Our thanks go out to our neighbors in Lakewood for their assistance in helping each other during this trying time. You are the best!
DUKE
In addition to working with Duke to solve the glitches in their online reporting system, we believe we need to meet with them to discuss the ongoing problem of trees. The bottom line is that our residents do not believe enough is being done before the storms to prevent line damage. We will be setting up a meeting at the Country Club with a Duke representative for early March (after the holidays and our regular January meeting but before the snowbirds leave). Tentative date is March 5th.
FALL PICNIC
Out of respect for the toll taken on many of us by the back-to-back hurricanes, we are downsizing and simplifying the November 9th picnic to a straightforward BBQ event – just food and gathering from 11-2 at Boyd Hill. Mark your calendar to come out, swap tales of your adventures, and relax in the shade with some great food. If you want to bring a dessert of some sort -- cookies, brownies – please do. If you have a business or product you want to promote, feel free to set up a table – that is always welcome. (This is Brady Johnson’s BBQ -- about which we have heard nothing but raves!)
DISPOSAL OF HOUSEHOLD WASTE
The city will be coming around to pick up storm-related debris but you can expect this to take a very long time. For the most part, we have bushes and branches; many homes in the city have their entire contents by the curb. And it should go without saying that household and/or storm debris does NOT get put on the golf course for disposal!!

SPECTRUM
We cannot count the number of complaints we received during Helene and Milton about Spectrum. One person reported being told that his lack of service was due to a power failure at the Spectrum site but the power company said that wasn’t the case. Others complained about not being able to get anyone to talk to. We gave up on Spectrum about 3 years ago -- ever-increasing prices and ever-decreasing service. Wow was cheaper and easier to deal with but their product was more unreliable – blank screen, pixilation, frozen picture. We cut the cable, went entirely to streaming service except for Wi-Fi and the land line, saving about $80/month and enduring a lot less aggravation.
If anyone has another idea or has done something else to get away from the cable-greed, please pass it on.
GOLF COURSE
There have been some concerns expressed about what appears to be excess water in some yards attributed to the work done on the golf course. The golf course has not been redesigned or changed in any way; the old grass was removed and new grass put in. Also, the golf course has no control over where the water goes in those ponds; it comes in one side of Lakewood and goes out the other. This was a record-breaking rainfall – Lake Maggiore overflowed as it has never overflowed before -- and the water is still trying to find a place to go. We are entering our dry season; it is expected that water levels will drop all over the tri-county area.

DEBRIS REMOVAL
If it would encourage you to see the pile of brush removed from your curb sooner rather than later, Kendra O’Connor is willing to load it, with your help, into her very large dump trailer and run it to the brush site on MLK. A modest, reasonable donation toward her gas and vehicle fluids, if possible, would be appreciated but is not required. The brush site will accept the load for free. Reach her at 727-865-6655.
FOOD TRUCKS
There will be a food truck or two in the driveway at Matthew Faulhaber’s house on Hallowe’en evening, approx. 5-8. 4321 Columbus.
FEDEX
After 2 years of being good guys, the Fedex delivery person, at least the one we got this past week, reverted to putting our package at the closed garage door. All our Fedex labels say LEAVE AT FRONT DOOR to avoid this attempt to save a few feet of walking. They apparently believe we keep horses in the garage -– the package was placed behind my right rear tire so had I backed out, I would have run right over it. We had a nice chat with the local station manager and he is optimistic that this bizarre practice will stop. Let us know if you have experienced this obvious exercise in laziness. (We also asked him to try to get his drivers to slow down but we know that, even if he scolds them, it isn’t going to happen.)
POLLING PLACE
Despite being advised and acknowledging that the legal notice about voting published in yesterday’s paper was incorrect, the Times published it again today. For those of us in 105 and 112, the correct place is Hammock Hall at Boyd Hill – that’s on the 31st Street side.

FALL PICNIC
Mark your calendar – it’s just a week away – November 9th at Boyd Hill. Brady Johnson’s BBQ, sides, drinks – all courtesy of the Association and open to all! Bring the kids, bring a blanket/chair, join your neighbors from 11-2. If you have a business or product to promote, set up a table. It’ll be nice to get together and swap tales of Milton! If you want to bring a dessert of any kind, please do.
DEBRIS REMOVAL – REPEAT ANNOUNCEMENT
If it would encourage you to see the pile of brush removed from your curb sooner rather than later, Kendra O’Connor is willing to load it, with your help, into her very large dump trailer and run it to a brush site. A modest, reasonable donation toward her gas and vehicle fluids, if possible, would be appreciated but is not required. The brush site will accept the load for free. Reach her at 727-865-6655.
If you are concerned about your grass being damaged by the debris, you might want to consider Kendra’s offer or find a private business because the deadline to complete the removal for the city to qualify for FEMA reimbursement is January!
We asked the city to reconsider its decision to close the local brush sites for dump trailers but it’s a simple matter of capacity. It’s all they can do to handle what’s being delivered to the sites, and the dump trailers produce quantities they cannot at this time manage. We’ll be notified when the ban is lifted.
VOTING
Apparently I misspoke when I said that precincts 105 and 112 cover all of Lakewood. We also have a bit of 101. Voting for that precinct is at Pinellas Community Church, 5591 31st St S. For 105 and 112, it is Hammock Hall at Boyd Hill on 31st St. Again, this is for in-person voting at the ballot box, not for early voting or for ballot drop. (Your precinct assignment is on your voter card or you can go to votepinellas.gov and enter your address.)

TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF UTILITY LATE FEES
In response to the widespread impact of hurricanes Helene and Milton, the city has announced a temporary emergency waiver of late fees and notice fees for utility accounts, as well as a temporary suspension of water meter lock-offs due to non-payment. Additionally, lien filings and business tax late fees have been suspended temporarily. The suspension of fees will remain in effect until Dec. 31, 2024, unless otherwise stated.

DEBRIS CLEAN-UP
If you have left household goods mixed in with your storm debris, you may get passed up by the truck. Also, anything in plastic bags. People are putting requests for household pick-ups on the seeclickfix system but the city is pretty much putting that on a back burner until the storm stuff is addressed. While we seem to have much of our stuff already cleared here in Lakewood, many parts of the city are still recovering.
SPECTRUM
We lost count of the number of complaints we got about Spectrum during the hurricanes but here is a ray of hope. A local employee, a “residential connectivity specialist,” has left us his contact information in case you still have problems, questions, concerns or just want to sound off! His name is Michael Oliveira -- his email is michael....@charter.com or 727-348-1054. I did tell him that Spectrum has lost a lot of ground in Lakewood and they might want to start thinking about restoring customer confidence.
DOG WASTE
We repeat here the msg about the person having the courtesy to pick up after their dog but then leaving the blue plastic bags of waste at the curb on Anastasia Way. Please keep an eye out for this dog-walker (we hope it’s not coming from a car!) and ask them nicely to either put the bag in the garbage can at 1618, put it in the dog waste station on the corner of Fairway and Alhambra, or take it home!

CRIME ALERT
The original report of theft from a vehicle at 2615 Desoto has turned out to be far more serious. This was in fact an armed robbery in which two men tried to get into a car occupied by a worker at the site. When the PD was called, the would-be robbers fled. They are described as black men with masks in a dark-colored sedan with tinted windows, which isn’t going to be very helpful. This is a very rare occurrence here; we can only hope it was a matter of opportunity.
GOLF COURSE
The golf course will reopen with an early tee time on Wed., Nov. 27. As this is the exact 100-year anniversary from the day the first player teed up, we can expect a good deal of happy excitement. We continue to see people taking their walks and pushing baby strollers on the course, obviously unaware they are trespassing. With the course opening up again, please nicely ask these folks not to do this.
TRAFFIC NOTE
Caesar Way at 54th A/S is open again.
FREE SHED
Kat Klingerman writes: “Our beautiful shed did not withstand the wind of Milton, but it can still be of use to somebody who wants to put a little time into putting it back together. It will require some brackets and some elbow grease. We paid about $700 for it new. Would like to get $50 for it. It’s a Craftsman, has a floor and is 7’x4’. I have quite a bit of the hardware, but not all. Call or text (305) 304-4354, or email kat...@mac.com.” Photo attached.
REPORTING A PROBLEM TO THE CITY
I know a lot of you don’t want to use seeclickfix because you can no longer do so with anonymity but there are a lot of areas you can report that don’t require publication of your name, including things like trees that need trimming, street signs down, pot holes, snipe signs, etc. The system is fairly easy to use -- I encourage you to become familiar with it. Go to seeclickfix.com and sign up for St. Petersburg.

CAR INSURANCE
Someone sent me the attached. I think it might be part of a larger article but in any event it’s an interesting read. FYI, our county averages over 15,000 crashes per year – it comes to about 40 crashes per day and about one crash for every 60 people! (The reason for the question about the loud car stereo is probably that a study showed when the music is over 90 dB, reaction time is reduced by 20%.)

HOLIDAY DELIVERIES
First, as always, please keep an eye out for porch pirates, cars seen following UPS, FedEx or Prime vehicles. If you don’t feel secure having packages delivered to your door, let me know.
Also let me know if you see UPS drivers cutting across the golf course on their carts. Their drop-off POD at the church on Caesar has arrived, so we ‘re going to see them scooting around. We haven’t had any problems in the last few years so here’s hoping ….
CHRISTMAS GIFTS IDEA
Kendra O’Connor’s talented daughter Quinn is taking part in an art show with her wonderful fabric creations. Quinn makes her products from scratch. She hand-prints her own fabric and embroiders on fabric. Her creations include zippered pouches, backpacks, purses, and bags. See the attached photo and flyer.
DEBRIS PICK-UP
The folks charged with picking up the mess after the hurricanes are almost done with their first pass through the city. They will make two more passes, so if you still have stuff in front of your house, fear not -- they will get to you.
WATER RESTRICTIONS
The one-day-only restriction has been lifted and you may now water twice a week. Those with reclaimed water are asked to be “water wise” and water at most 3 times a week.
ANNUAL DUES
Several people have asked about dues -- they are payable in January; a full reminder Bulletin will go out. Still $20. This year, with the PO raising rates yet again, we are going to save the Association a couple of hundred dollars by not mailing reminders and remittance envelopes to the members – you all get the Bulletin and know what to do; we will put out a list of payment method options. For now, if you want to get a jump on things, the renewal button for Paypal is on the website under Join Us. www.lakewoodstpete.com. As always, we welcome and encourage contributions to the swimming lessons, animal fund and food bank projects.
This year we will be adding another donation project, to plant trees in Lakewood. Over the years we have lost a lot of trees to disease and development but the two hurricanes really did a number on us (over 80 lost on the golf course alone). We are getting a grant from the city to plant trees but it won’t make a dent in the need -- more on this at the January meeting.

