I've uploaded some of the materials that we've used in our
introductory programming module. There should be enough here to get
you started. If you have any questions, post them to the group.

- or copy & paste it into your browser's address bar if that doesn't
work.

...thanks Nick.
Apologies for not meeting you at parents evening - my cold and ear
ache became too much to bear by lunch, so i had to go home.
Jonathan.

I've added another lecture, this one an introduction to game
programming using Pygame. It covers things at a lower level than
would be desirable for your audience, so you will probably want to
employ some kind of scaffolding if you use this material. (I've
provided some basic scaffolding of my own in the pgtools package.)

Hi all,

We have not heard much regarding the material. Thought I would see how
things are going before our meeting next Thursday so we can sort out
an agenda.

Roger may also be joining us to discuss the programming competition
and creating of Computing hubs for schools which is picking up
momentum.
I will keep you informed.

Hi Royce,
Rob can't make the meeting so wants me to chair it - but maybe you should?

**feels guilty**

Well I did take a laptop to France with me with all the stuff on but
the way things worked out I spent all my time chopping wood for the
fire in order to keep the wife warm so I never did get to work through
them. I am on a training course this weekend as well so my windows of
opportunity are rapidly disappearing. I will try to do it before the
next meeting but.......

Deg.

Thanks for the meeting this afternoon.
After looking at the material supplied by Nick (by the way, some
wouldn't run), i wrote the following thoughts down;
kids like fun stuff such as games and also, i think, some, more
technically minded, would love the more powerful programs such as the
http web server.
anyway, some of the stuff i thought was decent includes;
lottery number generators; 'my house'; Charcount activities; animal
and number guessing games.
Looking at the summary material written for sixth formers, my
suggestion for knowledge/topics to cover would be;
calculator and maths functions
print
defining variables/assignments (obviously data types)
moving and animating sprites
conditionals and loops
modules and functions

i haven't yet actually written code but will do soon
will post further thoughts when i've had more of a play
cheers
jonathan

[A few folk know this] 3 offers/updates from the University
------------------------------------

1. June 25th/26th will see a 24h (noon-noon) conference of ICT
teachers in Birmingham – attendance is invited and strongly encouraged.
It is probable that registration and accommodation etc. will all be
covered by sponsors.
Contact for this is Simon Humphreys, (Hills Road College, Cambridge)
SHump...@hillsroad.ac.uk.
Web page forthcoming.

2. The University will be submitting a bid to EPSRC to build
interactive tools aimed at KS3 (and KS4) describing current work in
video surveillance (exciting stuff!).

The bid will be greatly strengthened by explicitly citing partners in
schools. The commitment would be to comment on any prototype and
undertake to experiment with the software on suitably chosen groups.

If you’d like to be on board, please contact
ro...@comp.leeds.ac.uk

3. On April 16th there will be a high profile event for female
computing students in the university: schools are invited to send
upper-year females (teachers too are welcome). There is no cost. Full
details at
http://www.comp.leeds.ac.uk/bcswomen/
and please contact
han...@comp.leeds.ac.uk
for registration.
