This month we'll pick up where we left off in January talking about
Javascript games. There a couple new frameworks, the mozilla games
competition entrants were posted and we barely got started talking
about implementation.
One thought that came out of last month's discussion was that the
opportunity for js. games (vs. flash, console etc.) is the level of
integration and mashup-ability that the browser offers as a game
platform. If javascript games are just a slower version of their
cousins, all we've really gained is a plugin-free boast and little
else. However, if we can seamlessly integrate web content into our
games somehow, take advantage of the DOM, CSS, local storage and
everything else the browser environment offers - in a playful and
value-ful way, then we might get something that is greater than the
sum of its parts.
If that's a rather vague and hand-wavy notion, then you'll know why
I'm still at my day job and writing this rather than coding up my next
fortune right now :)
Please come along Wednesday, to help flesh this out, play and critique
some existing games and put some thought into where Javascript games
might go - and what we'll need to do to get there.