A WORD OF THANKS
We are overdue in our thanks to the volunteers who maintain our dog waste stations. This is, well, an icky job, and you are commended for your diligence and thoughtful consideration of our community!
On a related note, there are a few people in the area of the median at Coronada/Cardinal who appear to be indifferent to the waste station there and on a daily basis let their dogs do their business within a few feet of the basket. We are in the process of finding signs for this median in the hope of effecting a change in this habit. I mean, folks, really, you and your dog are standing right there!!
DEBRIS SITUATION
The City's Temporary Debris Management Site, located at 1953 72nd St. N, will cease public operations on Sunday, Dec. 22. Until then, residents can drop off vegetative, construction, and demolition debris at the site at no charge. Operating hours are 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Residents hiring private companies need to complete a Consent Form located at stpete.org/debris.
Starting Monday, Dec. 23, all City Brush Sites will resume normal operations and the City will start taking requests for Special Pickups. Details on Special Pickups and how to make a request can be found at stpete.org/SpecialPickup or you can call 893-7398.
The first 3 citywide passes for debris are completed; the next 2 are in process so there is hope we will eventually see an end to the piles at our curbs. A reminder NOT to put debris in plastic trash bags!
SOLICITATION PROBLEM
Photo attached: Please call the PD if you see this young man in the neighborhood. He is from Vivint and carries a TECO clipboard as part of his scam to sell solar power. Bonnie Rocks, a long-time Lakewood resident whom many of you know – she has lived here for 53 years-- is looking for part-time work as a caregiver. She has references and a lot of love and caring to share, especially with folks with dementia. She has cared for 6 folks in the last 25 years, and has given respite to spouses and families so those 6 could stay out of nursing homes and remain at home as long as possible. She is available day hours Monday to Saturday -- 727-329-9239.
TREES
Preparations are in progress for the Jan 25 planting. We have enough volunteers for planting but we are still looking for more volunteers to help with the Lakewood tree survey, which is required by the city as part of the grant program. We will have a meeting with Dean Hay, our City arborist, at 3 PM Sat Jan 25 as well. Dean will go over the process to add our trees to the survey. A small survey for Lakewood was started in 2023. MEETING REPORT
Notes from the meeting are available on request. Because I announced that this will be my last year in office, I have attached a list of areas of responsibility so that those who will respond to this request for volunteers can see what’s involved, at least in part. We have a year to segue into a new way of doing and I ask that anyone who wants to contribute with either suggestions, volunteering to serve or both, review that list. Please email me if you will attend a meeting (I will conduct) to get the transition rolling, and whether you prefer a weekday evening or a Saturday or Sunday so I can reserve a room at the clubhouse.
It goes without saying that many hands are going to be needed for a smooth transition to a new government. Pete will be available, either as vice president or a volunteer. Patsy will also leave at the end of 2025 so we are going to need someone to manage the bank account. At this time I do not know if Lois and John will stay on board. But in any event we need a group of volunteers so please email me asap.
Snowbirds are not excluded from this process. A great deal of what we do is done by email -- there are very few board meetings.
SOLICITATION WOES
As many of you know, the city passed the ordinance about annoying us at our doors but neglected to set up a method to inform those with solicitation permits, and we have had no luck getting anyone in the city to step up to solve this omission. With the new city council in place, and more importantly the new committee assignments, I think we may have hope to get this problem fixed. Stand by for updates.
DOGS STILL WAITING FOR THAT NEW HOME
This is a repeat message from Tom Ziri about 2 special dogs. Can you help?
Scooby to us from Hillsboro pet resource center in Tampa. He was dropped off by his family and left alone to die. Scooby had skin issues and ear infections. He is also undergoing treatment for heart worm. Scooby was mistreated and just needs a good home with no children and no cats . Scooby is dog selective. He is very afraid at first but he loves treats and will warm up slowly.
Glen came from Fayette County, Georgia. He was a stray. He has had all his shots and medical. He is super active and loves being outside. He definitely needs a fenced yard. He is very dog selective and alpha and would be best in a home with no other dogs and definitely no cats! He loves to go on walks and play all day. He loves being outside most of the day. He takes a bit to warm up to you but is a fluffy lap dog once he does.

LAKEWOOD ASSN TRANSITION MEETING
Please advise if you want to take part in the meeting to transition to a new government in 2026. The first meeting will be on February 16th at 2 p.m. in the ballroom of the Clubhouse.
Several people have expressed concern that they could not “do my job” as president but we need to think outside the box here. There is no rule that says we have to do things as they have always been done – there is always room for a new approach. It helps to remember that most associations were formed in a day when there was no email so perhaps the traditional Ways of Doing need to be re-examined. We are not a 501(c)(3) so we can be as loosy-goosy as we want.
TREE PLANTING
Planting with the City is still scheduled for tomorrow, Jan 25. Meet at 8:30 at Pete Robison’s house, 1921 Anastasia. If you can attend the tree inventory meeting with the city at 3 PM tomorrow, you will get a free tree, courtesy of LECA -- supplies limited. Our wonderful Aaron Hoffman and Kristen Ehrlich are honchoing this again, so please let me know if you want to help and I’ll pass it on. My apologies to Aaron and Kristen for this oversight.
BEAUTIFUL BIRD NEEDS NEW HOME
This parrot was initially posted a few months ago and the owner changed her mind… but now she really does have to find a new home. Here is what she writes:
This
is my sweet girl, Calypso. She will be 4 this May and she is a Blue Opaline
Quaker Parrot. She is a healthy,
bouncing ball of energy who has shared a home with two (senior) cats. She has
not been exposed to dogs, young children or adolescents. She is free-flight and
her wings are not clipped. She has been exposed to an infant but with limited interaction. She has two cages, which will go with her, in
addition to what toys and food she has left. Her “day” cage is a 2’ wide, 2’
deep, 4’ high metal cage which rolls and her “night” cage is a smaller one that
she only uses to travel to the vet or sleep in.
She is such a wonderful companion and I am so sad to admit that I am in
a situation that I cannot provide for her the way I intended. My hope is that
someone in the neighborhood has the extra love and room to take her in. Thank
you in advance for your help. Taylor. 740-403-8676

Thanks to all who helped out with the first round of tree planting. We planted 18 trees, 9 from the city and 9 that we purchased. Watering is going to be critical in the next several weeks. We are well on our way to improving the canopy. Attached is a fun shot of John Ermatinger, Joe Shadel and Theresa Cody beautifying the Cody lawn.
FIRST LAKEWOOD TRANSITION MEETING
Sunday, 2 p.m., February 16th in the ballroom of the Clubhouse. All members are welcome to attend to provide input, thoughts, suggestions, and/or join the team to be part of the “new government.” I know we have the rest of the year to do this but I also know that the end of the year is going to seem like tomorrow.
BEAUTIFICATION
To our surprise, when the city came to plant the trees we ordered, they put one on each of the 2 medians on Cadiz that have been unsightly deserts for years. If anyone would like to take advantage of the fact that these are now going to be watered (by the city) and do a little creative gardening, the Association will happily foot the bill. Just let me know.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR
Our second general meeting for this year is scheduled for March 5th. Duke will be there to talk about better communication during storms and more cooperation from their tree contractor. We will also have discussions about further plans for planting trees and the Association’s transition to new leadership. 7 p.m. in the ballroom of the Country Club.

DUES NAG #3
January is gone and some of our members still haven’t been heard from for the new year. Please either go to the website, lakewoodstpete.com, and click on Join Us to use Paypal; mail a check for $20 to PO Box 15903, St Pete 33733; or drop it in the pink box at my door, 1874 Juarez. The grace period expires on March 31st after which you won’t get the bulletins, be able to take part in any raffles, use your discount, etc.
EYESORE
In our last conversation with the developer who bought the fire-damaged house at 5340 Carolona, we were told work was in progress. Not only is it not in progress, but since then the two storms seem to have rendered the house a total wreck. The City is sending someone from Codes to see if there is anything worth saving. We are hoping for a demolition order.
BOYD HILL NATURAL SCIENCES SPEAKER SERIES
February 13, 7 p.m. at Hammock Hall, 3010 31st St S. “What’s Happening with Boyd Hill’s Gopher Tortoises?” Have you walked the trails at Boyd Hill and seen a gopher tortoise and wondered how they’re able to survive? Come and learn more about them as our speaker shares his knowledge and ongoing research to help them survive. The speaker is our own Jeffrey M. Goessling, PhD, Professor of Biology, Eckerd College.
SOAR FUND RAISER
Our neighbors Myron and Laura Hansen are sponsoring a fund-raiser for SOAR’s Pet Food Bank. A flyer is attached. This is next Saturday, the 14th at Stephen and Michael’s house at 1204 Asturia. Music, soda/wine/beer bar for donations, sandwiches and snacks. Parking is allowed on either side of the street and at the Hansens across the street from Stephen and Michael at 1201 Asturia. The beautiful backyard "heated pool" and hot tub will be open to those who would like to indulge. Please bring canned or dry pet food and/or make cash donations.
NEW SHOW AT THE WERK
Please see the attached flyer. This is not only a 2-year anniversary show but also a retrospective of the artists whose work has been shown. Opening is tonight at 5 p.m.
ANNUAL CLEAN-UP
Our clean-up event will be on April 12th. Please mark your calendar. Goodwill will be near the soccer fields from 10-12. The city dumpsters will arrive on Friday and be here all weekend. Make a note that the shredder will be the previous Saturday, April 5, from 10 to noon ONLY. There will be more information as we get closer but for now please volunteer for the 31st Street litter effort – the current plan is to have coffee and snacks at the kick-off and then at least one food truck for lunch. If you would like to help, please email Kristen at Kristen...@gmail.com or Aaron at ahoff...@gmail.com.
DOG NEEDS A NEW HOME
Please see the attached. The owner is desperate to find a new home for this really neat dog. Contact Darlene at d6...@aol.com or call the number on the flyer.
TREES
The trees we planted through the city grant program and on our own are being carefully monitored. The city will be watering the ones on the medians at Cadiz on a daily basis. The deciduous varieties don’t look very good right now but that’s what deciduous trees do when it’s cold! We are all asked to keep an eye on the new arrivals and if you see anything amiss, contact Pete at peter.d...@gmail.com. We recommend that you not water a tree without checking with Pete -- fatal over-watering does happen and he will know what needs to be done, if anything. There will be more discussion about this ongoing program at the March 5th meeting.

