The tale is as old as the rusty port of Mangalore on which it is based, and has zilch new to offer. Which is why the focus shifts on to the treatment, and here Aashiq Abu does take a daring step forward and makes his gangster rooted firmly on the soil on which he stands. He is a man with some raw emotions, and does have the capability to accept defeat.

I guess a decree of sorts exists that categorize the women in gangster films into two categories - the ones that would be bumped off without a second thought, and the others who are destined to seductively adorn the villain's den. Sana Muhammed (Nyla Usha) falls into the former class, while Lily (Aparna Gopinath) almost makes it to the second group.

Kotta Madhu reminds us of a sophisticated 90s gangster, who eventually turns politician. As arrogant and ruthless as Madhu is, we also learn that he has a heart. The scenes between a younger Madhu and the small boy show his softer side, but we never get to know who Madhu really is and what his motivations are. He is plagued by constant guilt, an emotion which we repeatedly see in the film. And that is also his downfall.

Talk about the story and one will find cliched one-liners but Nirmal has his way with the storytelling. The screenplay jumps back and forth. Ranam can't be hailed as one memorable gangster thriller but definitely it will be among the thoughtfully crafted ones. The pace of the movie goes up and comes down abruptly.

The cinematography by Jigme Tenzing cannot be spared a mention for he creatively mops up the beauty of the place. Even the colour tone and setting for the climax shots perfectly sets the mood for a typical gangster drama.

Bheeshma Parvam is a gangster drama which follows the norms of the Anjootti family headed by Michael. The story is cerebral and layered and a welcome rendition of The Godfather. This is the skill that the writers of the Malayalam Film Industry possess. If Pada was a twisted rendition on Dog Day Afternoon then this is a layered rendition(and not adaptation) of The Godfather. And if I were to draw parallels from last year, it was Nayattu and Malik in 2021 as opposed to Pada and Bheeshma Parvam here. The screenplay is convoluted and requires every bit of your undivided attention especially in the first hour. You need to pay attention to the characters and keep pace with the proceedings because there are no easy answers here which are spoon fed. You need to form a family tree of the Anjootti family to understand the relations between the characters.

Once you are past that, you will be much more comfortable with following the proceedings. The twists and turns are engaging with an undercurrent of tension which is simmering. Make no mistake, the drama is a slow burn with multiple subplots which will add to the ambience of the film. This leads to a jaw dropping twist and this is when all hell breaks loose culminating into a terrific and stunning final act. The screenplay here must be applauded for its brilliance in creating a world which is convoluted yet the atmospherics make you want to explore it more. Outstanding as always!
