Hi everyone,

The first six chapters of "Head First Programming", the book we will be using for this group, are ready for us. This book has not yet been released; O'Reilly is kindly giving us advanced access to it free of charge. For this reason, I'd be very happy to hear all feedback on it, good and bad.

And of course, I ask that you not redistribute or post these PDFs anywhere, nor share the associated link.

Download a .zip file of the chapters here:
ftp://ftp.oreilly.com/outgoing/HFProg.zip

I highly recommend taking the time to read pages 20-27 of the introduction to the book (ch00). Head First books are formatted a bit differently from your standard technical manual, and understanding why certain choices were made will help you get the most out of the book. (As I mentioned, this book is not yet final, so you'll have to forgive the missing headings/page numbers in the first part of the introduction; I will include a final version of it with the next batch of chapters.)

Looking forward to getting started tonight!

Julie

Hey guys,

I am pretty excited about this group and I am looking forward to it. Being an out of stater and unable to make tonight's meeting, will be broadcasting via Ustream at all?

I can't make it either (out of the country) but will follow along and hopefully catch up via ustream.

Charlie, thanks for starting/arranging this and thanks to Julie for the O'Reilly stash!

Cheers,
Jed

Julie - Thanks so much for sharing this. I'll start a feedback document as I'm going through it.

One thing that comes to mind - when I first became interested in coding, I was told you either have it in you or you don't. It depends on your analytical skills, logical analysis, etc. I'm sure we can each gauge our own skillset but I thought I'd throw that out there for everyone to consider. I found a blog post that talks a little about it as well that I wanted to share. Check it out here - http://blogs.computerworld.com/node/4283.

I live in Philadelphia so broadcasting via Ustream sounds great. I'm sorry I missed tonights stream but will definitely catch them in the future. Do we have a schedule so I can add the sessions to my calendar? I go up to NYC every now and then so I may be able to catch it in person once or twice.

Thanks for putting this together. I'm really looking forward to it! I tried to learn PHP on my own but I didn't have the discipline to stick through it. This type of group is exactly what I wish I had.

Best,

Yasmine

I don't think so... but we'll be on chat.
