I believe that the shoot yourself in the foot metaphor has its origins
in comments made by Bjarne Stroustrup (creator of C++) and others, in
the early days of the C++ language.

It was suggested that the problem with C is that it is very easy to
shoot yourself in the foot. With C++, it is harder to shoot yourself
in the foot, but if you succeed, you end up blowing your whole leg
off :)
