A race of demonic extraterrestrials from a rogue planet known as the Makyo Star. Their power scalings have a fairly wide range, with the first crew of Makyans being on par with Son Goku and Piccolo at the time when both warriors were still weaker than Raditz, but when the Makyo Star comes into close enough proximity to Earth the Spice Boys were at least as powerful as the Ginyu Force. The most prominent member is Garlic Jr. Always Chaotic Evil: They're a race of fiends who want to conquer Earth and pervert it to their liking. Garlic was disqualified from the role of Kami simply because this was his sole ambition rather than to oversee Earth's progress. Body Horror: All Makyans have the ability to pump up their muscles. Some get a minor increase, but Garlic Jr. can go from the size of a toddler to 7 feet tall. A few Makyans even demonstrate the ability to hide weapons in their flesh, which can be torn out without causing any harm to themselves. Edible Theme Naming: Garlic Jr. and his minions are all named after spices/condiments. Fangs Are Evil: All of them have pointed teeth. Green and Mean: The majority have skintones that come in varying shades of green and they're incredibly malicious. Our Demons Are Different: They're clearly intended to be purer demonic counterparts to Demon King Piccolo's offspring and even Emperor Pilaf's minions, with their leader and his father before him being demon counterparts of Kami, Piccolo (both Daimao and Jr.), and in the former case Pilaf himself. Even when the anime's filler arc reveals their outer space origin, mirroring the canon material's revelations about Kami and Piccolo, it does its best to maintain the demonic motif. Their homeworld is an ominous evil red rogue planet even called the Makyo Star (Makyo-sei), which roughly translates to "Demon world" according to Japanese Buddhism. It's almost as though Namek itself had an Evil Counterpart. Pointy Ears: All of them. It appears to be a Makyan trait (aside from Mustard of the Spice Boys). Space Orcs: Makyans are a savage alien race that resemble goblins. Spikes of Villainy: They have sharp points on their armor, gauntlets, and skins. Ginger and Nicky's turn out to be scimitars housed in their forearms and legs respectively. Super Mode: Makyans can bulk up into larger, more muscular versions of themselves, though they also rely on spoken words related to their names that Garlic does not seem to require. Underwear of Power: With the exceptions of Garlic and Salt, most Makyans tend to leave their legs exposed.
Nicky, Ginger & Sansho are Garlic Jr.'s right-hand men in the film Dead Zone. Nicky is a green human-like Makyan. He has white hair and wears a white cloak. Ginger is a goblin-like Makyan wearing red armor. Sansho is a bulky, black lobster-like Makyan. The evil warriors kidnapped Gohan and brought the Half-Saiyan boy back to Garlic Jr.'s fortress in the sky. Goku came and beat up the three Makyan warriors, despite powering up to their limit. Later, Piccolo and Krillin arrived. Piccolo beat up Sansho and blasted him in half with a Ki Blast. Nicky and Ginger attacked Goku again, but they were both killed by a Kamehameha. The three beasts are later seen escaping from Hell in the film Fusion Reborn. Alien Blood: Nicky's blood is colored blue, shown when he pulls out a sword from his leg. Anime Hair: Nicky's white hair sticks up but otherwise doesn't resemble any conventional style. Badly Battered Babysitter: Nicky was in charge of watching Gohan while the young Saiyan was being kept prisoner. It... didn't end up well for him. Battle Cry: Each of them has a unique battle cry that changes them into their bulkier forms. Big Guy Fatality Syndrome: Sansho is the largest and most muscular, so naturally he is the first to die. Big Guy, Little Guy: Sansho and Nicky are the big guys while Ginger is the little guy and serves as Garlic's dragon. The Brute: Sansho doesn't appear to have any Hidden Weapons like his fellow servants, so he mainly sticks to his fists. It does little to aid him when he's forced to battle Piccolo mono e mono. Bullying a Dragon: Ganging up on Piccolo semed like a smart idea at the time, but leaving him alive and antagonizing the guy who is demonstratably stronger than Piccolo was a massive blunder. The result is Goku and Piccolo forming an uneasy alliance so they could beat the trio together. Butt-Monkey: Nicky is assigned to keep an eye on Gohan while the other two collect the remaining dragon balls. He gets pounced by the boy while stopping for a bite and then has to deal with the antics of a four-year-old drunk after the boy eats an apple not meant for kids. His death also has this effect when he gets knocked into a tower and gets vaporized alongside Ginger just as he starts to come to. By The Power Of Gray Skull: "Shogoyaki (Grilled Pork)!" for Ginger, "Nodoame (Rice Jelly)!" for Nicky, and "Unaju (Eel Rice)!" for Sansho. The Ocean Group dub renders them as "Gingerbread!", "Tutti-frutti!", and "Pepperoni!" respectfully. In Funimation's dub, they kept "Gingerbread" and "Tutti-frutti" but changed Sansho's phrase to "Cheese!". The Cameo: All three of them appear in Fusion Reborn as a part of Frieza's army. Ginger is shown rising with Burter, Sansho appears flying with Salza towards Gohan, and Nicky can be spotted running away with the other villains after Frieza has been killed. Combined Energy Attack: Nicky, Ginger & Sansho can fire Energy Waves at the opponent. Used against Piccolo, which hit him, and later against Goku, (Minus Ginger, he was knocked out by Goku) but it was deflected by Krillin. The Comically Serious: Ginger is the most straightlaced but is just as dumbfounded by Gohan's wimpiness as his colleagues are and snickers with them. Creepy High-Pitched Voice: Nicky when he decides to get threatening lets out terrible