Hi,

came across your site browsing on the web. I don't have any great background in any of the STEM modules and have spent the bulk of my life doing pretty boring jobs in offices warehouses etc. Basically I am a complete beginner in everything (: IOs it necessary to have had some practical experience prior to joining?

Absolutely not. There are people around that will be happy to show you
how things work (and indeed for complex or dangerous things inductions
are required).
