NEW ADDIS, Galactic Press Hyperrelay Report - In a move sure to take most in the galaxy by surprise, the Prime Minister of the Pantopian Parliament announced today that an accord had been reached with the Jovian Federation.  Recently, the two powers had been exchanging heated rhetoric, largely centered over mining rights in a hotly-contested system valued for its rich mineral deposits.  While the press release makes it clear that this agreement is in no way an alliance or treaty, the pact does assure that both powers will have the right to "Resource Exploration & Development" in the system, commonly referred to as 'Bharani.'  The agreement was apparently made without the knowledge of the Pantopian Military, who have yet to make a statement.  It was not announced who represented the Pantopians in these closed-door meetings, but initial speculation points to a member of the oft-reclusive Imperial Family, primarily due to a personal invitation by The Emperor to many Jovian heads of state.  More on this story as it develops.

[[Also, I have some things to add to the game.  One is an auto-fire mechanism for point defense weapons; it costs 2 power and will automatically fire on fighters or anything smaller in range with PD weapons.  Others we can probably do at game time.  It looks a little gross here now, but I don't anticipate much more than a delay in our start time tomorrow.]]

ISDA welcomes the Jovian Federation to the Bharani sector and is inspired by their desire for a peaceful reconciliation and by extension the condemnation of their former pirate allies. After their harsh rhetoric against necessary police actions in the area we reiterate our desire for all trade relations to resume in Bharani and are eager to avoid further belligerence. We request their support against enemies such as the Droog Navy. We await the actions that speak on the Jovian Federation's behalf.

Jovian-Pantopian Mining Accord Announced

Europa Capitol Colony Station-  In a press conference outside the Capitol Rotunda, Jovian Mining Corp. Chief Hurstag Vontner surprised everyone with the announcement of an agreement of cooperation between the Jovian and Pantopian nations within the Bharani sector.  It seems that despite recent hostilities and heightened rhetoric, both sides seek to chart a new path to avert escalation.  "The Bharani region is of great importance to all nations" said Vontner.  "We are fortunate to have been able to convince our respective governments to pursue the path of cooperation through commerce to mutual benefit, versus the descent into madness and war," adding "the absence of other nations from this pact necessitates that our militaries remain involved in the sector, since no single state may impose their control over the access to this common resource."

Neither the Jovian military nor the Foreign Affairs committee were available for comment.  Some analysts agree that this bold maneuver may be exactly what is needed to revive mining activity and stave off costly war.

Mr. Vontner also added "we welcome all other nations to join this pact to work toward mutual benefit, and ask that none be left from the table."  "But," he continued, "it should be known that defense leaders from both sides have indicated that further attempts at disruption of operations will be met with swift retaliation".

Confirmed military action in the Bharani Sector

Io Defense Command-  Overnight reports of military action in the hotly disputed Bharani Sector have been confirmed by senior Jovian military officials.

In what is being dubbed the "Battle of Bharani", an assaulting Yourcurian battle group was repelled by an unlikely coalition of Jovian, ISDA, and Consolidated forces.   It is also reported that the Yourcurian fleet was assisted by Pantopian "advisors" and technology.  The assaulting force inflicted significant losses, particularly to ISDA vessels, before being almost completely destroyed.  Jovian forces brought down the largest Yourcurian vessels, leading to the surrender of their remaining ships.  "We were impressed with the willingness of the ISDA and Consolidated forces to join with us to defend our common interests" said Admiral Vargosson of the Jovian Expeditionary Fleet, over a holotrans from the Bharani Sector.  He added, "this was our first encounter with the formidable forces of the Yourcurian fleet, although quick thinking and cooperation allowed us to secure their surrender."  On the losses incurred, he expressed "sincere appreciation for, and condolences to the families of, the personnel lost in battle, particularly aboard the ISDA vessel Prosperity."

When contacted about the Pantopian involvement, Jovian Mining Corp. Chief Hurstag Vontner stated "we hope that this recent conflict does not unravel the fragile peace we have worked so hard for, particularly regarding the cooperative mining agreement recently reached with the Pantopian Empire".
