The signal to noise ratio will probably always be worse than other designs because of all the FETs used to switch the signals, especially at the front end. I think you've already been pointed towards the former Lecson engineer (Paul Holmes?) who is contacted via Meridian. Perhaps he could advise on replacing some of the FETs with modern devices.
When I repaired mine (which I bought off ebay in around 2019) I used J112 devices made by OnSemi. They were in the filter section though, so their noise wasn't amplified at all so I can't comment on if the noise level reduced.
Of course capacitors and other devices can go noisy with time, but I'm sure that an experienced person will be able to sort this for you.
These old circuit boards with old solder can be tricky to work on, so somebody with experience is essential.
It's good to see that Lecsons appeal to a new generation. I still remember seeing my first AC1 in a shop window in 1980 and immediately making the decision to buy it. That one was eventually exported to Singapore by the guy who bought it off me.
Cheers

Thanks for the advice, gentlemen.
Discussing funding with my daughter we think a 4 digit bill is a little over the top. Mainly an AUX input will be used (connected a BT receiver). We'll take the noise on the pickup input for what it is.

Hope everyone is well. More than a few things going on personally.
Did manage to get the AC1 and AP3 recaped and transistored last year. Sounds wonderful.

Good idea! ;)) Had more than enough bills for Hifi stuff and know friends who paid more for checkups than the real thing. As I am silly enough to own almost everything Lecson....quite a few even twice....I would have to rob half a dozen banks to pay for service. So I leave it as long as everything is fine or at least good enough with a bit of tolerance. More "input", see my website. Link used to be on top of this site, for many years, must check where it has gone !

The old question about service and repair... Always difficult as qualified Hifi shops have almost disappeared in most countries. Years ago Paul (Holmes) used to repair Lecsons and he usually did a great job. But great jobs always take time, and even if just the basics are checked and/or repaired, expect a not too small four digit price tag for his work. Apart from that I would not bet he is still repairing Lecsons, due to his age and a certainly well deserved retirement.

My daughter inherited this set from her grandpa (Including Tim's cable).
The set looks mint to me but s/n ratio is a bit poor though. Any advise for an address for service in Europe?
Tnx

It sounds like electronics skills are becoming an absolute necessity for vintage hifi ownership. My AC1 wasn't too bad to repair but I've been trying to make headway with my blown-up AP2 for nearly 5 years. Enclosed is a photo of the first new circuit board that I had to put back in the box 2 years ago because I had too many DIY and other electronics projects to complete. I'm hoping to pick the AP2 back up around May or June.
There's a guy near Telford in England who does electronics repairs and posts videos on YouTube (Mend It Mark). A Lecson project would be a nice fit for him but his books are closed at the moment due to him being overloaded.
