As we pass the sixth (yes, you read that right) anniversary of the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re just starting to see the effect on children's learning. There’s the impact to those who were born at the onslaught of change, as well as to those who were already in school and weathered the (virtual) storm

New studies show that the older students were during the 2019-2020 school year, the worse their academic trajectory. That tracks with other data showcasing historic drops in math and reading scores in 12th grade students. Younger students fared better, although they still performed below their 2019 levels. Beyond test scores, kids are struggling with basic tasks, ranging from following class instructions to tying their own shoes, preschool teachers say.

Amidst these aftereffects, parents have new concerns. Some are debating the merits of holding back their children from kindergarten, a practice known as redshirting. (EdSurge has more on that below). Schools may be more reliant on screens than ever, even as many parents show growing distrust of screen use. On the flip side, virtual schools are becoming a preferred modality for some students and teachers

The pandemic may be over, but we are clearly at the start of managing its aftermath.

📈 STORY IN A STAT

2 percent

The share of consumer technology in the classroom that is aligned with evidence standards in federal law, according to a recent report by Instructure. That share climbs to 40 percent for “purpose-built edtech” tools, but within that category, the tools vary widely for which level of evidence they meet, the report notes. This report comes when there’s significant backlash from students, parents and lawmakers against technology in education classrooms.
