Meg Davis, founder and executive director of Asia Catalyst, will talk about the health issues that marginalized communities in East and Southeast Asia face and the support Asia Catalyst provides to local grassroots groups working to combat these issues through training, coaching, advocacy, and research.

Free Kosher Pizza will be provided.

Attendance at this event counts towards the 5 required Leitner events to apply for summer funding.

Internships

 

INTERNSHIP, UNITED NATIONS PROJECT, INTERNATIONAL LAW AND PROTECTION PROGRAMME

Location: Geneva

The International Commission of Jurists is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the legal promotion and protection of human rights and the rule of law.

The ICJ is seeking an intern for a period of 4 months to work in its United Nations Project, to assist in research and drafting for ICJ interventions at United Nations institutions, and supporting various aspects of the work of the ICJ’s Representative to the UN. The intern’s duties will include:

           Legal research on human rights, including on issues of remedies and reparations, combating impunity, and integrity rights;

           Drafting of briefing notes on human rights issues related to ICJ advocacy messages at the United Nations, including advocacy to Permanent Missions at Geneva and the negotiation of resolutions of the Human Rights Council;

           Monitoring of news and developments, and meetings at the UN Office at Geneva, related to human rights at the United Nations;

           Assistance in organisation of ICJ workshops and events;

           Assistance with ongoing administrative tasks of the UN Project.

The post is based in Geneva and is only available on a full-time basis. The person selected must be available to begin work on Wednesday 6 June 2012.

            Nationals of non-EU countries are strongly encouraged to apply.The successful candidate will have:

           A degree in law, including the study of international law and international human rights law (apostgraduate degree is highly desirable);

           Excellent knowledge of public international law, including international human rights law and human rights protection mechanisms at the United Nations;

           Fluency in English (knowledge of French or Spanish would be an asset);

           Excellent research and drafting skils;

           High motivation and a demonstrated interest in human rights.

Conditions:

Unfortunately the ICJ is not in a position to offer any financial remuneration to interns. All interns are responsible for all expenses and costs incurred in undertaking an internship with the ICJ. On a discretionary basis the ICJ may offer a lunch allowance. The starting date of the internship is dependent on the delivery of a work permit from the Swiss authorities.

Texas Tech University Center for Biodefense, Law &Public Policy along with the Journal of Biosecurity, Biosafety, and Biodefense Law Announce the First Annual Writing Competition.

 

Topic: A current event within the biodefense community and its potential impact on the laws and regulations governing biodefense.

 

Prizes: First Place: $700 award,  the winning article will be published in the Journal of Biosecurity, Biosafety, and Biodefense Law, as well as the option to present at the Biodefense Center Symposium.  Second Place: $200 award. Third Place: $100 award. Additionally, all submissions have the potential of being read and judged by leading authorities in the Biodefense field.

 

Deadline: April 1, 2012. Winners will be announced May 2012
