Today's tutorial was indeed thought provoking and intriguing.  Care must be taken that the work done through this means will not be stolen and probaably copyrighted.  Thus preventing the actual originators of the work from having free access to the work.

On the other hand, OER will help greatly in developing countries where cost of textbooks is very high and even inaccessible at times.  I also conduct classroom teaching and I do have thoughts on revamping the courses I teach.  Such a forum ,I think, would help to ensure that the task is pursued in an effective manner.  Online teaching may also serve to revitalise students' interest in learning.

Great post -- OER has the potential to make a significant difference in widening access to educational opportunities around the world.

On a point of clarity -- I should point out that the copyright of the majority of materials in WikiEducator actually belong to the original authors. However, the authors gift their knowledge using licenses which grant permissions for reusing, adapting and modifying the materials. Now that's smart.

So the majority of materials on WikiEducator actually belong to the creators -- and the Creative commons licensing we use provide permissions for reuse. Some users dedicate their contributions to the public domain which means the content is not owned or controlled by anyone.  Licensing and intellectual property is a compex topic.

For those interested in learning more about what we mean by free content -- you can take a look here:

Cheers
Wayne

Good morning all,
To me, if those who will re-use the materials will do so without
corrupting them then everyone is welcome to access them.
As has been rightly observed, this a great way of uplifting
educational standards in developing countries where the cost of
quality books is simply out of reach of the common man.
Being free to evryone to re use, educators will have materials they
can legally download and adapt to their own environments and have an
opportunity to contribute their own materials based on their own local
conditions. This will offer a very rich variety of materials and every
subject will now have materials created by people from different parts
of the world each creating his/hers based on their teaching/learning
environments.
What we need to look at is how to make sure students are guided to
make clear distinctions between different points of view on the same
topics and contradictory corruption.
I just hope materials will be created with an objective mind without
turning academic points of disagreements (which should be points of
discourse) into issues of one part claiming to be right and the the
others wrong or false.
The issue of Internet access in developing countries is also of
importance, many educators do not have computers (and many of those
who have do not have internet access) and many dont see internet
access as a necessity. Only going to a Public Internet Cafe once in
maybe a month.
Creation of OER materials and creating awareness about the availabilty
of OER materials and the opportunity that is there for us all is a
task we all have to take very seriously among our colleagues.

Some interesting points here...as always what ever the media wiki,
printed or otherwise, attribution and referecing should not be
undermined.

Content can be stolen in anyformat and therefore we should adhere to
the underlying principles or values of honesty.