WATER
BILLS
If you recently received an outrageously high water bill, please let us know.
We are gathering information on how many are affected here and what if anything
they have been told about resolution. We
want to work with the residents and the city to get this resolved. Historically, this city’s utilities
department has been very good at stonewalling and insisting the problem is the
homeowner’s even when it obviously is not, and this appears to be the city’s ‘strategy’
in this crisis.
CHICKEN COOP NEEDED

HIGH WATER BILLS
Some of you may have noticed that there is a Pinellas County number you can call for help with a high water bill but we suspect this is only for customers of the county utility, not the city. If we find out otherwise, we’ll let you know. It appears that the problem with out-of-whack water meter readings, for whatever reason, is widespread. The trick now is convincing our own utility department that telling customers to spend $300 for a plumber to find a non-existent leak is not the way to go.
The city finally seems to be paying attention to this. Meanwhile, if you have an outrageous bill, email attorney Matt Weidner. He is all over this -- I suspect that if the city doesn’t find a sensible solution, he is gathering resources for a class action suit. wei...@mattweidnerlaw.com
DOGS IN NEED OF NEW HOMES
Please take another look at these two dogs Tom Ziri needs to rehome. Scooby came from a pet resource center in Tampa. He was dropped off by his family and left alone to die. Scooby had skin issues and ear infections. He is also undergoing treatment for heart worm. Scooby was mistreated and just needs a good home with no children and no cats.
He needs to be the only dog in the house.

MEETING REMINDER
We will meet at 7 p.m. this coming Wednesday, March 5th, at the Country Club. Duke Energy will be there for a discussion about better ways to work with them during difficult situations such as we encountered with Milton. They also have some new information they want to share. And this will be an opportunity, probably the last at a general meeting this year, to talk about ways to transition to new leadership in 2026.
Please bring anything you can spare from your pantry to help fill the Daystar truck.
If you still aren’t current on your dues, you can pay them at the meeting and save a 73-cent stamp😊 After March 31st your benefits, including these emails, will be suspended until payment is received.
WATER WOES
I discovered this week that my meter has not been read for many weeks -– the lid was overgrown with vegetation and the meter itself was also buried under twigs and leaves. This explains why my invoice showed I used 4 times more water than usual … the meter readers are not reading your usage, they’re guessing it. If you got a high bill, let Utilities know you are contesting it, ask for someone to come out and check your meter, and email Matt Weidner at wei...@mattweidnerlaw.com -- he is keeping track. The city has made an arrangement not to disconnect the water for contested invoices.
Attached is a photo of the inside of my water meter box – it‘s obvious the meter cannot be seen. The city sent out a supervisor, who reluctantly agreed that the meter was “misread.” I assume an adjustment will follow.
If you are being told you have a leak, look at your meter – if the gauge is not turning, no water is being used.
LOOSE DOGS
We are being told that there is a rental family on Alcazar that allows their 2 pit bulls to run loose (when they aren’t walking them on the golf course!). One of them recently bit a neighbor. We think this might be a family that used to rent on Lakewood Drive and only recently moved to Alcazar but in any event we would like to know who they are and where they live. Anyone?

It was a rather small turn-out, only about 34 people, but we had interesting presentations by both Duke and the city’s arborist, Dean Hay. MEMBERSHIP Nag #3 (or is it 4?)
The membership grace period expires at the end of this monthly, in roughly 2 weeks. If your membership is not current, it will be considered inactive until the dues are paid. It is always important to have a solid, active membership but all the more so as LECA moves toward new leadership in 2026.
You can pay the $20 in 3 ways:
Drop off a check or even cash (and a note with whose cash it is!) at 1874 Juarez Way. Use the pink box or clip the envelope to the outside of the mailbox.
Mail a check payable to LECA to PO Box 15903, St Pete 33733. If you can't mail, let us know -- we can pick it up.
Go the website and click on Join Us – there is a Paypal link there for renewals.
Please don’t let your membership go inactive -- these Friday Bulletins are the glue that holds this neighborhood together. You won’t want to miss out on the announcements, news, alerts, etc. Not to mention the tomtom system we were able to use during the hurricane outage, the raffle for Grand Prix tickets, and other fun stuff to get in on if you stay with us! Also, being on the Lakewood membership Facebook requires that you maintain your membership.
CALENDAR CHANGE
The “clean-up day” has become more of a clean-up month! We now have the shredder at the soccer field on April 5th; the dumpsters and Goodwill at the soccer field on April 12th; and the 31st Street litter walk on April 19th with the northern parking lot at the football field as the gathering place (flyer attached). The city of St Petersburg, PSTA and Car Free St Pete will be out supporting the event with tables set up for information on ongoing projects. Our thanks go out to Kristen Ehrlich, Aaron Hoffman and Matt Faulhaber for their efforts to put this together, and thanks in advance to all who take part!
VERIZON CABLE
Several people have asked why Verizon is digging up their yards. Like Frontier before them, Verizon has a permit from the city to lay fiber optic cable. In Lakewood, where easements can run deep, this can mean finding a crew standing in a hole in the middle of your yard. There is nothing you can do about this but you can insist that they repair/replace and not leave you with a mess.

SWIMMING LESSONS
It’s time to start putting together what we can to help the city with swimming lessons when the kids get out of school next month. Those lessons start right away so we need to begin thinking about this annual program. As always, the Association will kick off with $500. We would like to raise at least $2000 – more if we can – so that we reach at least 140 children. Send a check to the PO box (15903 at St Pete 33733), or use the Paypal link under About Us/Donate on the website (www.lakewoodstpete.com), or drop a check or cash – identified for the lessons – at my mail box, 1874 Juarez Way. And thanks!
If you are new to Lakewood: The city Parks Department charges about $35 for a 2-week swim class but for those with kids in the free lunch program, the cost is only $13 and change. The city has a fund for these kids but it’s never enough, so every year we contribute to it -- so far we have purchased lessons for more than 1500 children! Florida leads the country in childhood drowning deaths -- we are doing our part to change that awful statistic.
CALENDAR ALERT: HEADS UP!
Events in the annual St. Anthony’s Triathlon start next Thursday, the 24th, and as always the Olympic bike portion on Sunday will bring hundreds of bicycles through here starting early in the morning. Attached is the best map we can get at this time -- bottom line is that they will come in off MLK, go past the Clubhouse, down Fairway to Columbus and back to the Country Club via Green Way. Except for MLK/Country Club, we do not know which intersections will be controlled by the PD, usually until about 11 a.m., but it should be safe to get in and out off 54th west of Aragon, and 31st Street west of Columbus. If we get better info, we’ll publish it in the 4/25 Bulletin.
DAYSTAR
Thanks to everyone who contributed food and clothing to the Daystar truck last Saturday -- they were thrilled. We have advised them about our 3rd Thursday food truck program and told them they can always bring a truck. We will let you know if they plan to do that so you can donate food or clothing items.

The annual St. Anthony’s Triathlon began yesterday, and on Sunday hundreds of bicycles will come racing through here starting early in the morning. In case you missed it, here again is the map. You will get through – eventually – but sometimes the wait can be very long when large pelotons are passing.
We are told to expect most of the bikes to have passed through here by 11 a.m. but it may be longer.

LIGHTS
Someone recently asked about outdoor lights, apparently unaware that a couple of years ago the city amended its ordinance in response to concerns about nocturnal wildlife. Working with Boyd Hill, Sierra Club, St Pete Astronomy, and a couple of other “Dark Sky” organizations, we were able to convince the city to limit outdoor night lighting to 75w (something like 15 lumens). (We like to joke that most of us need only 40w to find our own front door!) Still, there are a few out there with very bright lights, front and/or back, and this is just a gentle reminder that with our proximity to Boyd Hill, we have a lot if critters passing through here who rely on darkness to do their thing, so if you have outdoor lighting, by all means enjoy it but please, when you turn in for the night, turn it off. The owls will thank you! (And by the way, per the Dark Sky Association, “There is no clear scientific evidence that increased outdoor lighting deters crimes. It may make us feel safer, but it has not been shown to make us safer.”)
GATOR PHOBIA
Apparently there is a resident at Country Club Villas with a gator phobia who calls Fish & Wildlife on a fairly regular basis to have a “nuisance” alligator removed. In other words, an innocent animal is losing its life because of one person’s irrational fear. It happened again last weekend -- this time the trapper trespassed onto the golf course to fish for the gator without seeking the required permission. Fish & Wildlife is going to counsel the trapper about this, and they are also going to flag the caller’s number to alert them to the possibility that the “nuisance” is more likely the caller than the animal. (If I can have a conversation with this Country Club Villas individual, I am going to suggest that he move to New Hampshire!)
If you see someone doing this on the golf course, call the non-emergency number at the PD and report a trespass (893-7780). If they have permission from the Country Club, then there’s nothing to be done about it but if they don’t, they have to get off the course.
And if you recognize the person in the attached photo, seen giving the trapper a hard time, please either ask her to call me or let me know who she is -- I want to thank her!
If you are new to Lakewood, the rationale here is that our neighborhood is part of the Boyd Hill wildlife area, the alligators were here long before us, we are in their territory, and it is up to us to be protective custodians of all the critters who share this place with us.
WATER RESTRICTIONS REMINDER
Rainfall in Lakewood Estates is over 2 inches below normal since the first of the year and we are in a "moderate” drought condition. It is also another month before the summer rains are due to start. Just a reminder to everyone that watering restrictions are still in force. We can water only from 5 to 9 AM and/or 7 to 11 PM on Tue and Sat if our house address ends in an even number. Odd number houses can water only Wed and Sun during those same times.

ROWDIES FUND RAISER
We are being asked to take part in a fundraiser in October that will pay $10 back to our Association for each $25 ticket sold. The plan would be to use that money for one of our ongoing programs, such as the Food Bank, but we would first like to get a sense of the level of interest. Before we get back to the Rowdies for more information (we believe there will be refreshments and some other forms of entertainment), please let me know whether you would have any interest. It’s October 18th at 7:30 p.m.
ALCAZAR ONE-WAY STREET INQUIRY
We recently polled the residents of Alcazar to see how they feel about turning it into a one-way street. Since the city has rejected this request, it is moot. But for the record, the vote was evenly split between those in favor of one-way and those opposed. The interesting thing was that most of the yes votes came from people living above the 4-way at Anastasia (technically “west”), no doubt because this is where the twisty-winding thing is the biggest concern. Below that intersection, Alcazar is a relatively straight street, so that getting in and out of a driveway is not as scary as it is where the road winds out of sight and where an illegally parked truck can create a real hazard.

