Hi Moms
So here we are with a brand new
Club ! Thanks to all the moms who could make it at such short notice to
MCA to finalise the schedule, rules, etc, and a Warm Welcome to all
newcomers !!
Bear with us on this looong message, we are trying to put everything down in black and white so there's no confusion later....
- Purpose : The purpose of Learning Souls is for the kids to participate in an activity that is informative and fun.
- Regularity
: Once a month, on a Saturday afternoon 3 - 5pm (with some exceptions in
December and March where we'll meet on weekdays - more on that later)
- Cost
: 3000/- per child, to be sent on or before the first meeting in
October. (Erstwhile bookclub moms, we will send you a separate message
since many of you have around 1600/- each left over from the bookclub)
- Hosting
: Moms will host in pairs, schedule being put up separately by Kirti. Hosting
involves arranging the entire activity including contacting the rest of
the club members, as well as providing simple refreshments.
- Funding
: The corpus money (3000/- x 16 kids) will move by rotation to the next
lot of hosts, who will use some to fund their activity (please note the
food each time will be sponsored by host moms, not taken from the club
fund). We have calculated 3000/- per child assuming that we will need an
average of Rs.500/- per kid per month (some will be more expensive and
some activities may be very cheap). The overnight camp in December will
obviously need to be paid for separately. If we run out later, we'll all
chip in fresh funds.
- Behaviour
: We intend to outsource i.e. use experts/professionals where-ever we
feel the kids will benefit - eg theatre workshop, cookery, science
experiments, etc - this implies a need for our kids to behave with
decorum, not disrupt the activity with loud disparaging remarks OR show
their boredom by being immersed in gadgets - ipod, bbm, etc. It is very
unlikely that every kid will enjoy every activity, since all have
different interests. But they do need to learn to respect differences.
After one warning regarding behaviour, next time the kid will have to
leave the club and forfeit the money.
- Attendance
: A lot of these activities will need a certain minimum attendance to
be confirmed to the experts/professionals. A lot of effort goes into any
one such activity, by the host moms as well as the experts. It is
important that we dont have last minute drop-outs. Also since the
schedule will be known from now itself, please keep it as a part of the kids
calendar, much as you would their exams, tournaments, et al. To instill
discipline and also to prevent logistical issues, any kid not attending
for any reason forfeits the money for that particular activity.
- Types
of activities : Some wonderful ideas were generated - here's some of
them just to give you a sense - cookery at Om Creations NGO, gardening,
life sciences skills including basic first aid, visit to Dharavi,
environmental awareness, movie review, creative writing, learning about
the economy/visit to stockmarket, science experiments with NGO Pratham,
visit to Nehru Science, Planetarium - and the big highlight : the
overnight camp with trekking and other outdoor activities in December.
Some of you have already decided what you are going to do, and that will
be mentioned on the schedule being put up soon. We just need to
co-ordinate with each other to ensure activities are different from each
other.
The first meeting is most probably on 13th
October, hosted by Kimaya and Mihika, and will be based on movie
reviewing. Details will be posted once hosts have figured out what to do
:)
