The Ty Moore campaign -- the Socialist Alternative candidate running in Minneapolis -- is doing everything right. Having spoken to folks closer to the campaign, I would say his chances of winning are better than Sawant's out in Seattle, who is relying more on media buzz than ground-game. The Moore campaign is also ward-based, meaning they can more easily concentrate their forces (a classic guerrilla tactic).

Moore's campaign has a fantastic ground game. They've run near-constant door-to-door canvassing runs (including an all-Spanish speaking canvass). Face-to-face contact with voters is the most important act a campaign can engage in.

They have also mastered the art of grassroots fundraising: a must. The campaign has raised funds from over 400 individual contributors. According to the local Minneapolis Star-Tribune, "In south Minneapolis’ Ninth Ward, Socialist candidate Ty Moore trumped DFL-endorsed contender Alondra Cano in fundraising. He has taken in $46,074, while she raised $29,470. Moore, who wants to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, attracted donations from as far away as New York and Washington state."

Fundraising is something Philly Socialists needs to become more sophisticated at. If we're ever going to be able to shift phases toward larger activity such as Socialist Alternative is spearheading in Minneapolis, we need to build up our operational capacity. To that purpose I'll be drawing up and taking the lead on implementing a fundraising plan for 2014, which I'll be presenting a rough draft of at the November General Assembly.
