Hi all you LEED GAs, LEED APs and LEED GA and AP Wannabees,

We met again for the LEED Study Group on Wednesday, April 14th at 5:30
PM at Stephanos, located at 4632 South Maryland, in the shopping
center across from the UNLV Student Union Building.

I began by a brief discussion of the recent energy upgrades at our
home in Las Vegas. I believe that we each should set an example of
living what we are teaching when it comes to living lighter on the
planet.

We recently added a radiant barrier in our attic on the bottom of the
top chord of our roof trusses and added more blown in cellulous
insulation, so that we now have 18 inches above our ceiling in the
attic (R-57). We have also ordered the installation of Photo Voltaic
(PV) panels for our home which should be able to generate 100% of our
annual electrical power needs. The good news is that the Nevada Power
Utility Company Rebate combined with the Federal Tax credit will
offset approximately half of the cost of our PV system installation.
The conservative estimate is that the PV panel installation should pay
for itself in less than 8 years. The PV panel system has a warranty
lifespan of 25 years. The system size will be 4.73 KW DC or 4.090 KW
AC. It will be net metered so that we can receive the $2.30 per watt
rebate from NV Energy; so the electrical grid is the storage system.
Good bye escalating electrical power bills.

Please note that this study group is free of cost other than purchase
of your own study materials. We have begun with studies necessary to
become a LEED Green Associate. The plan is to then continue with
studies necessary to become a LEED Accredited Professional on LEED for
Homes. Please note that several hours of self study (such as
participation in this study group) can count toward your Credential
Maintenance requirements if you are already a Legacy LEED AP. If you
know anyone that is interested in participating in a LEED Study Group,
please forward this e-mail to them accordingly. We will be meeting
again on Wednesday of next week at the same time and location.

At this study group meeting, we then discussed Chapters 7, 8 & 9 of
the LEED Green Associate Study Guide by the Green Building Education
Services per Item Number 1) noted below.

The assignment for the next meeting will be to read the remaining
Chapters of the LEED Green Associate Study Guide by the Green Building
Education Services [Item Number 1) below] for continued discussion at
the meeting.
