Q: Where do I download the latest software version?
Tecplot 360 can be downloaded through our customer portal, My Tecplot link in the top menu. You will be prompted to log in to access the software downloads. If you do not already have an account, you can request one.

Q: How do I export an image when I have hundreds of zones?
If you have hundreds of zones it can be time consuming to switch to each zone and export an image. Macros can be used here to automatically activate each zone in succession and export an image.

Then edit the macro file using a text editor and encase the export and activate call in a LOOP and ENDLOOP. Check the Scripting Guide in our documentation for additional information about these commands.

Q: Can my older version of Tecplot 360 read .szplt format?
Newer Tecplot 360 versions are backwards compatible with earlier versions of Tecplot 360.
Versions of Tecplot 360 released before 2014 cannot read SZL (.szplt) file format. We recommend updating to the newest version.

Q: How do I set-up transient (time-varying) animation in Tecplot 360?
The Edit Time Strand tool can be used to set-up your data to be recognized as Transient. A Strand and SolutionTime will need to be assigned for each zone. Zones that are active at the same time step need to share SolutionTime, but have different Strand IDs.

Q: What platforms does the latest version of Tecplot 360 support?
Platforms supported by the latest version of Tecplot 360 are listed in Documentation & Platform Requirements. You can also find requirements in the Installation Guide or linked from the Tecplot 360 Welcome Screen.

SZL stands for subzone load-on-demand. It is our proprietary technology that increases memory efficiency by combining data management algorithms, advanced data requirement predictors, parallelization and additional code optimizations.

Q: I installed the trial version, do I need to uninstall it before installing my purchased version?
You do not need to uninstall the trial version. The installation of Tecplot software remains the same regardless of the license type.

Q: Can multiple versions of Tecplot software be run on the same computer?
Yes, multiple versions of Tecplot software can run on the same computer. Similarly, Tecplot 360, Tecplot Focus, Tecplot RS can be run on the same computer.

A single-user license key does not allow running on a virtual machine. If you need to use Tecplot software on a virtual machine with a single-user license, please email Technical Support to discuss your situation.

Q: How much will it cost to upgrade to the newest version if I renew my license?
For customers with a current TecPLUS service, there is no charge to upgrade from an earlier version of Tecplot software. If your TecPLUS has expired, you can request a renewal.

Q: Where can I buy Tecplot Software?
In the U.S. and Canada, please call our sales engineers at 1.800.763.7005 or email us at sa...@tecplot.com. You can also use the online request a quote form.

Q: How can I get a license key needed to run Tecplot software?
Single-user licenses for Tecplot software released in 2016 or later can be activated with an Activation Code. The Activation Code is provided to you when you purchase or renew your TecPLUS service for a single-user license. Once the Tecplot installation has finished, you will be asked to enter in the Activation Code on your first start-up.

Q: Do I need to install a license manager to run Tecplot software?
Current Tecplot network licenses require an installation of a Reprise License Manager (RLM). Single-user Tecplot licenses do not.

The software may be installed and used on personally-owned computers as well as Purdue owned computers for CoE faculty, staff and students.

The following instructions are for self-supported systems. If your system IS under ECN support then follow the link below and ask for the software to be installed on your system:

Download Tecplot from the PULS web site (under Visualization/TECPLOT)

Updating the license file

Windows (64-bit)
Once you've downloaded the executable from PULS double click on the file to start the installation. During the installation you will be asked for a License number. Use the following:

After the installation is finished launch the application. Once Tecplot comes up it will complain that it doesn't have a valid license. Select OK and the "Tecplot Licensing" window will open. The information requested on the License window depends on whether the machine is primarily located on campus or is a personally owned laptop or home system.

Macintosh OS X (64-bit)
Once you've downloaded the Tecplot DMG file from the PULS site double click on the file to install Tecplot. Just follow the directions. Once the new Tecplot folder in your Applications folder launch the application called "Tecplot 360 EX 2022 R2". Its going to complain that Apple doesn't know who the developer is (depending on your security settings). If you get this warning go to System Preferences->Security & Privacy->General. At the bottom of the window it should list the Tecplot error again. Select the "Open Anyway" button. If the button is greyed out then click on the lock in the bottom left corner and log in as an admin first.

If you successfully launched Tecplot it will complain that it doesn't have a valid license and the "Tecplot Licensing" window will open. The information
requested on the License window depends on whether the machine is primarily located on campus or is a personally owned laptop or home
system. **If your machine is going to be primarily located on campus use this information:

Select OK and you should now have a valid license to run Tecplot. **If your machine is a laptop or home system then you need to set up off campus licensing. Skip below to the "Off campus licensing" section and follow the instructions.

Linux
Once you have downloaded the "tecplot360ex2018r1_linux64.sh" file from the PULS site move it to a tmp directory on the Linux machine you are installing it on. Once there run the installation script and accept the license agreement. For example:

Put in the target location you want tecplot installed at if the default it not what you want. Hit return. The script will then install tecplot to the target directory. The licensing depends on where your machine is located. **If your machine is going to be primarily located on campus then edit the file /tecplotlm.lic. At the bottom of the file replace:

Close the file and you should have a valid license to run tecplot. **If your machine is a laptop or home system then you need to set up off campus licensing. Skip below to the "Off campus licensing" section and follow the instructions.

To be able to use Tecplot off campus you must use the "License Roaming" feature. This must be done ON CAMPUS or you must connect your remote machine to an on campus network via the Purdue VPN. See the following to learn how to do that:

A small number of Tecplot 360 licenses are available for the usage at LRZ Linux Clusters, RVS and SuperMUC-NG. The software has been licensed for academic use only. The LRZ is not providing any Tecplot licenses for the usage on local computer systems, i.e. at your institute/professorship or on any other mobile devices. Therefore, before using the software at the named LRZ systems, please contact the LRZ Service Desk if the academic status of your organisation is unclear. Prior to be able to use the software on the named LRZ systems your personal User-ID needs to be added to the Tecplot license server.

then your institut/professorship has licensed Tecplot separately and independently from LRZ. Please ask your local responsible staff member at your institute/professorship on how to use Tecplot in your local computer environment.

For automatization, pyTecplot can be used. Please, install pyTecplot with your preferred python module/environment individually via pip install --user pytecplot., as described on the tecplot documentation page.
In case of questions, problems, or just when you need help, please contact out Service Desk.

This is a matlab function to read ASCII format tecplot data. It supports both IJK ordered data and finite element data. Installation of Tecplot is not needed. License of Tecplot is also not needed.
Files included:
- tec2mat: core script
- tec2mat_example: example to run the script
I have other tools for fluid dynamics. You're welcome to check out at
This version of the code is licensed with BSD license.
