Hi all,

We have been getting some queries from students about the talks tomorrow--this email is meant to clarify them.

A lot of you are asking us whether the talks tomorrow are related to Harsh Mander's group, Aman Biradari, and whether these projects were recommended by him for legal internships.  The short answer is YES, most definitely!

The long answer is this:  Aman Biradari runs a program for youth called Aman Yuva.  You can check it out here:  http://www.amanbiradari.org/amanyuva.html

Aman Yuva has FOUR projects where volunteers can join. Our speakers for tomorrow, Warisha and Tarique, lead TWO of these projects.  We are hoping to get a speaker who leads the third project next week.  Please note that even though Warisha and Tarique are closely associated with Aman Biradari projects, their formal affiliations are with different institutions-- Centre for Equity Studies, and the Tata Institute for Social Sciences, respectively.  Hence, the confusion.
Warisha Farashat is associated with Nyayagrah, which is described on the website thus:

Nyayagrah: A campaign for legal justice and reconciliation for the survivors of communal riots and violence:
In Gujarat, Delhi, Nellie, Hashimpura, and Bhagalpur

  • Stay with survivors, assessing the challenges that remain for them to rebuild their lives and social relations

  • Establish and/or support local units for legal justice and reconciliation

  • Internships for legal justice, research, documentation and peace building work

  • Long-term work with the local units for legal justice or reconciliation

Tarique's project with beggars and destitutes is described on the website like this:

Legal Justice for Destitute People and Urban Homeless Children
In Delhi

  • Regular voluntary legal support to destitute people in beggars courts

  • Regular voluntary legal support to homeless children in juvenile justice courts

  • Internships to law graduates for destitute people in beggars courts and homeless children in juvenile justice courts

Hope this clarifies your questions. Hoping to see you all at the talks tomorrow, which promise to be very interesting.  DO NOTE THE ROOM CHANGE:  the talks are in Room 15 at 1:30 pm and not the Seminar Hall.

TARIQUE MOHD. on
BEGGARY AND DESTITUTION
Social and Legal Perspectives

young beggar in delhi

Our legal and administrative structures dealing with beggary effectively punish a poor person for poor.  The focus of the police has been completely on the arrest of ‘so called’ beggars, while systems in place for training and rehabilitation have either disappeared or become non-functional.

Tarique Mohammed will discuss the Bombay Prevention of Beggary Act, 1959 and its impact on urban migrants.

Tarique is with Koshish, a field action project of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, and is currently working on issues of homelessness and destitution in Delhi.
TUESDAY, March 15th, 1:30
Room No. 15
Campus Law Center
The event is free and open to all.
Internship opportunities will be offered to law students