NEW BUSINESS ANNOUNCEMENT
Kirk Hubert has opened a pet sitting/dog walking business. He is a long-time member who lives on Fairway. Here’s his card:

SOLICITATION ORDINANCE AMENDMENT
Enough of us asked for an amendment to the solicitation ordinance regarding hours so that the issue is going forward and will be discussed, brought to the appropriate city committee, etc. We are asking for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., ‘civilized’ business hours.
I haven’t given up trying to get the city to advise people with permits about what they can and cannot do, and will keep you informed. (I had a nice chat with someone in the County Consumer Protection office and he was as baffled as we are as to why a municipality would pass a law and then refuse to tell anyone about it!)
And I am going to take this opportunity to remind everyone that whatever these folks are selling, you can probably get it better and cheaper at a store or on the Internet (or by referral from a Lakewood neighbor!). Or you don’t need it (like subscriptions to magazines that don’t exist!) If for no reason other than safety, we recommend that if that's not a girl scout standing there, you do not open your door to strangers!

SWIMMING LESSONS FEEDBACK
Here is what we received via email from the city:
On behalf of the children in our community and everyone at the City of St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation, we want to extend our sincerest gratitude for your incredibly generous donation of $2900 towards swim lessons for underprivileged children.
This remarkable contribution will make a significant difference in the lives of these young individuals. Your support ensures that they will not only learn a vital life-saving skill but also gain confidence, enjoy healthy recreation, and create lasting positive memories. Access to swim lessons can be a challenge for many families, and your kindness has opened a door of opportunity that might otherwise have remained closed.
Thank you once again for your profound generosity and for investing in the safety and well-being of our community's children. We are truly grateful for your partnership.
Lakewood has now purchased lessons for more than 1700 children!
LAKEWOOD MEMBER NEEDS HELP
Please see the attached request from Stephen Bennett. He is looking for someone to help with his ailing mother and also for some assistance with his backyard.
SOLICITATION HOURS
Many thanks to all who emailed the city council for help with this problem. A new business item has been requested for the June 5th council meeting, at which time this matter should be referred to committee (probably Public Safety & Infrastructure) for consideration. We are asking for 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. -- normal, civilized business hours!
SEECLICKFIX – HOW NOT TO USE IT
It seems that the original arrangement for seeclickfix did not allow for the posting of requests for special pick-ups by Sanitation. That tool should be used only when there is stuff by the curb that is obviously not being dealt with. If you need a special pick-up, call -- do not use seeclickfix because it has no mechanism for assigning a date so you know when to put your trash by the curb. The result is that unsightly items like mattresses and toilets can sit out there for a week or more. Call 893-7398 and you will get a very quick response and a quick date. Please do not put your item(s) by the curb until the morning of the scheduled pick-up.

LAKEWOOD ANIMAL FUND
You may have seen a story on ABC News about a local cat rescue that was destroyed by fire late last week. This manufactured home housed over 60 animals, all in dire need of medical care -- many died, others were taken to various vets in the area, but all of the medications and supplies were destroyed, and of course the woman who was taking care of them is homeless. Lakewood used the animal fund and money from “whatever” to give Happy Tailz $1000 to help get it back on its feet.

DOG FOOD NEEDED
Daystar, which we supported so generously at our meeting last January, is in serious need of dog food. Daystar provides food, medical and other services to the neediest in our community -- and that includes taking care of the furry family members. They are very well stocked with cat food at this time but if you can bring a bag or cans of dog food to the car port at Stephen Bennett’s house, 1204 Asturia, it would be much appreciated. I found it easiest to have Amazon deliver the food to him but you can also bring it directly to Daystar at 1055 28th St S.
BAD DRIVING
We are seeing a lot of speeding and stop sign running -- cars were flying up Country Club Wednesday evening, and yesterday a woman barreling down Alcazar in a black SUV nearly plowed into me because she was determined not to stop at the 4-way. She cursed me out thoroughly for being in her way while her teenage passenger flipped me the bird. Is this who we are? We have asked the PD for a few days of directed patrols to send a message with a few tickets.

SHORT-TERM RENTALS
It seems that at least some of the corporations that have bought houses here in Lakewood are putting them up for short-term rentals such as AirB&B. Either they don’t know that’s not allowed in this city or they don’t care. If you know of a house being used this way, please let us know – Codes will get on it. With the housing market tightening up, it’s likely that companies who bought to flip and make a quick buck are discovering they have to find some other way to make money off their investment.
TURTLES VS TORTOISES
We’ve been getting a lot of calls about wandering “turtles,” and wanted to remind everyone about the important difference between turtles and tortoises: Turtles do water; tortoises do not. If you put a tortoise in a pond, it will drown. If you see something with a shell crossing the road, by all means get it out of danger. Do this by putting it on land and in the direction it was going, even if it’s into someone’s yard. These critters have regular places where they lay their eggs every year -- they know where they’re going. Our job is to keep them safe. Also: gopher tortoises are protected – if you see one that needs to be relocated, get it out of the road but otherwise do not handle it. Contact one of our authorized herpetologists: Jeff Goessling at jeff.go...@gmail.com or George Heinrich at high...@aol.com. You can also notify Boyd Hill if you see a gopher tortoise that needs help. 893-7326.
BAD SOLICITATION SITUATION
See attached -- and watch out for these two -- a man and a woman trying to convince you to let them inspect your roof for storm damage. They were rude, relentless, ignored the NO SOLICITING sign, wouldn’t leave when told to, and even returned to a house where they were turned away the day before. We have left a msg at their Tampa HQ requesting that they stay out of Lakewood.

SOLICITATION UPDATE
The PS&I committee of the City Council has voted to move forward on our request to add time restrictions to the ordinance governing solicitation. The proposal is to ban soliciting between 7 p.m. (or after sundown) and 8 a.m. We had hoped to prevent it before 9 a.m. but there are legal reasons why that was ill-advised. We will probably receive a draft of the new ordinance and will pass it on. The city’s failure to inform solicitors about the ordinance remains an issue but we will continue to work to have it addressed.

AMENDMENT TO CITY SOLICITATION ORDINANCE
Here is the proposed language:
(7) Ring the bell, knock on the door, or otherwise attempt to gain admittance, for the
purpose of peddling or soliciting, at any residence, dwelling or apartment between the
hours of 7:00 p.m. or sunset, whichever is earlier, and 8:00 a.m. the following day.
The first reading will be held at the July 24th Council meeting. At that meeting, City Council will set the second reading and public hearing for the August 7th Council meeting. We cannot imagine that there will be any strong resistance.
As a side note, we are hearing that, as you might expect, we are not the only neighborhood complaining about unwanted solicitation, and at the top of the list of the offending companies are the solar panel folks.
STOLEN LAWN MOWER
Someone in a truck passing through here yesterday saw an opportunity to help themselves to a resident’s lawn mower while he stepped inside for a moment. This happened on Alhambra, one of two streets in Lakewood that are heavily traveled by cut-throughs, usually at speeds in excess of 25 or even 35, and with little regard for our stop signs. The other cut-through is Columbus, used to get from 54th to 31st or vice versa. We know for certain that the Columbus short-cut is not in fact a time saver. With our speed limits (even when ignored), our speed humps and (again even when ignored) stop signs, it actually takes longer to get from 54th to 31st through here than it does on the main road. In any event, the lesson for those living on these roadways is not to leave anything out there to tempt the lawless.

(If you are new to Lakewood or the Association, Maximo is the school at 31st Street near 47th Ave. We adopted them a few years ago because like a lot of Florida schools, they are seriously underfunded and under-supplied.)
Student Needs
Sweat shirts (Small, Med, large XL) any color (NO HOODIES)
Shoes all sizes for girls and boys
Clear book bags (10) (now $11.98 at Walmart)
Composition book (black, wide ruled) as many as possible (now .39 at Target)

DOG WASTE STATIONS

TRANSITION NOTE
As we get closer to the end of the year and my retirement, I’d like to remind everyone that it’s going to be more important than ever to keep your eyes on things. We have always been vigilant about not allowing unkempt properties to threaten the value of our homes, and our safety, but since last year’s hurricanes a lot of houses have been snapped up by investors and we are seeing some unpleasant stuff. Under the Broken Window theory of neighborhood disintegration, one neglected property can be the start of decline on a whole street. If you see a situation that needs attention, please do not leave it to “someone else.” Call Codes at 893-7373 or go online to https://seeclickfix.com/st-petersburg.
Also, I am looking for someone to take charge of the “our neighbors are watching” crime signs and the H frames for them. Just a matter of putting one by your door when someone asks or passing them on to the “welcome lady” to bring to a new resident. Let me know if you can help.

IMPORTANT CRIME ALERT
Several months ago, we received word of a package delivered in Lakewood with an unidentifiable recipient, Lissa DeWitt. We never found her and the package was returned. Yesterday another resident received 2 packages addressed to DeWitt and notice that 7 more were on the way.
The Police believe that these are items bought with stolen credit cards and delivered to random addresses where the thieves hope to retrieve them from the front porch before the homeowner knows they’re there.
If you receive this sort of package (and it could have a different name), either let me know or call the PD and ask for an officer to come out, get the package and write up a report. This way the PD can work with the seller and/or the delivery service to try to catch these crooks. If you have a camera, you should feel free to play detective and leave the package at the door to see who comes for it!
SOLICITATION LAW
We are pleased to inform that the addition to the city’s solicitation law limiting the hours when these nuisances can ring your doorbell has been enacted. AVOIDING DECAY IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD
Recently we reported two properties to Codes that have been a mess for a long time, and we confess to being concerned that no one noticed – or if they did, they didn’t feel they should report. 4600 Cortez Way S has a yard full of debris and vehicles and has been cited for this sort of offense 10 times. A member did finally contact us about that place. 1311 Alcazar is a rental property with a laundry list of violations – we have written to the owner at his 6 bedroom, $1.5 million house on Snell Isle but he apparently doesn’t care that his rental property is an eyesore for us. The point here is that no one should fail to report this stuff for fear of retaliation -- it just doesn’t happen -- and the alternative is to let eyesores become the start of a contagious “disease” that can quickly spread to an entire block. There’s a lot to learn from the ‘broken windows theory’ of neighborhood decay. Please, everyone – if you see a mess, report it. It’s up to all of us to protect the neighborhood we love. If you don't have a seeclickfix account, you can always call Codes directly at 893-7373.

