SlimmingWorld is a weight loss organisation based in Derbyshire in England that caters for men and women[3] of all ages. It was founded in Derbyshire in 1969 by Margaret Miles-Bramwell, who remains its chairperson.[2]

The company began in 1969 with a handful of groups in Derbyshire before expanding into Yorkshire. By the 1980s, Slimming World had 700 classes in the UK and by 2012 there were more than 10,000 groups, making it the largest slimming club in the UK and Ireland.[citation needed]

In 2001, the company launched a referral scheme in which GPs could "prescribe" 12 weeks' attendance to patients wishing to lose weight. In 2011, a paper in the journal Obesity Facts showed patients attending at least 10 sessions achieved a clinically significant loss of 5% of their body weight.[6]

Slimming World now works with about 60 UK health authorities and more than 100,000 patients had been referred by April 2011.[7] It also signed the Government's Public Health Responsibility Deal, in which participants pledged to help the public eat more healthily and exercise more.[8]

In its 2014 guidance, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence lists Slimming World alongside the Rosemary Conley and Weight Watchers programmes as being "effective at 12 to 18 months".[9]

Slimming World encourages members to introduce physical activity into their everyday routines. It introduces this gently with activities such as walking up stairs instead of taking the lift. Members get bronze, silver, gold and platinum awards as their activity levels increase, achieving platinum when they routinely exercise or undertake 30 minutes' activity five times weekly.[10] Since 2011, Slimming World has helped more than 150,000 people to become more active.[8]

Slimming World works in partnership with the Royal College of Midwives and is the first national slimming organisation to support pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers to manage their weight healthily during pregnancy.[11] Its policy was written in collaboration with the college and mothers take part with the consent of their midwife.

Managing weight is key to reducing other health risks and we want to work with health professionals to offer a solution. Slimming World is a well-established organisation with an effective evidence based programme focusing on nutrition, physical activity and behaviour change. Their consultants offer support, friendship and inspiration in a virtual or in person group.

Please only apply once for the Wyre weight management programme per year. Multiple applications by the same person will not be accepted. Applications can take 7-10 days to process so please wait to be contacted.

Providing support to women throughout all stages of life is something Slimming World is proud to offer. Many members join Slimming World after gaining weight during a pregnancy. They can then be worried about falling back into less healthy eating habits and regaining excess weight during subsequent pregnancies. More than 20 years ago, knowing how excess gestational weight gain can increase the risks to mum and baby, Slimming World opened their doors to pregnant members to offer support. Since then, we have worked closely with the RCM to develop our pregnancy policy and ensure we can safely support members throughout their pregnancies, with a focus on developing healthy behaviours and preventing excess weight gain, rather than weight loss.

Eating a healthy, balanced diet and preventing excess weight gain is important for health at any time in life. During pregnancy, when the benefits can extend to the unborn baby and the wider family, this can feel even more valuable. Taking small steps in becoming more active also has significant benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing during pregnancy, birth and post-natally. Pregnancy can be a key time to offer support as mums-to-be can often be more open to making behaviour changes.

Slimming World invests in ongoing evaluation and development of our programme to ensure we continue to stay up to date with the latest evidence and national guidelines. We also publish research to add to the scientific literature in key areas. Our Nutrition, Research & Health function is comprised of registered nutritionists and dietitians, plus experts in psychology, food data and research. In addition, we are supported by a specialist advisor panel, including experts in the fields of nutrition, activity, psychology and behaviour change.

Visit slimmingworld.co.uk/health for more information about our approach and the underlying science, and our factsheet contains information on how Slimming World supports pregnant and breastfeeding members, including our policy.

It includes valuable advice for women who are trying for a baby, are already pregnant or mums who have a newborn, including information about eating well, staying active, living a healthier lifestyle and managing weight.

Midwives can order Slimming World cards, which include a link to the Slimming World/RCM website (mentioned above), to give to women who are interested in accessing information on a healthy lifestyle before, during and after pregnancy.

Slimming World has worked with the RCM to develop an online course to help midwives and midwifery support workers to support pregnant women with healthy weight management. The module, which takes approximately 90 minutes to complete, includes information, practical tips and audio examples to enhance the learning experience. RCM members can click here to access the course free of charge.

The RCM website is published by The Royal College of Midwives. Midwives magazine, Evidence Based Midwifery and Midwives Jobs are published by Redactive Publishing Ltd on behalf of The Royal College of Midwives.

Just that really. I have about seven stone to lose and have tried everything to lose weight but I just end up half-arsing it and going back to my binge eating. The only plan I've ever actually lost weight is Slimming World but all I seem to see on social media is people calling it out as a "cult" or saying it's inevitable that you put the weight back on again.

Surely that's the same with most diet plans - calorie counting for example. When you stop cc you will put the weight on unless you have addressed the reasons why you overeat. Also a lot of the accusations levelled at SW are that they encourage you to eat massive portions of things like Miuller lights, but surely just because something is free you wouldn't expect to lose weight after eating five of them!? I think being as fat as I am means that no diet plan is going to work unless I actually stay consistent with it, which is my downfall. I don't think it's necessarily SW's fault of people do end up abusing the plan.

I have tried hypnosis, calorie counting, weight loss shakes and plans like Second Nature and nothjng works. Perhaps I'm a masochist and only feel motivated by attending a group where I have to explain myself. I know that ultimately I need to stick to it for it to work.

I'm just interested to hear others opinions before I sign up next week.

It's just a low calorie diet really. It works for me but I've had to work hard at it when I'm feeling a bit wobbly.

Mumsnet isn't keen on the group clapping etc and many thing we all eat Diet Coke chicken... I never have and mostly cook casseroles, curries, salads and eat lots of fruit and yogurt.

If you stick to it 100% you'll notice the difference and it's really helped me. I wouldn't be able to stick to all the weighing involved in calorie counting.

My opinion on SW is that most people return time and time again, which proves that it isn't a long term fix. Often they gain back more than they weighed at the start as well. Even the leaders tend to regain the weight they initially lost and end up starting again. I hate the clapping and the slimmer of the week award etc, I found it all very cringe at the meeting's I did attend. Yes you will probably lose the weight if you stick at it, but you'll most probably not keep it off long term. I think a healthy approach to eating/exercise is the only long term way to lose weight and keep it off, however I know that's so much easier said than done because I currently need to lose 2 stone myself.

You'll get lots of people saying it doesn't work because when they follow it and eat healthy food they lose weight, then when they go back to eating lots of crap they gain weight again - and think the fact that it works when they follow it is proof that it doesn't work ? ?

They encourage lots of fruit, veg, protein and high fibre foods, and discourage oils, butter, alcohol, white bread and highly processed foods.

It's not a "diet" that you "go on" for a short period - it's a new lifestyle that you can (and should) continue long term.

It's not a magic bullet that gives you special powers to eat loads of crap and stay slim. There's no such magic bullet.

Thank you for replying. It's really interesting though as I personally haven't seen that anyone at SW promotes or goes out of their way to promote mullerlights or mug shots (for example). I've never seen that in the literature or for it from a slimming club leader. Sure these things might be a free food but so is a punnet of strawberries. I just think that people find loopholes and run with it but that's not Slimming World as a company. I am not judging as I'm exactly the same. I drink a lot of wine and if I see one article saying that wine may have health benefits I will be all over it, ignoring all those that say that alcohol is bad. It's just the way we manipulate the rules.

i cant speak for anyone thats ever been on SW but i have never been told to eat monster foods to excess.
