I am currently a high school student and an older sibling to my only sister. At a very young age, I discovered that I admire people who give back to the community. I love coming up with new and innovative ideas. I once suggested to my school that we should have a career-building class, but it did not get much support. I am happy to say that I failed a lot of times when I was young, which made me into the person I am today. My ambition and my purpose are to improve myself and the people around me.

During my YES year, I had the opportunity to volunteer in my host community. I saw unity and togetherness around other volunteers. I also joined a speech and debate clubm which helped me build my confidence. I would say that the most important thing that I learned during my YES year is that we are better and stronger together. That is why I came up with the One Love Project.

So far, our project has helped more than 300 children. It has also inspired a lot of youth to abstain from drugs and bad behaviors by providing them with the opportunity to volunteer, which gives them hope, motivation, and self-confidence that they can also give back to the community.

Most recently, our volunteer team spent New Year's with the children at the Lea Mwana Children's Home, spreading holiday cheer. We also donated cooking flour, soap, masks, and clothes. Check out our video:

I hope at some point in the near future to see the One Love Project expanding and conducting workshops to teach youth skills such as farming. To make sure that the orphanages are growing and benefiting from this project, we will conduct surveys with the staff and youth.

As an amateur musician who still has a job, I don't have much to complain about. As has been discussed on this site, classical musicians are one of the groups hardest hit by the pandemic. This article was written back in March, but 3 months later, not much has changed: Classical Musicians Say Coronavirus Cancellations are Financially Catastrophic. With live concerts still being cancelled for safety reasons, musicians have lost most of their paying gigs. Teaching is still happening, and a bright spot is the rising of online music ensembles.

The L O V E Project 2020 stands for "Liquid Open Viral Ensemble." It is the world's largest online symphony orchestra. I found out about it on Facebook about a month ago. Their goal is to have 1000 musicians playing Mozart's Magic Flute Overture. As their website says,

[O]nce there was a quarantined violist from COVID-19! . . . The violist begins to wonder how music could go on in these conditions; and in these conditions he thinks of an idea to let the music start again while the whole world is waiting.

I especially love that it started with a quarantined violist. We violists do tend to think outside the box! It sounds a little like a viola joke gone right for a change. My own community orchestra has also been doing some of these types of videos, (as I blogged about in April) so I already knew how to make a video of myself playing the viola part while watching the conductor and listening to a track on earbuds.

It's really hard to get such a video perfect, though, especially for a piece that is over 7 minutes long. After practicing several days, I did 4 or 5 takes, and they all ended up with different mistakes. I finally submitted one with 2 mistakes. The mistakes are in places where the viola part is in the background, either scrubbing away with repeated 16th notes to add some drive, or drowned out by the winds. It'll add authenticity--live performances are rarely perfect anyway. And with 999 other musicians (139 other violists), I'm sure I'm not the only one.

When I submitted my music video I was also asked to make this invitation video. It felt a little cringey to record it at first, but I found I really enjoyed watching everyone else's, which you can find on this YouTube Channel, so it was worth getting over that self-conscious feeling.

They have started putting the videos they have together, but they haven't received all 1000 yet. The deadline is July 6th. There are already musicians from around the world, and many different countries, including Italy, the UK, Germany, Belgium, Monaco, Serbia, Russia, Ukraine, China, Malaysia, Japan, Brazil, Venezuela, Canada, and all over the USA including here in Silicon Valley. They still need string players, especially violin IIs. So there is still time to send in your video!

The rules of the project are fairly straightforward. Beginning back in December of 2007 and ending in 2032, I have dedicated myself to reaching out to two thought leaders each quarter during the duration of the project (resulting in 200 interviews in total when complete).

I have also committed to experiencing something new each quarter by way of an interesting life event, activity, and/or travel, ensuring that by the end of 2032 I will have had 100 unique memories/moments to relish when the project concludes.

One of my students created a Monopoly-type board game based on the nervous system. Each of the different properties represented a different aspect. The Community Chest & Chance cards also contained many facts about the system, in addition to the usual penalties or rewards.

Another student researched and created a model of the knee. She has knee problems, and as an athlete, she experiences the real pain of these problems quite frequently. During her presentation, she showed the parts of the knee affected, informed the class how these problems affect her, and described possible treatments and surgical options. It took her hours to create the knee from Plasticine. This is the second reason I love PBL; it often becomes personal, allowing students to understand more about themselves or others they are close to.

This particular student chose this topic because her family has been deeply and painfully affected by depression. She wanted to understand it better and her project research and inquiry was meaningful to her far beyond the basic knowledge she acquired.

Many colleagues crowdfunded, have bought and read my book Death, a love project, a guide to exploring the life in death and finding the way together. It's been out three months now. In writing it I hoped it would help people at a difficult time when relationships are sensitive.

I've had great feedback from readers saying that it has helped. I'm very excited that many people have bought multiple copies for their children and siblings. If you'd like to use the book as a conversation starter you can order it here.

I'll be at Queensland Palliative Care's Good Life Good Death expo with the book on Sunday 1st December, and speaking on a panel 'Circle of Care: how to mobilise your support system' 11.30-12.15pm. Hope to see you there!

The Vintage Minolta Love Project is my plan to shoot every major Minolta SLR along with selected period-appropriate lenses and accessories from the Minolta SR-2 released in 1958 to the Maxxum 5D, introduced in 2004.

Think of this project as both an homage to a great company and a chance for me to fulfill my dream of shooting the best Minolta SLRs. My first real camera was a Minolta SR-T 101. I bought it and a third-party 50mm lens from a pawn shop while in college. I used to look at photography magazines and imagine what it would be like to own a Rokkor-X lens. Well, with the Vintage Minolta Love Project (VMLP), the time for wishing is past.

At one time, I did not like shooting with rangefinders and saw no need for a P&S. But times have changed, and so a few rangefinders, folding cameras, and P&S models with join SLRs (and DSLRs). An Autocord has also joined the group.

After being hit with a big wave of literal deaths of close family members, dating 2 men who suffered from narcissistic personality disorder, and fielding multiple microaggressions and macroaggressions in love, life, and career as an African American woman, I almost lost my life. My anxiety and depression had become chronic and my interior life was an unmanageable, scary place.

Peabody Johanson and her team, the Pacific Northwest Spaniel Squad, lounged under a canopy surrounded by more dogs than I could count. Everyone wore pink tutus, as they always do, and the love they all felt for not only their rescue dogs but for Old Dog Haven dogs took up more space in their tent than they did. Between what Peabody raised individually and what her team raised, ODH dogs scored over $18,000. Talk about love!
