6 October | Girudala wins 2010 Close the Gap health award
Girudala Community Health Cooperative has won ANTaR Queensland’s Close the Gap Health Award for 2010. ANTaR Queensland extends congratulations to everyone involved at Girudala for their success in providing holistic community health care to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in and around Bowen. The Premier, Anna Bligh, presented the cooperative with the award at a special ceremony held in the Parliamentary Annex of the Queensland Parliament on 6 October. Girudala CEO Michelle Hook said the coop had been “striving to deliver services at the grassroots” for three decades. She outlined plans for future ventures, including one to secure training and jobs for Bowen’s young people.
Find out more about Girudala’s work, including its Tucker Box Program, Mums and Bubs Program, and Homework Program at <www.girudala.com.au>.
This is the fourth year the Close the Gap Health Award has been run.
The previous winners are Dr Noel Hayman (2007), the Charleville and Western Areas Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Corporation for Health (2008) and Goori House Men’s Support Service (2009).
29 September | The first Aboriginal lower house MP in the federal parliament, Ken Wyatt, gives his maiden speech
In a very moving maiden speech in the first session of the 43rd parliament, Mr Wyatt referred to the experience of his mother and other family members as stolen children and the impact this had on them and on his extended family.
He said: ‘I hope that all governments continue to embrace new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed, where enduring approaches need to change and where the future we all influence is based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the agencies of government need to jettison the old mindsets that embody Indigenous Australians as passive recipients of government programs and services, and to instead truly regard people as equals and allow them to be equal partners in developing their solutions. Governments must allow information to be shared so that an informed consent decision-making process is enabled. If change is to occur and become embedded and sustained then all must be equal and active partners in all facets of planning, implementation and accountability, and I would equally apply this to all Australians that we represent.”