It has apparently become popular to use seeclickfix to report minor traffic sign problems, and the proliferation of these reports has become troubling. One man who only rides his bike through here last week reported 6 “leaning” signs in one day – not one of those signs was far enough off the vertical to warrant attention. A street sign with a slight tilt is not a problem. Please remember that most of our city departments are seriously understaffed -- there are many major problems they are struggling to address and it is not helpful to load them up with trivia. Please use restraint and limit reporting to things that really need attention.
DO NOT OPEN THAT DOOR!
We have videos of two men who tried to get into a house where they probably thought the elderly woman was alone. She opened the door both times (!) but fortunately others were there. A white man tried to get money, and a black man wanted a drink of water. This was the day after the elderly couple in New York were murdered by a man who said he needed to charge his phone. Please do what you can to make sure your older family members never, ever open the door to a stranger.

NOISE ORDINANCE
We want to make everyone aware of a new policy at the police department, a very unfortunate one that we are working to undo. Until recently, you could call to report noise, such as a loud party, without identifying yourself unless you wanted the offender to be cited. Now, for reasons that make no sense, even if all you want is an officer to ask for the music to be turned down, you have to give your name and address. This is reckless and dangerous. We have reached out to the PD’s attorney (no reply so far), the city attorney and the city council to find out why this happened and to try to get it undone.

FOOD PANTRY
Our member Kris McTaggert, who volunteers at the Free Clinic, writes:
A reminder to Lakewood neighbors that the St Pete Free Clinic Food Pantry provides groceries to all Pinellas County residents in need. The pantry is located at 863 3rd Ave N and is open Mon-Wed., 8:30-3:00 and Thurs. 8:30-7 pm. There is also a drive thru location at the "Deuces," 2198 15th Avenue South, St., open Mon & Wed. 2:00-6:00 p.m. Guests may pick-up groceries twice a month.
Anyone wishing to donate food (dry goods, canned goods or hygiene items) may drop items to my front porch at 4117 Narvarez Way. All donations are appreciated! Money donations, in particular, help the SPFC purchase large volumes of food for pennies on the dollar of retail prices. Information and the link for monetary donations can be found on their website www.thespfc.org.
FALL FESTIVAL – BBQ
Just a reminder that next Saturday, 11/8, is our annual Fall Festival at Boyd Hill, from 11-2. Come out and enjoy bbq and the fixin’s -- and the return of ‘outdoor’ weather. Feel free to bring a dessert or cookies. And as members you are of course encouraged to let your neighbors know if you own a business or have a product to promote.
SAILFUTURE EVENT
SailFuture is holding a community homecoming event from 4-7 p.m. on November 8th at their academy, 2154 27th Avenue N. Music, food, bouncy houses, arts & crafts. If you aren’t familiar with the work this organization does with at-risk kids, go to sailfuture.org. They have a group home in Lakewood.
LAMPS FOR SALE
We have attached again the photo of the 3 designer lamps offered by Lin Teichman - LinTe...@gmail.com – this time with a separate document with details.
31 STREET CLEAN-UP
We will be doing another clean-up on 31st Street on November 15th. Details will follow.
FREE DRY EYE MED
I have at least 5 unopened boxes of Restasis that I will give away. Email me at jelli...@gmail.com.
FALL FESTIVAL BBQ TOMORROW
We meet at Boyd Hill tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. to mix and mingle and enjoy pork and chicken BBQ with the fixin’s. Bring a chair or a picnic blanket. If you have a business or product you want to tell your neighbors about, by all means set up a table or pass out cards -- whatever works for you. If you care to bring a dessert or cookies, please do. Also, you are asked to bring warm clothing or blankets to donate -- there will be a collection for the homeless. Finally, a reminder that dogs are not allowed at Boyd Hill.
CIRCO PIZZERIA AND ITALIAN KITCHEN NOW OPEN
The Italian restaurant at Bay Pointe Plaza, 34th Street S, where the Portofino used to be, is open. For this week and next, you are asked to make reservations -- 498-6632. They are open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
THE BUZZ CAFÉ
We have been asked to remind everyone about the new and unusual café next to the Vintage Marche, 2920 34th Street (at the Aldi strip mall). Exceptional coffee and pastries in an inviting space with the added attraction of a store full of vintage goodies. Open Tuesday-Sunday, from 9-3.
NEW SHOW AT THE WERK
The show opens tonight at 5 p.m. See the attached flyer for details.
SWEET DOG NEEDS A FOREVER HOME
Joe Cantwell writes: "Hello all. I have a young dog I'm taking care of and trying to rehome if any of you or anyone you know is looking for a pup. She's an 8-month-old Border Collie/mountain cur mix. Up to date in everything, chipped, spayed, sweetheart of a dog. I'm just trying to find her a good forever home. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks." Photo attached.
FREE REFRIGERATOR
Old but works well, including the freezer. A good appliance for a “spare” in the garage. Two people will be needed to haul it away. Contact Bonnie at bonnier...@gmail.com or call 727-329-9239.
YARD SALE
Tomorrow, from dawn to dusk, 2100 Caesar Way So.
SAILFUTURE EVENT – SECOND NOTICE

SOFA FOR SALE
Christina Warnstedt writes: “This is a great sofa! Uniquely long and deep. We love it, but needed to get something new because of size. Recently deep cleaned too. $175
Measurements: 96" long, 39" deep, 27" tall." 828-719-5880
RECYCLE
This is not a recycle week. Our Monday garbage collection will not be affected by the Veteran’s Day holiday on Tuesday.
Everyone seemed to have a good time at last Saturday’s BBQ, although it was certainly a lot warmer than we anticipated! Still, good company, good fun, good food. Thanks to all who helped out!
CLEAN UP TOMORROW
Please meet tomorrow at 8 a.m. in the northern parking lot of the football complex at 54th Avenue S and 31st Street to help out with the 31st Street clean-up. All the tools needed will be provided, and you will enjoy coffee and pastries to fuel you for the walk! As new members of Keep Pinellas Beautiful, we are now committed to doing 4 of these each year, which is going to make 31st Street a whole lot less messy. Hats off to Kristen Ehrlich for her hard work to make that street cleaner and safer.
PET FOOD IS NEEDED
The EBT shutdown has created food crises for pets as well as people. Shelters in the area are seeing a marked uptick in cats and dogs being surrendered because the owners can’t afford to feed them. Please bring pet food to the bench under the carport at 1204 Asturia so that our Stephen Bennett can get it to those in need. Canned, dry, cat, dog, bird, small or large – everything helps. If you have clean sheets or towels that can be used for animal bedding, that would be most welcome. And if you know someone who is struggling to feed their pet, just let us know.
BORDER COLLIE STILL NEEDS A HOME
Joe Cantwell is still trying to find a home for the border collie mix. She's 9 months old, up to date on everything, chipped, spayed, sweetheart of a dog, very smart and very affectionate. New photo attached. Please let Joe know if you can help. Hotd...@gmail.com.
REGIONS BANK
Regions Bank is a neighborhood business partner with Lakewood Estates. We have our account there and have always been very satisfied with the quick and personalized service. Unlike most banks, Regions is set up so that when you call, you are calling your branch -- no long waits on hold, and a real person answers. They also seem to have better rates on almost everything. Attached is a flyer for their current Home Equity loan; no application fee, and no closing costs up to $250,000. Their branch is just around the corner on 54th Ave S. If you have questions or want to talk about an account, call Louise LaValla, the manager, at 471-4170. Be sure to say you’re Lakewood.

LECA BOARD
We have a new board ready to take the reins in 2026. They are Leonard Coley, President; Matthew Faulhaber, Vice President; and Laura Hansen, Secretary. You are urged to come to the 2026 annual meeting (January 21st, 7 p.m. at the Country Club) to meet your new officers and take part in a lively discussion about the plans for 2026. A full chart of all the people who are going to be assisting the board will be sent in a Friday Bulletin and also posted on the website.
CRIME ALERT
Two teenage boys were caught ransacking a car on Alhambra on Monday afternoon. An alert neighbor notified the owner, who found the boys a couple of blocks away. They didn’t take anything -- there was nothing in the car to take -- but they will probably not forget the lecture they got from the owner. The important thing here is that the neighbor noticed and took action. This is the best thing you can do to prevent crime – Observe and Report. The videotape, salty language and all, is available -- email jelli...@gmail.com if you want to see it. We don’t think the boys live here but someone might recognize them so that their parents can get a visit from our Community Service Officer.
NEGLECTED RENTAL PROPERTIES
We are working with Codes to bring attention to three rental properties in Lakewood that have long been neglected eyesores. Even though Codes Enforcement has finally returned to the practice of generating their own cases, we cannot rely on them to protect us from absentee owners who have no interest in preserving the value of our homes. With the change in Association leadership coming up in January, we cannot overemphasize the importance of our members staying alert and reporting these problem properties. And we urge you not to be intimidated by the anonymity situation -- a residential property owner in California, Ontario or Arizona is not going to come looking for the person who reported their mess! Watch out for smelly pools, trash and debris, missing house numbers, yard parking, inoperative cars, loud noise, and the possibility of an unlicensed business being run from the house.
DOGS NEED NEW HOMES
Attached are photos of two dogs we previously requested help for. Scooby came from a pet resource center in Tampa, dropped off by a family and left to die. He is getting treatment for heartworm. He was mistreated and needs a home with no children and no cats. He is afraid at first but will warm up -- he loves treats! Glen was a stray from Georgia. He is super active and will need a fenced yard. He is best in a home with no other dogs -- and no cats. Once he warms up, he is a fluffy lap dog. Please visit www.floridasharpeirescue.com or text Tom at 727-743-2941 for more information.
BEES?
One of our members is looking to buy some local honey. Is anyone in Lakewood keeping bees?
TREES
We are going to plant another round of trees in Lakewood in early 2026 and urge our members to let us know if they would like to get involved. We would like folks to request a tree as well as volunteer to help with the planting -- or both! Email peter.d...@gmail.com.
HOUSE NUMBERS
It would appear that at least 1/5 of the houses in Lakewood do not have numbers. City ordinance requires a visible number at least 4” high, visible from the road and in a color contrasting with the house paint. City ordinance aside, it’s a major safety issue -- fire, EMT and police folks can’t find you if they can’t see a number. We have a limited quantity of numbers left over from years ago when we got a grant to give them out, so don’t hesitate to email me to see if your numbers are still available. They won’t win you any home décor awards but they’re free -- and the rescuers will be able to find you!
RECYCLE
This is not a recycle week. Thursday’s garbage pick-up will be on Wednesday – it’s turkey week!
PORCH PIRATES R IN SEASON
In case you missed it, the porch pirates have gone from just swiping things from your front door to using stolen credit cards to mail stuff to people they know aren’t home all day and helping themselves to the delivery. (We believe we have a house in Lakewood being used for this purpose.) They are also mugging FedEx drivers as they carry parcels to the door. You are urged to find someone who is home during the day to receive your packages, or use one of the lock boxes offered by providers like Amazon, or just let the Association know you need a safe place to mail stuff. I am almost always home and my front door is not visible from the street. Keep an eye out for a vehicle that seems to be following a delivery truck. And once again we ask you to let us know if you see UPS golf carts being driven on the golf course to short-cut a delivery route -- this is a huge no-no.
DOG WASTE STATIONS
I doubt anyone in this group is doing this but if you are, or if you see someone doing it, please make note that the dog waste stations are not for the deposit of garbage. We are finding coffee cups and all sorts of stuff in them. They are messy enough without this sort of additional garbage. Thanks!

