My daughter inherited this set from her grandpa (Including Tim's cable).
The set looks mint to me but s/n ratio is a bit poor though. Any advise for an address for service in Europe?
Tnx

Had my set serviced by the guy who knows all, contact via meridian, assuming he is still active

The signal to noise ratio will probably always be worse than other designs because of all the FETs used to switch the signals, especially at the front end. I think you've already been pointed towards the former Lecson engineer (Paul Holmes?) who is contacted via Meridian. Perhaps he could advise on replacing some of the FETs with modern devices.

When I repaired mine (which I bought off ebay in around 2019) I used J112 devices made by OnSemi. They were in the filter section though, so their noise wasn't amplified at all so I can't comment on if the noise level reduced.

Of course capacitors and other devices can go noisy with time, but I'm sure that an experienced person will be able to sort this for you.

These old circuit boards with old solder can be tricky to work on, so somebody with experience is essential.

It's good to see that Lecsons appeal to a new generation. I still remember seeing my first AC1 in a shop window in 1980 and immediately making the decision to buy it. That one was eventually exported to Singapore by the guy who bought it off me.

Cheers

The old question about service and repair...  Always difficult as qualified Hifi shops have almost disappeared in most countries. Years ago Paul (Holmes) used to repair Lecsons and he usually did a great job. But great jobs always take time, and even if just the basics are checked and/or repaired, expect a not too small  four digit price tag for his work. Apart from that I would not bet he is still repairing Lecsons, due to his age and a certainly well deserved retirement.

Thanks for the advice, gentlemen.

Discussing funding with my daughter we think a 4 digit bill is a little over the top. Mainly an AUX input will be used (connected a BT receiver). We'll take the noise on the pickup input for what it is.

Good idea! ;)) Had more than enough bills for Hifi stuff and know friends who paid more for checkups than the real thing. As I am silly enough to own almost everything Lecson....quite a few even twice....I would have to rob half a dozen banks to pay for service. So I leave it as long as everything is fine or at least good enough with a bit of tolerance. More "input", see my website. Link used to be on top of this site, for many years, must check where it has gone !

Hope everyone is well.  More than a few things going on personally.

Did manage to get the AC1 and AP3 recaped and transistored last year.  Sounds wonderful.

Hi John,

Long time no see.......  Tried several times to get a mail through to you, but never worked. Was either rejected by emmaco or got no reply....  What a pity !
Despite some action at your end (?) I do hope you are well !

Paul H fixed two pre and one amp and the cost was no where near 4 digits, that was around 2016. I get the impression that current audio repairs charge rates are between £60 and £80 per hour plus parts.
Anyone interested in Gale 401 chrome and 402??

As I tried to explain in a private mail: Times and prices have changed a LOT since 2016. Now plus enormous shipping costs and taxes if you do not live in the UK.
I have recorded prices for all that over the last 20 years, including my own repairs, and Paul is an absolute expert who deserves being paid for a great job. Again: A friend from the USA paid about $ 1500 for getting his tuner refurbished and repaired by guess who. A third of the cost was for shipping to the UK and back. And as polishing perspex can go terribly wrong, you will also pay through the nose, trying to replace it. And that was about 10  years ago for ONE item. So if anybody knows of secret repair wizzards in Europe, PLEASE let us know.
A BIT easier still in the USA, where you might be lucky to find a good man, just as John did.

Sadly the situation will only get worse because the specialist knowledge & experience will not be there for odd ball products like like Lecson.  I suppose it could give me a paying hobby when I eventually retire :-)

It's was 2014 , see attached billing for the repairs to the three lecson units.

Talking to an audio manufacturer certified repair centre, they tell me that over the 10 year time span the hourly charge rate increased by 28% to £57.50 plus VAT.

Like all repair costs, how long is a piece of string?

Well, you have your numbers and I have mine, based on dozens of repairs over 17 years at the forums and elsewhere. Everybody free to believe whatever he or she wants.

Quite, my repairs bills span 50 plus years, starting with a crummy Goodmans Module 80.
Over and out.

It sounds like electronics skills are becoming an absolute necessity for vintage hifi ownership. My AC1 wasn't too bad to repair but I've been trying to make headway with my blown-up AP2 for nearly 5 years. Enclosed is a photo of the first new circuit board that I had to put back in the box 2 years ago because I had too many DIY and other electronics projects to complete. I'm hoping to pick the AP2 back up around May or June.

There's a guy near Telford in England who does electronics repairs and posts videos on YouTube (Mend It Mark). A Lecson project would be a nice fit for him but his books are closed at the moment due to him being overloaded.
