cannot open previous workspace(s)

I moved to a new machine, installed the latest version (15.2), but when I
open a .lksw file from previous projects, I get nothing, and the
startup message - "no workspace".
Admittedly these are several versions old - but how to use them??
(I posted this on the github site - with no response.)