NEW RECORD – NOT A GOOD ONE
Florida set a new national record in 2025. So far this year there have been 110 child drownings. Lakewood is doing its part by contributing to the city’s fund to provide free lessons for underprivileged kids – over 1700 -- but obviously more programs statewide are needed. It’s an appalling statistic.
NEW SHOWS AT THE WERK
Just a reminder. One show opens tonight, the other on Dec. 13th. These shows are specifically aimed for Christmas shopping, so check them out. 2210 First Avenue South. 5-8 p.m. Best parking is in the rear.
DROUGHT!
We are reminded by SWFWMD that we are now officially in a drought and restricted to watering only twice a week. In fact, in the winter, your lawn will survive quite nicely with only once a week! And if you have reclaimed water, please be stingy with it – after all, the water all comes from the same place.

HANDMADE ITEMS FOR SALE
For the third year in a row, member Kendra O’Connor’s daughter, Quinn, is in an art show with her handmade wares. This is the annual "Appetizers & Art: A Christmas Open House and Art Show," tonight and tomorrow night, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 410 72nd Street S. Quinn makes hand-prints and embroidery on linen for pouches, backpacks, shoulder bags, etc. Other artists have items in clay, paper, glass, ceramics, photography and more. The event and the nibbles are free.
WINTER CLOTHING FOR HOMELESS
Tom Ziri is collecting jackets, sweaters, blankets, towels (clean, please, if possible) for the homeless. Please bring whatever you can to 1128 Alhambra Way S.
NEW CAR TAG LAW
As of this month, Florida has banned all license plate frames, regardless of material and size. The attached illustration mentions anything that covers the tag -- we believe most of that has long been illegal, and the new law is directed only at frames. Use of a frame is a 2nd degree misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500 and/or 60 days in jail.
MEMO FROM THE POLICE
Attached is a response we got from the chief of police regarding the ongoing problem of lack of information. Many of you have found out, when you email me to inquire about a police presence, that we cannot get real-time information -- the excuse is always that it’s an “ongoing investigation.” Even when it would be helpful for the PD to have our citizens aware of a situation (for example, a pursuit where we should stay indoors and out of the way), the PD will not tell us anything. The attached explains the PD’s reason for not putting an ‘active calls for service’ page on its website, something that every other law enforcement agency in this area (and most of the country) has been doing for years. There is not a single recorded instance of a police officer being injured because a call was posted, but our PD continues to believe that an active calls page will endanger officers and the public. I pass this on so you will understand why, even when you have a half dozen cruisers outside your door, your Association Crime Watch cannot find out what’s going on.

TRANSITION TO NEW LEADERSHIP
Please plan to attend the annual meeting on January 21st at 7 p.m. at the Country Club as we segue to new leadership. Also note that starting on January 1st, messages for the Association president should be directed to lecapre...@gmail.com. I will continue to prepare the Friday Bulletin but it will come to you from jelli...@gmail.com.
A full list of the board and volunteers is attached here and has also been posted to the website: www.lakewoodstpete.com. In the future, if you have need for information or assistance, please check there first. And if you want to become part of the volunteer team, just get in touch with the new president, Leonard Coley.
WINTER CLOTHING FOR HOMELESS
As we reported last week, Tom Ziri is collecting jackets, sweaters, blankets, towels (clean, please, if possible) for the homeless. Please bring whatever you can to 1128 Alhambra Way S. Also, if you have a wheeled suitcase or a wagon you can spare, please donate that as well -- anything the homeless can use to carry around their belongings. Tom’s phone number is 743-2941 -- text is best.
FREE HOME HEALTH CARE ITEMS
A walker with wheels, a device for help with putting on socks (very useful if you’ve had knee surgery!), a toilet seat booster, and a portable “bedside” commode are available for free. Only the walker has ever been used. Email cherl...@gmail.com.
FLORIDA LICENSE PLATE LAW – CLARIFICATION
We weren’t the only ones confused by the information about this new law. License plate frames are not illegal. As long as the state is readable, even if partly cut off, and the renewal sticker clearly legible, the frame is legal.
NOISE
Attached is an email one of our members received from Councilwoman Lisset Hanewicz in response to a complaint about last weekend’s awful noise. The PD received 62 calls – quite possibly something of a record – and the mayor’s office was also flooded with complaints. This is an opportunity for the residents of this city to bring about a meaningful update and improvement to our city’s noise ordinance, which is ineffective, outdated and largely unenforceable. You can voice your opinion to cou...@stpete.org and/or ma...@stpete.org. We think the problem finally has their attention.

NEW LEADERSHIP
This is the last Bulletin you will receive from lecapresident. As always, do not reply to the sender as this probably won’t work, but you can email the new president, Leonard Coley, at lecapres...@gmail.com. If you want something included in the Bulletin, use the jellis5610 address. If there is any question about content, I will be conferring with the new leadership.
COUNTRY CLUB ANNUAL INVITATIONAL
The neighborhood will be abuzz beginning next weekend for the Club’s annual golf invitational. We can expect an uptick in traffic starting on Thursday, possibly earlier. A reminder to be patient -- most of us can barely find our way around so visitors can be expected to be equally lost.
Also a reminder to try to keep our visitors off the golf course. We had kids on bicycles this past week, and yesterday a couple with 4 dogs wandering around near the 15th green. Please gently remind these folks that they are trespassing.
RECYCLE
This is a recycle week. Thursday’s garbage collection will be on Wednesday.
Please note that this Bulletin comes from jellis5610, not lecapresident. If you want to correct or add something to the Bulletin, you can use Reply. If you have something about Lakewood or the Association to discuss, please email president Leonard Coley at lecapre...@gmail.com.
2026 MEMBERSHIP
You will soon be receiving, via snail mail, our annual flyer and the remittance envelope for your dues, still only $20. If you wish to use Paypal, the location on the website is under Join Us, where there is a link for renewals. www.lakewoodstpete.com. You can also bring the dues, with your envelope so we know who you are, to the January 21st meeting.
Dues are good for the calendar year. They are payable in January but there is a grace period until 3/31, after which your privileges, including this Bulletin, will be suspended until dues are received.
As always, please consider making a donation to one of our programs -- the Food Bank, swimming lessons for underprivileged kids, the animal fund (which pays for the initial vet visit and neutering for a stray adopted in Lakewood), and the “Cares” fund (which supports special projects like Maximo). Just add the amount to your check and indicate in the memo line where you want the money to go. If you don’t specify, it goes into what we call the ”whatever” fund. (A separate check for a donation is not needed.) Also note that the situation for the kids at Maximo Elementary still needs attention, so that come late summer we will almost surely be looking for donations to get them shoes, underwear, socks and uniforms.
COUNTRY CLUB ANNUAL INVITATIONAL
A reminder that this weekend is the annual invitational golf tournament at the Country Club. Please be extra careful driving around -- lots of cars and golf carts and people, many of them lost.
NEW SHOWS AT THE WERK
The gallery opens a month of new shows tonight, from 5-9, with two artists from Guatemala. Art talks with the artists will be held on January 24th, and the shows run simultaneously from tonight through February 1st. 2210 First Ave. Best parking is in the rear.
CHRISTMAS TREE PICK-UP

TREES
A reminder that if you wish to donate to LECA when you pay your dues, we also have a fund to plant trees, which are always needed but all the more so after the storms of ’24. And we have trees available for planting -- all you need to do is ask. Contact our tree person, Pete Robison -- he will come to your property and talk to you about the best tree and where to put it. And it’s free. Contact Pete at peter.d...@gmail.com. You can also text him to 727-421-3305.
Pete is also looking for volunteers to help with the planting. And he urges those who have good tree coverage to check with their neighbors, look around to see where trees are needed and let him know.
FOOD TRUCKS
There will be two food trucks this coming week, January 15th, from 5-8 p.m. at the soccer fields. Happy Snapper and Bellies.
VOTING
There’s a lot going on right now with regard to rules and regs regarding voting, especially voting by mail -- we will keep you informed as they are finalized. We do want to suggest that you check to make sure your signature hasn’t changed enough to invalidate your ballot, and also to make sure your driver’s license matches the Supervisor’s records. Go to votepinellas.gov to check up on these things -- most of what you need to know is under the Voters drop-down menu. (The Pinellas supervisor is making arrangements to notify people if there are problems with their ballot, assuming there is time, so that the voter can come in and make any necessary corrections. The message these days, for those voting by mail, is probably to vote early!)
ROAD CLOSURE
Desoto Way between Cortez and 31st Street is going to be closed for 4 days, from January 12th through the 16th for the installation of new power poles.
DROUGHT

HELP FOR THE HOMELESS
Just a reminder that you are urged to donate used clothing, bedding, towels, etc. to the homeless. You can contact Tom at tom...@gmail.com or mrslh...@gmail.com and they will pick it up from your house.
GRAND PRIX TICKET RAFFLE
We would like to hold our customary raffle for free tickets to the Friday trials but rely on donations of those passes. The city normally gives us only 2 or 4 and we would like at least a dozen. So if you are a volunteer with extra passes or know someone who does, please pass them on so we can spread them around.
TWO GOOD DOGS IN NEED OF NEW HOMES
Two of our members are doing their best to find new homes for dogs who are without an owner and have been for too long. Please check these out and if you can’t adopt, perhaps you know someone who can.
1. Joe Cantwell is still trying to rehome a dog for a friend. Photo attached. She's about 11 months old, 3/4 border collie and 1/4 mountain cur. Spayed, all shots, chipped, house broken. Very smart and very loving and affectionate. Gets along with kids and other animals. Almost hate to let her go, but I'd much rather she wind up in a loving home than take her to a rescue/shelter. Please contact me at 727-563-6246 if interested. Thank you.
2. Attached is a flyer about Shep, a dog whose owner is hospitalized and no longer able to care for him. The dog is alone in the house, all day, every day, except for brief care visits. Please see the flyer for details.
SNIPE SIGNS
You may have noticed that the “Buy Used Cars” guy is back, with a vengeance. This man has been fined thousands of dollars and even put in jail but he never quits. If you see one or more of his signs, you can notify codes at 893-7373 or just let me know and I’ll pass it on.

