This thread is about Benzedrex, an OTC inhaler containing a
surprisingly psychoactive stimulant drug called propylhexedrine.
Below is some good reading on Benzedrex, including some good harm
reduction advice:

A nasal decongestant dose is 0.5mg per inhalation, and each inhaler
contains 250mg.
From what I have read on the internet, 250mg propyl = 30-40mg adderall
(immediate release).
Though, the chemical structure is different, so it's hard to make a
scientific apples-to-apples comparison.
As far as psychoactive doses, the threshold is around 50mg (100
inhalations). If you just need to stay awake, and caffeine alone or
ephedrine aren't cutting it or you don't have access to them, you
could always take 100 puffs at a good ol' Benzedrex...but don't expect
euphoria at this dose.
The most common dosage is one full inhaler (250mg). (I do not condone
breaking the law regarding using OTC medications in an off-label
manner, I'm just relaying what others have told me.) This dosage
gives one the typical amphetamine feelings, and definitely
euphoria. :)
Most people crack open the inhaler (it takes a hard crack right at
where the two pieces of plastic in the front piece meet - don't be
afraid to hit it hard) and simply eat the cotton. This is not
recommended, for two reasons. First, the cotton is HORRIBLE on your
GI tract, and your body just isn't equipped to handle eating a piece
of cotton. You won't need to do it (see below). Second, if the
cotton is swallowed, the active ingredient takes longer to absorb, so
you get less of a "rush".
The alternative to this is to soak the cotton in a cup of lemon juice
(or anything that's really acidic) for at least an hour, but
preferably overnight. The propylhexedrine will dissolve into the
liquid, and you can simply discard the cotton and drink up. It
doesn't taste that horrible - the only other taste besides lemon is
menthol and lavender oil that the manufacturer of the inhaler puts in
there. Some users report burping or sweating lavender smells after
they drink it.
The propylhexedrine will absorb as quickly as any other pill/liquid
that you ingest, if not quicker - in about 25-35 minutes, on an empty
stomach. I'm actually 2 1/2 hours into it as I'm typing this (haha),
so I can't attest to the length of the high. I'll update this thread
later. :)
I'll add a few FAQs below, and I'll add more as I think of them.
Q. Where can I buy these?
A. CVS and Walgreens are known to have them. CVS keeps them behind
the counter. I don't even think they are age-restricted, but maybe
I'm wrong. I've been told Walgreens keeps them on the shelves. It
costs $5-$6.
As for your lemon juice, go to any grocery store, and look for the
little plastic lemon with a green(?) lid - it costs no more than $1.
That stuff is really concentrated, so that's what you want.
Q. Is this completely legal?
A. Buying Benzedrex over the counter and using it, as directed, for
your nasal congestion, is. Doing any of the above may not be, due to
the laws in your jurisdiction regarding the use of medicines contrary
to their label. I'm not condoning illegal activities here. Please
check the laws where you live before doing this.
Q. Who shouldn't do this / under what circumstances should I not do
this?
A. This is probably not a complete list, and I'm not a doctor, but if
you have / have taken any of the below, you shouldn't be taking
propylhexedrine:
* MAOI anti-depressant drugs
* Any other stimulant, including larger doses of caffeine, and
especially MDMA. (that's just overkill, people - don't go risking a
heart attack!)
* High blood pressure (If you're taking a beta blocker to deal with
this, then you might be alright. I've read reports of people without
any HBP diagnosis getting ahold of beta blockers to take with
stimulants, and they were able to maintain a normal blood pressure
level. But if high blood pressure is a concern for you, please please
see a doctor.) Propylhexedrine is a vasoconstrictor - so, really,
don't ignore that risk.
* If you're younger than 18, or are very underweight (hate to make
generalizations here about younger people - but as you should know,
body weight is critical to knowing how a drug will affect you. lower
body weight = higher effect / overdose risk.)
* If you are deficient in the enzyme in the liver that breaks down
propylhexedrine (CYP2D6), that will really screw with the amount of
the drug active in your bloodstream. Below is some interesting
reading on the subject - that same enzyme breaks down a whole bunch of
other recreational drugs, too, so it's worth reading about.
