Hi folks,

Helen Wells has got in touch with me to ask if anyone can create an installation for the lights in the trees in Park Square, and possibly other locations, so that when someone hugs the tree, the lights come on. I think it would be fairly simple but it's not something I can deliver.

I imagine you can create an area to be hugged that has capacitance, pressure or some other kind of sensor and some very simple on/off logic. If anyone takes it on I would really love to be involved just to see how's it done!

Anyway if you're interested please email

Hi there,

I haven't been a hackspace member for a good while so rarely have a peek at these forums so sorry this reply is probably a little late in the game to be of use...

I think the cheapest/simplest solution would be to use a collection of piezo sensors on each tree and trigger the lights when an impact is sensed. You'd probably want to attach something larger to the sensors to maximise the area of sensitivity. I can imagine a rig made of fabric-covered chickenwire dotted with piezos glued to little bits of foam that would be both sturdy and effective.

Would love to hear what the solution ended up being if you went down a different path, though!
