Michael Leinen, his wife Barbara Bally, and their son John immigrated to the USA in 1857 on the packet ship Mercury.  They traveled with Michael's brother Jacob Leinen.  Also traveling with them was Margarethe Leinen but I am not sure yet if this was Jacob's wife.

Michael, Barbara, and John were first documented to have lived in Lake County, Illinois and Kenosha County, Wisconsin until the 1880s.  John married twice and went on to live in Iowa (Osceola county) then South Dakota (Hand and Brown county).  In 1892, he died in Groton, Brown county, SD.   Michael and Barbara Leinen moved to Osceola county Iowa (Ashton).  Barbara is buried in Ashton.

John's had two children from his first marriage (Michael and Susan Leinen Kappes).  Both lived their lives and raised families in Ashton, Iowa.

John had at least one son (Joseph Leinen) with his second wife Margarete Leinen.  After John's death in Groton, Maggie Leinen and  son Joseph moved to Ashton to be closer to family.  Eventually (1905-1910) they moved to Milwaukee where Joseph raised his own family.  Maggie died and is buried in Milwaukee.
