On April 28, 2020, Netflix renewed the series for a second season.[5] However, on November 26, 2020, it was reported that Netflix had cancelled the series because of the production challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.[6]
A seasoned field operative of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and daughter of Safiya Sono (Lady Skollie), a deceased South African anti-apartheid revolutionary leader and freedom fighter. As a young orphan, Queen struggled to comprehend the mystery surrounding her mother's assassination case. Years later, she is recruited by the SOG, a South African intelligence agency. Determined to find the answers she seeks, she continues to investigate her family's past and uncover the identity of the true culprit responsible for her mother's death.
On December 10, 2018, it was announced that Netflix had given the production a series order for a six-episode first season.[2][9]The series is created by Kagiso Lediga who is credited as an executive producer alongside Tamsin Andersson.[9][10][11][12][13] Lediga and Tebogo Malope directed the entirety of the first season.[2] Diprente Films was involved in the production of the series.[9] The first season was released on February 28, 2020.[1][14] On April 28, 2020, the series was renewed by Netflix for a second season.[5] It was reported on November 26, 2020 that the show had been cancelled, the complications of the pandemic having led to cost increases and difficulty scheduling production.[6][15]
Principal photography for the first season was originally scheduled to commence in April 2019.[19] Filming for the first season took place on location in Johannesburg, South Africa, Lagos, Nigeria; Kenya and Zanzibar, Tanzania from June 2019 to August 2019.[2][20][21]
The first season received positive reviews upon its release. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 91% approval rating with an average rating of 7/10 based on 11 reviews. The website's critical consensus reads, "Queen Sono's twisty, taut thrills are matched with epic action sequences and soapy delights, making Netflix's first South African series a smashing good time."[24] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the first season a score of 70 out of 100 based on 5 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[25]
Netflix's Queen Sono season 1 concludes with a lot of loose endings and unanswered questions. It stars Pearl Thusi as Queen Sono, who is a member of an off-the-radar section of the South African secret service called the Special Operations Group (SOG). The finale more or less ends up back where the series started, and fans are left wondering what the rebel group Watu Wema's next movie will be.
That isn't the only lingering mystery left by Queen Sono season 1's ending. The shadow of Queen's mother, Safiya Sono, covers pretty much every chapter and the identity of her killer is still unknown. Supreme Solutions is also facing a power limbo, which leaves views wondering if they will hold actual power, or if the SOG will be able to stop them in their tracks.
Queen Sono is the first African original Netflix series, and its story is compelling from minute zero. The series deals with subjects like corrupt politicians, complex family histories, secret missions and foreigners' interests in the continent. At the center of it all is Queen Sono herself - and season 1's ending sets her up with a path to revenge.
We finally see Queen coming to terms with who she is and where she comes from at the end of Queen Sono season 1, and it appears she finally starts to process it all. The only familial relationship she seemed to have is now gone, and she decides that she's had enough. At Zana's grave, Queen reveals her new objective: to find who did this to her and make them pay. The conversation implies Queen will be back to bleed them dry, just as they have been bleeding her country dry for so long. She will make her people understand that they are free and must act for their own benefit without intermediariesy.
Dorothy Ghettuba, who leads African originals at Netflix, said: The first season of Queen Sono marked the beginning of our journey to introduce the world to exciting stories that are made in Africa. It was an unprecedented representation of a strong female black lead in African television.
I usually shy away from series based in other countries. But this was actually a good show. The cast was good, and the seamless language transition and subtitles was very east to follow. Lead actress was casted well and her role and character background story was interesting and intriguing. I really could see the storyline just starting to be unfolded. All in all disappointed there will be no second season
So disappointed to hear this show was canceled. I was so looking forward to season 2. One of the best Netflix originals I watch thus far. Surely hope Netflix will bring it back after the pandemic is over.
The South African crime series made headlines when the first season released earlier in 2020 (February 28th to be exact) because it was the first full Netflix Original series from the continent. Created by Kagiso Lediga, the series followed a secret agent who deals with criminal operations. It was a slick production and although Netflix gave the swift renewals, no viewing statistics were revealed.
The second season was supposed to resolve a number of cliffhangers and story arcs which were left unfinished from season 1 including Queen looking for the truth surrounding her past and quest for revenge.
It follows a string of titles that were either looking to come back for another season or were initially renewed but reversed. Notable titles that fall into the latter category include The Society season 2 and perhaps most notably, GLOW season 4.

In the finale of Season 1, Queen learns that her mother was murdered due to a SOG plot, after the government-baked spy agency considered her as irrelevant following the election of Nelson Mandela in 1994.

Usually, when a series is renewed, fans can breathe a sigh of relief that their favorites title is safe for another season. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has changed this as a number of networks have recently reversed their past renewals and canceled fairly successful shows. From first-season Netflix hits to long-adored Comedy Central staples, it seems that no show is entirely safe.
Full of intrigue and mysteries, the series ends abruptly and lets us anticipate subsequent events. Queen Sono leaves many unresolved issues and arguments between the characters, clearly intending for them to be developed in the second season. Queen still has mysteries left to solve, and is also left to deal with events that make her desperate but even more revengeful. A new character is introduced right at the end, and that leaves us wondering about how their relationship with Queen will evolve. By telling us a story about racial inequality, white privilege and political instability, Queen Sono demonstrates that our modern society has flaws to fix and wars to end.

The first season provided a lot of avenues for a follow-up season, so fans were already speculating that Queen Sono's saga would have a continuation. Fans were ecstatic to find out that their speculations were indeed true. Sadly, on November 26, 2020, Netflix had to take back its decision due to the pandemic. The production challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic forced the streamer to pull the plug on the series.
The first season of Queen Sono arrived on Netflix on April 28, 2020. After its initial renewal, the second season was set to begin filming in late 2020. Sadly, initial plans did not push through due to the Coronavirus pandemic. As of this update, there are no reports that Netflix is planning to pick up Queen Sono again. Hence, don't expect to see Queen Sono season 2 anymore.

Highly skilled in combat and with surpassing intelligence, Queen set out to fight evil crime groups who wish to terrorize South Africa. But behind this strong facade is a child deeply engrossed in trauma after witnessing her mother's assassination. The first season only has six episodes, not to mention a cliffhanging ending deducing fans to believe that the second season will be more intense. If only the show got renewed, we were expecting to see the feud between Queen and Ekaterina grow deeper. Although Queen was able to stop Ekaterina from taking over South Africa, the Russian heiress to a crime family is determined to come back.
