I wanted to share them with you. If you have the time to experiment with us, we would love to support you on this crazy adventure :) I would also love to know more about your experiences, to better understand how far I can move with tech explanations and eventual idea.

Have a great day.
See ya!

Hello Andrea,

Thanks for your quick response and for coming up with ideas on how to solve my "problem". I wish I could be more helpful but electronics and programming are a little alien to me.  I just bought a couple of books on Arduino and RaspberryPi with the idea to "control" things around the camper electronically rather than electrically (especially lights). We are from Guatemala and a bit paranoid about security so I would like to have things like panic buttons and being able to monitor outside activity from the safety of a locked camper.

I will be travelling with one full size computer and at least 2 tablets (Windows) so, if needed a tablet or the computer would be able to run the whole Lelylan infrastructure on a beefier system. It is my understanding that the RasberryPi 2 will be able to run some version of Win 10... perhaps you could develop something on Win 10 that has wider appeal than just Rasberry Pi. On the other hand, I really don´t need a lot of functionalities beyond being able to monitor cameras... I am choosing wide angle POE dome cameras with fixed focus and NO pan, tilt or zoom for simplicity and perceived ruggedness.

About my experiences and my knowledge level, I considered myself a bit of a power user (computer wise) but I love learning new things and being challenged, so if you go technical on me, I am confident that I will catch up... eventually!

Thank you for taking interest in my crazy little project.

Regards,

Manuel Ralda

Hi Manuel,

sorry for the delay, but many things are on the way and few days of holidays were needed.

That said, thanks for getting back with some details. For sure the computer would be enough to run the whole Infrastructure, although we do not use Windows based systems, but linux ones. That said, I see a couple of possible issues.

1. The need of some tech background to make the installation of Lelylan. It's not impossible, but neither easy. Right now we're thinking about building "one package" to easily install it, but it will not be available before 3 months from now.
2. The integration with a camera would be a great experiment for us, as far as we didn't made one with that specific device. Being experimental, could take some time to be realised. Other devices (e.g. panic buttons, lights) are surely easy to implement.

Unluckily we do not have people to insert in this research project (at the momento), and you should be able to take care of all points. If you love challenges, I think this is a great one, and I would love to follow you, maybe organising the whole project from a bottom up point of view, starting with the simple things and then moving to the hard ones. In this way we can understand how far we can move step by step.

Have a great day Manuel.
Best,
