Hey dudes, we've talked about how we needed to clear up firing arcs and such, but since we're all playing pretty fair with one another and playing on a large scale, it hasn't mattered but so much.  I think I have a pretty simple ship-creation change that could at least help a good deal.

So, in general, our ships have looked fairly naval - long and slim.  Using naval terminology makes sense enough, but we could also just say "front, back, left, and right" instead of "bow/fore, stern/aft, port, and starboard."  In general, our front and back have been a narrow dimension of our ships, so we could say "this medium laser fires forward" and assume that means it shoots the direction the ship is facing.  We could have a destroyer which fires broadsides to the left and right, or perhaps just to the left, provided it was maneuverable enough to keep flying circles around its target.  We could have minelayers which drop mines out the back as they run away, or bombers which shoot missiles forward, but have a tailgunner to shoot down interceptors.

How does that sound to folks?  Generally speaking, forward and rear weapons firing in the direction of travel/opposite that, and port & starboard weapons which fire more from specific points on the ship?  We can still play somewhat fast and loose with a system that simple, and allow margin of error on ranging, but I think it allows us to make firing arc something you could measure and argue one way or the other, at least.

I have no problems with those designations.  I am not sure I referred to any of the directions in nautical terms enough that i would miss it.
