Hi there,

Does someone know how to incorporate Nikkud + Trop marks into a Hebrew text? Is there a font in Word for example?

Thanks!

incorporate Nikkud + Trop marks into a Hebrew text?
I use DavkaWriter for many documents, and
I not only include vowels and Trope but also
their symbols for Kamatz Katan and Sh'va Na.

Davka recently released a pair of strengthened
programs to work directly with Word for TaNaKh.

Trope Trainer texts are customizable, and the
text alone can be printed with vowels & Trope.

Neil,

Thank you!

Does this mean we would have to acquire specific sw from Davka?

Yes.  DavkaWriter is now out in version 7, and it is
a very powerful Hebrew word-processing program.
I once was forced to use Dagesh, and there is just
no comparison with how much easier it is to use DW.

DW has built-in libraries of TaNaKh and Siddur texts,
along with many other useful texts.  You can purchase
many additional texts such as the Haggadah and the
HHD Machzor.

The other two programs are not from Davka, but from
TES.  They are "Bible ClipText for Word" and "Hebrew
Prayer Book ClipText for Word", and they seem to be
the old "copy and paste" format.  I have not yet used
these, since I find DavkaWriter to be such a good tool.

Sorry for the mix-up between Davka and TES.  I should
have known that Davka would not need to sell these two
ClipText programs, since they sell DavkaWriter.  I hope
that you have Trope Trainer - I can help you learn how
to prepare a custom text for printing (Chumash or STaM).

There is a font that can be downloaded to word called Ezra Sil SR (download URL:
I download the text from Mikra Net - press the button of ספרות הקודש, then press on the button of גירסת טעמי המקרא, open up the book and chapter, and then you can copy paste into Word, and then change the font to Ezra Sil SR.

sorry if I'm necroposting. or if this is off-topic, but I'm guessing that a lot of us are typing Hebrew as a basic part of our preparing/learning/teaching qeriya.

I use DW a lot, especially for text I'm preparing for qeriya practice, or for wherever it's important to be able to (a) have different colors for letters, niqqud, and ta`amim; or (b) differentiate qames qatan from gadhol or shewa nah from na`.

However, I do use Hebrew a lot in Word.  The usual unicode fonts (Ariel, Times Roman) are fine for letters and niqqud, but usually not for ta`amim.  If I'm using text with ta`amim I switch to Ezra SIL or SBL Hebrew.  Of course, Hebrew and a Hebrew keyboard must be added via Control Panel/Regional and Language Options/Languages/Add so that you can select "Hebrew" from the language bar..

I'd be happy to hear any tips people have for typing Hebrew in Word.

Hayyim

p.s.

Just in case you're adding vowels to Hebrew text in Word by using Insert/Symbol.....

The best time saver I discovered has been changing the "hot-key" combinations so that Ctrl+another key will give me niqqud (for adding ta`amim, I still use Insert Symbol).

I've set up the hot-keys to match (mostly) where the niqqud are in DavkaWriter.  Some adjustment is necessary because Word (and other Microsoft programs) will "capture" some hot-keys for its own use and trump your change.

To allow you to type a niqqud in Word easily (these directions are for Word 2007/2010, but I don't think it's very different from other versions):
Select "Insert"
Select "Symbol"
Select "More Symbols"
Select "(normal text)" for Font and "Hebrew" for Subset.
For this example let's do "shewa"
We want to associate the shewa with the numeral 7, because that's where the DW keyboard puts it.
Select Shewa in the box.
On the lower left, it should now say "HEBREW POINT SHEVA".
"Character Code" should read 05B0.
Click on "Shortcut Key".
The cursor should now be in a box "Press new shortcut key:"
Hold down the Ctrl key and press 7.
The box should now say "Ctrl+7"
On the lower left, click on "Assign".
"Close"
"Close"
In a word document, hold down the Ctrl key and press 7.  You should now see a shewa.  (If there is no Hebrew letter for it to go under, there will be a dotted circle to show you where the letter would be.)

Do this for all the niqqud, and if you type Hebrew with vowels as often as I do, you'll save plenty of time over using Insert/Symbol for each one.

Some of what you are doing is already available for TaNaKh texts that are
chanted aloud, in the Trope Trainer(tm) program from Kinnor Software.

That text comes with different symbols for Kamatz Katan and Sh'va Na,
and it is easy to make customized readings for teaching and preparation.

(306) 222-6061 if you want to discuss whether this might meet your needs.
The developer of Trope Trainer may also be able to have that discussion
with you.  Please let me know if you would like to speak with him (or me).

The SBL Hebrew keyboard layouts allow typing nikkud and taamim via shift key.
See here
The Regular Hebrew layout can also type nikkud by enabling caps lock and pressing shift key.
