We are beginning discussions with a couple of companies who may be
able to help us provide the sound files we desperately need. To be
honest, they're dragging their feet, and will doubtless try to charge
users a lot of money to access their services.

So... my question is this... can you think of a better way?

Have you looked into speech engines? If you license a multi-language
engine you could generate all the audio files you want. Speech engines
are getting better and better, and for single word generation the
audio accuracy is very high, even with languages like Chinese or
Arabic. If you're looking to do it on the cheap, you could even use
Microsoft's Vista engine (SAPI 5.3) with any number of voices.

Funnily enough, we've just (as in about 10 minutes ago) had a call
back from a company who have a speech emulator translator. We've been
trying to get hold of them for ages! Hopefully we will have some good
news about sound very soon.

We have sound!!! Well, at least we have worked out a way of providing
a virtual model who can read out words in a limited number of
languages.
Have a look at the audio demo on the web site.
