Tell me about your faction

Hey guys - wanna do me a favor?  I'm starting a pen-and-paper RPG campaign with a couple buddies and I was thinking of using the universe we were talking about for our own campaign as the setting.  As such, I'd really appreciate your input on your vision for your faction - what sort of government does it have, society, architecture, outlook on life and other people, stuff like that.  The more detail, the better obviously, but anything you can give me will be great; "Pantops is basically the turn-of-the-century British Empire if it had been founded by space-faring Ethopians with a chip on their shoulder" would be my guys in one sentence, for example.

(Also, if you guys want in, that's a distinct possibility once I feel a little more comfortable with my core group.  The feel is going to be very much inspired by Firefly - something like an unlicensed asteroid mining ship trying to work their way around the fringes of society, always on the hunt for the rarest, most valuable rocks.)

Hmm, we'll try and get most of character creation done within the next week or two, so I guess I'd like to have the universe fleshed out in about the same time frame.
