Does anyone understand the concept of virtual gemination as it applies
to Hebrew. No matter how many times I read about it I just don't get
it.

In virtual gemination, the consonant is not doubled, but the vowel
under it is the vowel one would expect if it had been, and the
(preceding) syllable is considered closed. Jouon has a bit on it. It
is on google books and you can search for "virtual" to get the hits.

I have Jouon, and he's the one confused me about it! I will give it another stab and come back with what I don't understand. (It's something that's been bothering me for a while but I haven't had a chance to get to it, and then I was thinking about it recently with regard to kamatz katan.)

You should do a search on it. Many of the entries with some
information come after the initial mentions.