ANNUAL MEETING
About 80 people turned out for the annual Association meeting, nicely managed by our new board. I won’t go into detail about the incredible send-off I received except that I am still reeling and cannot thank everyone enough for the kindness and generosity. This neighborhood rocks! (I will repeat what I told the group – which is that it is I who should be thanking – thanking you for making this the greatest neighborhood in the city!)
One of the items emphasized at the meeting is the list of volunteers who are now handling a multitude of Lakewood association tasks. When you have an issue, please first go to the website and see if there is a person addressing it. The website is given at the bottom of this email and at the bottom of every Friday Bulletin. If you can’t find someone there, email President Leonard Coley at lecapre...@gmail.com.
SOLICITATION PROBLEM
An ongoing sensitive issue was raised by a member at the meeting -- the problem of solicitation, the city’s failure to inform solicitors about St Pete’s law, and the police department’s inability to deal with the offenders. While we wait for a local government willing to publish and enforce its own ordinance, we have asked the city to allow NO SOLICITATION signs to be installed at our 4 main entrances -- it’s the best we can do at this time. We will keep you informed.
STOP SIGN ISSUE
Another touchy issue is the intersection of Cordova Way and Anastasia, where north/south traffic has a stop sign that is regularly ignored. This is probably the most dangerous intersection in Lakewood but after a review a few years ago, the city concluded that the intersection did not meet its requirements -- presumably not dangerous enough! Instead they installed “cross traffic does not stop” signs -- which are also ignored. We have requested another review of the situation and fully intended to escalate if we receive another denial.
DOG NEEDS A HOME - REPEAT REQUEST
Shep, the dog we wrote about last week, is happily in a new home but Joe Cantwell’s border collie mix is still looking. Joe writes: “She's about 11 months old, 3/4 border collie and 1/4 mountain cur. Thank you.”

CRIME ALERT
We had several bicycles stolen in Lakewood this past week, on Columbus and Mikol Terrace. Please be sure to close your garage doors, and do not leave bicycles in your yard unattended. Kids come across 54th Avenue -- we have them on camera -- and wander through here looking for easy bikes to walk off with.
SPAM ALERT
If you get an email seeking information about the Association from this address, Leonard Coley presiden...@gmail.com, note that this is spam. This is not our association president’s email address. The correct address is lecapre...@gmail.com.
DUES REMINDER
Just a reminder that dues are payable in January and that the grace period expires on March 31st. Also, if your PayPal account is through your business, please try to include something in the notes to tell us who you are by providing your name or the email address we use for you.
WATER RESTRICTIONS
We are in a “severe drought” so SWFWMD has amended the restrictions starting February 8 to once a week. This is for city water and well water, and if you have reclaimed, please limit to once a week. This restriction is scheduled to be in effect until July 1st. Hand watering is still allowed. For more details see District Water Restrictions | WaterMatters.org. The city of St Petersburg is responsible for enforcing this restriction and may announce more details soon on exact watering days and times.
If you are new to the area, SWFWMD stands for Southwest Florida Water Management District, affectionately (!) known as Swiftmud.
EARLY VOTING SITE
There are no early voting locations in south St. Petersburg, so the local League of Women Voters is joining other groups to hold a town hall tomorrow at Dominion Worship Center, 4034 12th Ave S, from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM to discuss ways to fill that void.
SKYWAY MARINA BASEBALL EVENT

The menu is attached. If you have questions, contact District Director Misty Bottorff at 466-7173. URN PAINTING AND REPAIR
It has been many years since we painted the urns that represent our neighborhood; a couple of them are in sorry shape -- the one where Alcazar and Alhambra meet near MLK and one of the two on 31st Street need attention in addition to paint. We’d like to put together a group to address this, so please contact President Leonard Coley if you can help, at lecapre...@gmail.com. The Association will pay for the paint and tools, and if repair is needed, we can ask the city’s Neighborhood Affairs office for help – they did this for us last time. The condition of these urns is giving our otherwise gorgeous neighborhood a bit of a black eye.
DOG WASTE STATIONS
Tom Ziri, who manages 3 of our 8 waste
stations, sends the following message:
I want to thank everyone who uses the dog stations. It really helps keep
our yards and streets clean.
Please put in only dog waste and no personal trash, especially liquids.
When you throw in your soda or coffee, it makes a huge mess and also creates
bugs -- and that causes major issues for me.
Also please clean up after your dogs. There are lots of “piles of poo”
right next to the stations. The stations are there to help keep it clean
and not to take your animal to and leave the mess on the ground for me to pick
up.
Be helpful and respectful and responsible. Thanks!

CORDOVA WAY INTERSECTION
For the third time, the City has rejected our request for a 4-way stop at the intersection of Cordova and Anastasia. The amount of traffic and other considerations do not meet the city’s standards, and we are advised that unwarranted 4-ways can result in aggressive driving. It would appear that we have done all we can do. Slow down and look both ways….
GAS PLANT DEVELOPMENT
The city council recently voted 6-2 to pause moving forward until there is a clear plan that benefits the residents and city of St Petersburg. There is some controversy because it has been reported that Mayor Welch is going to proceed with the appointment of a developer before that plan is in place. The Association believes the citizens of the city should have an opportunity to voice their opinion about this. If you agree that he should follow the Council’s vote and complete the planning framework before selecting a developer, add your name: https://homerunsmatter.com/plan-first-mayor/

There is a Go Fund Me for them -- LECA is going to contribute $100. Go here if you want to help: https://www.gofundme.com/f/rebuilding-alyssa-and-brads-home-after-the-fire We attach again the photo of Jinx, the cat we are quite certain is still near the house -- this is the 4900 block of Columbus Way So.

Lawn and garden chemicals
Mercury-containing devices
Paint products
Pool/spa products

SEVERE DROUGHT
The newspaper today advises that we are in a more severe drought than we have seen in the last 50 years. Tampa Bay Water reports that we are approaching a “Stage 3 extreme regional supply” and the 3 driest month of the year. Please be extremely stingy with your use of water and do not do any new plantings until the summer rains. We are asked to abide by the once-a-week watering and to limit showers to 5 minutes!
TASCO TEEN RESOURCE FAIR
Also tomorrow, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., is the annual fair to help teens prepare for the next step -- education, career readiness, etc. J.W. Cate Recreation Center, 5801 22nd Ave N. This is a free event designed to connect teens with valuable information, tools, and opportunities to support their future success.

OPENING AT THE WERK
A new show opens tonight, from 5-9 p.m., at The Werk, 2210 First Ave South. Matt Faulhaber writes: “Spring is right around the corner and our 3rd annual Rite of Spring show is heating up quickly. This year, in lieu of flowers, 29 local artists submitted works voicing their concerns over the wholly unjust treatment of not only undocumented people but our fellow US citizens. Due process is a Constitutional Right according to the 5th Amendment. So we hope you will join these patriotic artists, on Friday March 6th, in the exercise of their 1st Amendment rights.”
RESPONDING TO THE BULLETIN
There appears to be some confusion about this. When I write “respond to me” or “let me know,” I am asking for you to get back to jelli...@gmail.com. SOLICITATION
We continue to receive complaints about solicitors not obeying the “No” signs at our homes. Once again, if you missed it, the city did pass a law making it illegal to ring or knock at a home with such a sign but failed and refused to tell people with permits about the law. The reason people ring your doorbell when you have a sign, besides the fact they hope you don’t mean it, is that they don’t know it’s against the law, and until we can convince someone at the city to fix this, the problem will continue. Despite requests from both a city council member and the office of Neighborhood Affairs, the administrative arm of the PD, which issues the permits, has refused to provide solicitors with any information about the law. If you would like to express your opinion about this, email the Assistant Chief for Administration at the PD, David....@stpete.org. You might want to cc ma...@stpete.org.
Efforts to deal with Verizon/Frontier, whose sales people are now trying to find customers for the fiber optics they just installed here, went nowhere. Six phone calls and nearly an hour on the phone failed to locate anyone who knew where to send the call or what to do about the problem. A complaint to the Better Business Bureau did produce a phone call from Frontier’s executive office during which the very argumentative woman pretty much said that if she couldn’t verify that we have the ordinance, her people would continue to ring doorbells where there are signs! She is to call me back with a decision but I don’t expect any cooperation.
You might want to think twice about doing business with such a disrespectful company.
WATER CONSERVATION
While we’re communicating with the city, here’s another area of concern. Last week we had a water main break mid-day on Saturday. The homeowner at the site called the city’s water emergency line but because there were several breaks (we seem to have them regularly), no one was able to get to the site until Monday. Over the weekend, thousands of gallons of water poured into the street, always wasteful but particularly unfortunate during an “extreme drought.”. The question we ask is, Why doesn’t the city have a contract with an outside company to step in when this happens?

