Having never heard/seen/been aware that an AP4 incarnation existed ….. were they any good, and if so, why did the design not make it?

The seller told me he had decided to keep them... but maybe he got an offer he couldn't refuse.

One day I'll get a pair. One day...

Has anybody built a pair using the magazine design? I'm rebuilding my AP2 at the moment with new boards from JLC in China but a pair of AP4s might be a nice backburner project in a couple of years' time

Just out of curiosity, how many AP4’s were built? I assumed it was only a handful.

I'm guessing the AP4 was the right product at the wrong time. People probably didn't have the cash for such a niche item and the real audiophile bubble was only just growing. Looking at all that black finned aluminium it must have been expensive to manufacture so the retail price would  have been very high for the time. Lecson never appeared to be well financed so there must have been little scope to go all-out on a worldwide marketing spree, nor just to roll the dice and bulk buy components to bring unit costs down.

It appears to be a well respected amplifier among those who know, so I assume it's very good.

It's well worth a DIY build I reckon, just as a backburner project. On that basis second hand heatsinks and other case parts can be sourced via ebay over a few months when people do offer them. Low cost 'silent' PC fans could be used to boost cooling while reducing the heatsink costs - a small amount of forced air movement increases heat dissipation by an astonishing amount. I think I'd build in one of those ready-build speaker protection boards just in case, but with a proper relay instead of the usual no-name or Omron copy device.

At the time the prototypes were built the AP4 was one of a handful of “Super Amps” the others being the Crown DC300A and the Phase Linear PL700.

It was outstanding at the time better than the Crown & the Phase Linear; which amps I used as references. They were better suited for band PA systems where they had great success.  That said the Class A could be improved particularly in terms of construction and I had a list of changes built up within a couple of years.

It was the wrong time and Lecson had no money so I financed the build of the AP4s rather than Singhania but before the amp could get established Lecson had crashed.  As I recall in its short life the Class A did particularly well in Germany.

I loved the sound.  At the time it seemed to have just effortless reserves of power.

Just wondering, how did it compare sonically to the AP3 Mk2.
Was it a little better or was it a lot more than that?!
Listening to IMF TLS80 mkii right now and recently Gale GS401a alternating between the AP3 mk2 and, believe it or not, Leak TL50+ mono valve amps and either one is right at the top for me and I have heard most of the other super amps of the the day and today.
Thanks.
Nick
