Or are we holding of till August? Just try to schedule thing a bit so I can actually be there for a change.

It'd be hard for me to do July, but since I'm not really planning on BrickFair (and RichLUG generally seems not to be,) we could do a post-BF date perhaps?  What would work for folks?

I will be at Brickfair and would definitely be unavailable until then. Just way too much going on with work and family.

I would probably be able to set something up for September.

Sad to hear that you guys aren't going to make it up here, not even sure I will bring the fleet to the show then.

A date in September would be best for me.  I should be settled in to my new job by then.

August would be better for me, although I'll do my best to make it regardless of when it's set (excepting October).  After all, I have the cup to defend... ;-)

Kurt had some time in August - let's at least get a 3-man skirmish together, if possible.  Steve, how's the 10th, 11th, 17th, or 18th for you?  I'm moving the end of this month, and could potentially host, but there's 2 other guys in the house now, so it'd probably be better to do it elsewhere.

Looks like the 17th-18th is the better window.  I can host a small gathering; table space being the limiting factor.  I'll look around for other venue options...

Glad to hear it Rich.

So if 4 or more people come, I'm thinking that we should break it up tourney style.  I have two tables on the first floor that can accommodate 2, maybe three players each.

I have a couple smaller tables we could set up x units apart in an array so that ships could ftl jump between them.  This would allow us to try out some campaign tactics on a small scale (?).  This could give an extra dimension of play besides just head-to-head slugfests.  There could be some kind of goal in the center table, with one jump point on either of the end tables that the teams on that table would have to battle for control of.  The gaps could be just enough units wide that Ftl ships could jump on their own (in the narrow gap windows), but non-ftl ships would have to use the gates.

Your thoughts?

Awesome Josh. We'll have 2 table areas so we could do nano on one and micro on the other. I think behemoths should definitely sit this one out, unless for a nano scale game.

Jaron & Josh; if you are coming down 95, the easiest way to get here is to take 195 south to Powhite pkwy (76), then Chippenham pkwy south (150) to Midlothin tnpk west. There is a $0.70 toll on Powhite, but it's the easiest route.

Hey guys,

Attached is a rough sketch of what I'm thinking for the tourney style "maze".  The red zones are areas that FTL-capable ships can jump between; the green ovals are jump gates for non-FTL capable ships.  I'm thinking that the red zones should be 18 units apart, meaning your ship must have at least 18U of FTL capability to successfully jump from one red zone to it's neighbor.  I'm thinking that for jump gates, ships must be within 1U of the gate to enter and emerge 1U beyond the neighbor gate.  Any other ideas for mechanism?

Also thinking that players should start at the end tables, fighting for access to the central table which can contain some sort of prize or objective.  Any thoughts on this as well?

I'll have one other table in the kitchen area that can support a nano-scale game or small-class skirmishes.

Really looking forward to Saturday!

Steve

I like this idea of jumping between tables a lot.  I think it will add another dimension to the game and offer new strategies.  Do we need mining ships for this game or just military ships.

You can bring miners too.  I haven't really thought too much on what the inner table "objective" might be.  Possibly asteroids, or a ship that contains valuable passengers/cargo.

I'm open to suggestions.

I say bring what you want.  We should have enough table space for everything but largest class ships (Josh's behemoth might be tight), and can operate several battles at once. We can set limits tomorrow if we want.

Thanks to James, Kurt & Rich for coming over on Saturday.  We had a good time and worked through some gameplay issues, as well as adding a new weapon to the roster.  We managed to get through the initial round of the "tournament", with James victorious over Kurt and Rich conceding victory to me ( our battle was substantially longer than J & K's, with both sides taking heavy losses).  James & I still need to get together to fight the second round for the Victor's Cup.  We never did get to try the jump gates; perhaps at the next larger battle.

Jaron & Josh; sorry you guys couldn't make it down this time.  Maybe next time we could meet at Josh's church?  The layout & table space there would be perfect for the scenarios we talked about on Saturday.

I've already built one new ship and have some in-progress ideas for one or two more.  Looking forward to next time!

What exactly is the point of the grapple in the ammunition section?  There is no descriptor for this system and I believe that no one has used it before.

Brilliant!

What are the specs though?

James Eggleston

unread,

to lego-mi...@googlegroups.com
That's kinda the problem.  What I was thinking was it's a missile which hits a target and keeps you tied together at that distance, with some dice roll to pull your target in closer perhaps on later turns.  As each grappled ship tries to move, they're effectively trying to move both ships, so their effective engine power would be reduced.  For example, if a class 3 ship got hit with a grapple from a class 6, both ships would get 1 unit of movement out of each 3 power in engines, as though it was a combined class 9.  Thrusters are normal, FTL is impossible (since you can't exactly calculate the mass of the other ship, let's say.)  I don't have any good ideas for how to break out of the grapple (other than a high margin of success, supposing we were to do opposed rolls once grappled).  How's that sound to you guys?

Also, appropos of nothing, but if we're adding the flak cannon, is it worth keeping the defense lasers?  They're essentially just a weaker PD weapon at this point, but their extra range could make them preferable in some cases.

Steve V

That makes sense.  The glossary definition is kinda confusing and cuts off mid-sentence.  Opposed rolls would be the most straight-forward way to break a grapple, unless there's some kind of defense that could cut a grapple?

Speaking of glossary entries, docking needs to be updated as well.  Rich & I role-played a boarding scenario after you left, which was very helpful in clarifying that process, but I've noticed that there are no guidelines on conditions for docking with an enemy ship in the rules.  I'm assuming that shields must be down, speed matched (otherwise it's a collisions), etc... I'm also assuming that the docking rack does not play into this action, since it's used to dock smaller, friendly, ships to your own?  Not trying to be nitpicky, just trying to help clear up gaps in the rules.

I think you should keep defense lasers.  They have range, plus can fire twice per turn.  Flak cannons were single-fire-per-turn, correct?

Thanks again for hosting the game Steve.  Sorry I didn't post earlier.  I have been busy working on some things.  I agree with Steve that we should keep the defense lasers.  They have range which can help and they serve a unique job.  They can only be used for defense as well.  I think we should limit these weapons to only be used on class 5 ships and up.  Maybe do the same with flak cannons.  We might want to limit those weapons so they can only target missiles, pods, mines , and class 1 ships.

I think boarding and docking have been unused and forgotten to some extent, and I think that i why the rules are somewhat incomplete.  I think we could definitely flesh those out in the future and begin using them more.