MORE ON SOLICITATION
We have been asked to provide the city ordinance so that those of you plagued by solicitors can print it out or quote it, post it, whatever, to discourage the violators. The ordinance is 17-160(3) and (4) and reads as follows:
Sec. 17-160. - Prohibited acts.
It shall be unlawful for any solicitor, canvasser or peddler to engage in any of the following prohibited acts:
(3) Ring the bell, knock on the door, or otherwise attempt to gain admittance, for the purpose of peddling or soliciting, at any residence, dwelling or apartment at which a sign bearing the words "No Peddlers or Solicitors," or words of similar import indicating that such persons are not wanted on said premises, is painted, affixed or otherwise exposed to public view.
(4)
Distribute, deposit, place, throw, scatter, or cast or cause the distribution, placing, throwing, scattering or casting of any handbill at any residence, dwelling or apartment at which a sign bearing the words "No Peddlers or Solicitors," or words of similar import indicating that such persons are not wanted on said premises, is painted, affixed or otherwise exposed to public view.
Among other reasons we asked for this is that stuff piled up at the door and in the driveway of snowbirds is a signal to burglars that no one is home.
Probably the only way we will know if Frontier has opted to obey our law is if the complaints stop coming. The Frontier representative’s promise to get back to me on their policy after she confirmed that this ordinance exists (!) never happened but her response seemed to be that they do not intend to honor our NO signs.

UPDATE ON WATERING RESTRICTIONS
Tighter restrictions have been imposed as the extreme drought continues. Hours are now 12:01 a.m. to 4 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Properties smaller than one acre may water only once a day, pressure washing ahead of painting has been banned, and car washing is allowed only on lawn watering days. These restrictions are in effect until July 1. (At this writing it does not appear that the county’s website has been updated with these new rules.)
MORE APARTMENTS
We have been informed that Volante, the retirement facility at 3600 34th St S, which we old-timers remember used to be a Howard Johnson hotel, has been sold and is going to be replaced by yet another apartment building. This will be affordable housing, five stories with 174 units. We do not dispute the need for affordable housing, but when we worked to create the Skyway Marina District, we did not envision it as the apartment capital of the city. The strain on the infrastructure is already severe. If you feel that this end of the city has its share of apartments, you should consider emailing ma...@stpete.org to express your opinion. It is probably already too late for the Volante, but perhaps we should start letting the city know it’s time for the north side of town to accept its share of affordable housing.
FRONTIER UPDATE
We heard back from Frontier. Bottom line is that the issue has been escalated to ensure that whoever is in charge of the sales force is advised that we are serious about our NO SOLICITATION signs. If you have a sign and Frontier rings or knocks at your door, let me know so I can pass it back to our contact. Just please be certain it’s Frontier.
VARIANCE REQUESTED
RJ Myers, at 2900 Alberca, is applying to the city for a variance allowing him to install a swimming pool next to his house. The house is on a corner and there is no room for a pool in the back but there is room on one side -- the pool will have a privacy fence so no one will even know it’s there. The variance request is too large to attach here but if you want more information, you can contact RJ at rjmy...@gmail.com.
SAVE THE DATES
Here are important dates for upcoming events:
April 18th -- neighborhood yard sale
April 19th -- 31st Street clean-up
April 22nd -- quarterly Association meeting
April 25 -- annual neighborhood cleanup
Details for all of these will be posted as they approach.
GUN RANGE JITTERS
Many of you will remember the struggle we had back in 2015 to shut down a proposed gun range on Granada Circle. If you want to see what happens when there is in fact no solution, check out the Times story from March 22nd about a neighborhood near Tampa. If you can’t access the story, the important point is that we were saved by the law prohibiting gun use where the population density is one or more houses per acre. The Hillsborough property is 7 acres. The gun fire is loud and frequent, and the homeowner won’t even talk with his neighbors. It’s a horror story that will make you appreciate the firm stand our mayor at the time took to keep us safe.

I was at the helm of this ship for almost 20 years; Leonard is 3+ months “on the job.” Patience, please.

PROPOSED PARTNERSHIP
We have been in discussions with Boley Centers for several weeks regarding the possibility of assisting with a new project directed to helping the homeless. The proposal is for a facility at this end of town with showers and washing machines, a permanent one, not on wheels. It’s all well and good to be able to get clean but then putting on clean clothes would be even better! A local foundation has agreed to contribute. Lakewood’s participation would be multi-faceted, involving both cash donations and supplies such as underwear, towels, etc., out of the Lakewood Cares fund. We are hoping to use the Council of Neighborhood Associations to encourage other neighborhoods to join us. This proposal, with more details, will be up for discussion at the April 22nd meeting.

DOGS AND THE GOLF COURSE
Just a reminder, since it’s been a while, that in addition to all the other reasons to keep your dog away from the golf course, a dog walked even on the edge of the course is stepping on pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals that have been shown to shorten a dog’s life. While there is dispute about this, and there are in fact dog friendly golf courses, you might want to consider keeping to the street and not letting your dog’s feet come in contact with the grass along the course.
NEIGHBORHOOD NUISANCE
At least one vehicle -- a red Tahoe -- has been making regular appearances at the corner of Fairway and Anastasia to fish in the pond on the golf course. This is a no-no. They have been asked to leave on numerous occasions but keep coming back. Usual time is very early morning but they have also been seen near sundown. If you see them, please call the non-emergency number -- 893-7780 -- and ask the PD to come out and drive them off. This is a low priority call but the PD will do their best to get here. You are free of course to suggest directly to these folks that they are not allowed to fish in that pond but expect the woman to give you a lesson in four-letter vocabulary. Our Community Service Officer is on this. (And no, they don’t live here.)

MARK YOUR CALENDAR
May 2nd, Lakewood Bike Bus Group Ride. Details to follow. The ride will be to the Gulfport Library and back and will last from 9:30 a.m. to about 1:30. There will be a sign-up sheet.
FISHING IN COUNTRY CLUB POND
For all of you who have been helping to deal with the persistent man in the red truck and his foul-mouthed partner who keep returning to fish at Anastasia and Fairway, the Country Club is going to put up NO FISHING and NO TRESPASSING signs at that corner. The reason this hasn’t been done is that we learned years ago that signs are red flags to these trespassers -- they destroy them. But without them, the police are not really able to tell the offenders to go away. We will also continue to work with our CSO and the PD responders so we are all on the same page.
GRANT OPPORTUNITY

ST. ANTHONY’S TRIATHLON
As most of you know, this annual marathon brings its bicycle portion through Lakewood. The PD will begin closing off intersections very early on Sunday morning so that getting out onto MLK may take a while. ANNUAL SWIMMING LESSON PROGRAM
It’s time for our annual contribution to the city’s program to teach kids how to swim. Our state leads the nation in child drownings -- last year we set a new record of 112. The city has a program to provide reduced-cost lessons to underprivileged kids but it’s never enough. The Association will kick off the ‘pot’ with $500 and we ask our membership to contribute whatever they can, with the hope of raising at least $2000-$3000. The 2-week course is $13.65 for qualifying kids (on the free lunch program), but if you have 3 kids, that’s $40 you probably can’t spare, especially now with the price of gas and food ascending daily! School gets out on May 28th, and the lessons start immediately.
So please, either use the Paypal link on the website (www.lakewoodstpete.com and go to the Donations link under About Us) or send a check payable to LECA at PO Box 15903, St Pete 33733 and put “swim” in the memo line. Every little bit helps. And thanks!
(As of 2025 we have paid for lessons for 1750 kids!)

Many of you have contributed generously to this annual program to help save kids from drowning. As reported earlier this month, the state hit a new record in 2025 with 112 children lost. The drive will continue to the end of next week, so please chip in. Send a check payable to LECA with ”swim” in the memo line, or use the Donations link to Paypal on the website under About Us.
URBAN AGRICULTURE PROGRAM
The City’s Office of Sustainability and Resilience is developing a Community Urban Agriculture Program aimed at supporting the creation of new food forests and enhancing existing permitted community gardens throughout the city. To help shape the program, the City is hosting informational sessions to gather public input and better understand community priorities and the needs of local urban agriculture operations. Tuesday, May 26th, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the St. Pete Youth Farm, 1664 12th Street S.
GAS PLANT DISTRICT
In case you missed it, former Mayor Rick Baker posted a lengthy article in the Times with his proposal for use of this site. I had a lengthy chat with him about it about a year ago. Of all the suggestions for use of this land, this one makes the best sense to me.
It echoes what a lot of us wanted to see done with the Ceridian property before the city, despite our protests, allowed the development of another huge apartment complex.
An again in case you missed it, the city just voted to allow yet another apartment house to be built on lower 34th Street, this time where the State Farm ”cop college” now stands.
AND NOW FOR SOME HUMOR
www.hoabulletinboard.com/hoa/lespfl/about_hoa
This site has a lengthy article about our “homeowners association,” including our community center, neighborhood swimming pool, tennis courts, $200 fees, a link to a non-existent website, and a great deal of other incorrect information. We have no idea where this came from and have attempted, without success, to reach site management about it. The link to post a correction does not work. If anyone has any knowledge of this work of fiction, or a suggestion about how to get rid of it, please let me know.
RECYCLE
This is not a recycle week. Because of the holiday, Monday garbage pick-up will be on Tuesday.
CRIME WATCH SIGNS
The replacement order for our crime watch signs has come in so if you are waiting to replace your lost or damaged sign, you can request one at lecasec...@gmail.com. Be sure to specify whether you need an H frame.

Come and mingle with the artists.” 5-9 p.m., 2210 First Avenue South. Best parking is in the rear.
VOTING STATUS
There have been changes to the laws regarding voting in this state so to be sure your information is current, you can go to www.votepinellas.gov and request a status check. It’s fast and easy and will tell you, among other things, whether you are registered to vote by mail, since that now has to be updated after each general election.

ST PETE NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSLETTER
The city’s Neighborhood Relations department now has a monthly newsletter, Neighborhood Nexus. The June issue contained this item:
LAKEWOOD ESTATES LEVERAGES CITY RESOURCES FOR COMMUNITY CLEAN UP!
The Lakewood Estates Civic Association hosted a series of spring-cleaning events to help beautify the neighborhood and support residents. The association organized a neighborhood yard sale and partnered with Keep Pinellas Beautiful and the Skyway Marina District to conduct a corridor cleanup along 31st Street South, even inviting St. Petersburg Police Department's Officer Maybell in on the fun.
The following weekend, the association continued its cleanup efforts by helping residents dispose of unwanted items remaining after the yard sale. Through partnerships with Goodwill and the City of St. Pete’s Sanitation Department, residents were able to donate reusable items and utilize roll-off dumpsters for disposal. To make the event even more convenient, a document shredding truck was also available, creating a one-stop cleanup opportunity for the community.
Of course, we have been doing this for years but it’s nice that the city has noticed. Perhaps this will inspire other neighborhoods.
