Yes, it makes sense that one may make contacts who will hire you for your expertise in consultancy and project work after you publish everything you have created as open educational resoures.

 

Bt in my husband's case, he is not interested in spending time away from his research to be a consultant or work on other projects. It would presumably be so time consuing that it probably would kill his research. On the other hand, he publishes everything that he researches at arXiv.org . 

 

I have a question about arXiv.org .  Are all the documents there open educational resources by default? I read the FAQs and did not find any nformation as to copyright licensing.

 

Would it be legal to post atricles from arXiv.org to a public wiki or moodle to use as course content for a teacher`s own course that he is offering?

I think that the community is always more informed than the
individual.  The old tale of three blind men and the elephant!  We are
all victims of our own knowledge and having a forum where others can
broaden and adapt that knowledge is in my opinion a greater benefit to
the whole than "protecting" it from "ratbags" as Sandy so eloquently
put it!

As a professional educator I pay my bills by selling education to
others.  However, I also feel it is my responsibility to share my
knowledge with others for the benefit of the greater good.  These may
seem like opposing principles, but I have to weigh and balance what I
can give away and what to "package" for profit.  My cost based courses
are often more closed system, while my no-cost courses are often open
authored.  For me the difference has been based on personal investment
of time, energy and other resources (including money).  Depending on
the educator's perspective both may be beneficial.  From the student
perspective I think open authoring wins hands down.

Peer review is essential to quality in any open editing environment.

In my country (and in most other countries) content that is written by a
employee is copyright of the firm or school he is working for. (if written
in working time)
So you maybe you must ask for permission.

But IF he only links in a wiki to his work on this arxiv.org there is no
problem.
It is no need to write it in a wiki, it is somewhere else and you can link
to the writings..