screeches. Dead-Hand Shot: After he and Nicky are killed by Goku's Kamehameha, we see Ginger's twitching hand sticking up from the rubble before falling limp. Dual Wielding: Ginger can summon two katanas for himself by pulling them. Out of his skin. Nicky only has one. Dumb Muscle: Sansho is the only one to repeat Goku's "Return my Gohan!" line a second time thinking that it came from his fellow Makyans. Elite Mooks: They rank above the average Makyans and presumably the later Spice Boys as well since they appear first. Even Evil Has Standards: Played for Laughs. They are certainly undyingly loyal to Garlic Jr., but early in the movie, they appear quite fearful of his psychotic laughter after he voices his plans to plunge the Earth into darkness and hatred. Evil Sounds Deep: Sansho has the lowest octaves of the three. Evil Sounds Raspy: Ginger and Sansho in all versions. Nicky as well in the Funimation dub. Facepalm: Nicky once he sees Gohan succumb to the alcohol-ridden fruit he ate. Gender-Blender Name: Ginger, Nicky (or Nikki), and Sansho are primarily female names, not ones you'd associate with quirky and evil demons like these guys. Gratuitous English: Nicky when Gohan gets drunk from an apple (in the Japanese language):"Aw, geez!" Hidden Weapons: Ginger keeps dual-wielding scimitars in his forearms while Nicky keeps his own weapon inside his right leg...which he has to tear out of it. Hot Blooded Sideburns: Sansho has the flowing type colored red-purple. Otherwise, he is bald. In the Hood: Ginger makes his formal debut in front of Chi-Chi with his hood up, adding to his unsettling aura, after attacking the Ox-King. Light Is Not Good: Nicky wears white primarily and is evil. Names to Run Away from Really Fast: Nicky's name, a pun on cinnamon, may also reference Satan's nickname "Little Nicky". Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: All they had to do was take the four-star ball off of Gohan's hat and leave him. Instead, they kidnap him too and get the attention of his angry dad, which lets him catch on to Garlic Jr.'s plan. Doubly so after Garlic opens the Dead Zone and sets off Gohan which causes his first imprisonment within the titular void. Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: The Garlic Jr. Saga retroactively makes them from an alien race, native to the Makyo Star, in addition to being demons. No Brows: None of them have eyebrows. Oh, Crap!: They're all prone to this, especially Nicky. The latter himself gets a hilarious one upon realizing that Ginger is being blasted straight towards him. Neither of them survives. Sansho realizes quickly how screwed he is against Piccolo when forced to fight one-on-one. One-Winged Angel: They all bulk up and increase their powers by shouting weird things related to their names. Pity the Kidnapper: Nicky is saddled with looking after Gohan while the other two collect the last two dragon balls. Long story short, Gohan gets drunk from a fruit and the hapless Nicky spends a minute and a half chasing a tipsy child around the castle trying to get the kid under control. It's only after Gohan passes out on Garlic's throne that the Makyan can collect him. Screams Like a Little Girl: Nicky in the original Japanese after he sees Gohan about to eat the apple. Sinister Scimitar: Played straight by Nicky and Ginger: the swords they pull out of their limbs are curved enough to be considered scimitars, and they're evil. Stupid Evil: Them kidnapping Gohan instead of just taking his hat or better yet tearing off the dragon ball from his hat. Thanks to that, Goku is quick to pursue them and be in time to help thwart Garlic Jr.'s plot. Goku probably would have interfered anyway if just to reclaim the dragon ball (it being his grandfather's keepsake), but the Makyans still didn't do themselves any favors. Terrible Trio: The first of what would become a trend among DBZ hench-villains. This Is Gonna Suck: Nicky can only groan "Aw, geez!" after Gohan becomes inebriated. He has this reaction briefly just before he and Ginger are vaporized by a Kamehameha from Goku. Too Dumb to Live: Like Garlic Jr., they know about the life link between Piccolo and Kami but apparently didn't know that doing so would have rendered the dragon balls as worthless stones. Trademark Favorite Food: Nicky is shown to like fruit, particularly apples. He laments in the Funimation dub that watching Gohan almost made him miss his lunch...before Gohan smacks into his back. Undying Loyalty: Despite their slight fear of him, all three of them don't hesitate to cheer Garlic Jr. on when he attains immortality. Villainous Glutton: Nicky plops three apples into his mouth at once while retrieving the four-star ball and later laments almost missing his lunch when having to babysit Gohan. Wolf Pack Boss: The three of them prefer attacking in a group in order to quickly overwhelm their foes and finish them off. Piccolo realizes this from his initial beatdown by them and quickly separates Sansho from the other two, easily killing the latter without much fuss. Conversely, Goku has a considerably more difficult time tackling Ginger and Nicky one-on-two and has to knock the latter away so he can focus on the former before he can get them both in one shot. Worst. Whatever. Ever!: Nicky in the Funimation dub calls Gohan "the worst child ever" after chasing the freshly-intoxicated boy all around the castle. Yellow Eyes of Sneakiness: Nicky and Sansho have the sclera, though the former's are a paler shade. You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: They are all taken aback at first when they see that the son of Son Goku, the world's strongest man, is seemingly nothing but a simpering crybaby. You Monster!: Sansho screams this at Piccolo after he's smashed through several pillars and just before the Namekian offs him.
