What we are doing: (Sunday Morning Follow up for the Family)
Dear parents....This week we continued our series on how God has shaped each of us to serve him and other people. Our lesson focused on the third letter of the SHAPE acronym-our abilities. We focused on some often overlooked verses in the Old Testament that talked about God's plan for workers, carpenters, builders, musicians, secretaries, officials, and gatekeepers. In other words, these were people who used their abilities and skills to honor God. (II Chronicles 34:10-13). It's sometimes tough to differentiate between our abilities and our spiritual gifts. We focused on "natural" talents, skills, and abilities-categories might include athletic, musical, artistic, intellectual, organizational, social, and mechanical abilities. These skills certainly intersect with our spiritual gifts and the other topics from this SHAPE series. That's a key concept: God created us intentionally and desires that we grow in all of these areas, because all of these areas are tied together. This week, I'd encourage you to talk with your teen about the lesson. Here are some questions you could include in your conversation:
- Why do some people battle pride issues-they see themselves as overly skilled and talented and can become arrogant-while other people battle self-esteem issues-they see themselves as lacking any meaningful skills or abilities?
- What are some skills and abilities Christians might have that you've never seen used in a church? How might those skills and abilities help a local congregation?
- What are some of your skills or abilities that you never thought might be valuable for our church, but could be?
I pray you and your family are having a blessed week. Thanks for your continued support for our High School Ministry! ...Jason
