I added Graham Pound's brilliant HL1 experience to the bottom of the
HL1 page. For those of you that haven't read it, please do. You'll
enjoy it, I know I did-

Speaking of HL1's, does anyone have photos of them with the fabric off so we
can see the cone drivers?

Sorry John,

although I've got almost everything....pics of the HL1 showing the
cones are pretty rare, but some of our HL1 owners (pleased or not with
them) should be able to help out?

What I found on the Internet does not sound very nice, but seems to be
in line with what some of our members say.....

Without doubt the HL1 is the worst speaker I've ever owned, garbage
drive units looks so cool too! I'd seriously advise you to pass, I
bought a pair after David Prakel in Hi-Fi Answers passed favourable
comment on them, he could not have heard them.

They are very crudely put together and use some pretty nasty drivers.

Hi have been absent for a while. As i do not own any Lecson
electronics (big sigh!) i tend not to comment on most of the posts.
However i must say something about the HL1,s. I also have seen that
post which i believe is quite old and was in reply to a request for
info on the speakers. Why would anyone buy a relatively expensive pair
of horn loudspeakers without listening to them first?. Did he not
listen to them at the dealer? Sure the drive units are inexpensive
and the cabinet construction is not that pretty, but since it is all
hidden by cloth it hardly matters as it is quite solid. Mine are still
not finished but i could perhaps photo the drive units etc. as they
are not back in yet. I was quite happy with the sound of my first pair
back in the seventies. I would also point out that many HL1 owners
owned them for a long time, 25-30 years, and were not inclined to
change. They were also quite reliable as many are still in full
working order. The worst speaker he had ever heard. Maybe for him, but
for a lot of owners a very good speaker i would say. I believe a lot
of problems stem from room placement, they definitely need to be
corner or at least backs to the wall mounted to enhance the bass. I
remember one seller on Ebay commenting on 'house shaking bass'
quality. I intend to rebuild mine with new wiring and terminals and
have already changed some crossover components. The crossovers on mine
have been heavily modded with some very large caps inserted. Also the
pc tracks have been bypassed with solid copper wire. All this will
effect the sound of course but i hope for the better.
Regards Jim

I'd love to buy a pair if the shipping costs were not so extreme to judge
for myself!

Horn loaded speakers have significant dynamic advantages over any other
speaker technology and due to their inherent efficiency should mate up well
with the AP1 power amplifier.

If properly engineered, they could be spectacular.

One of these days...

Ha, very flattered to think people enjoyed my writing :)

I'm working on a part two, but haven't had much chance to do any
serious listening and now I have to wait for my next AC1 to turn up.
So... patience, young (and old) padawans ;)

As for shipping costs, it cost me £40 to have mine delivered from
London to Blackburn.

Try www.shiply.com and let courier companies fight over your
business! It's pretty neat.
