Max Muller, one of the earliest Sanskrit scholars in Europe, learnt Sanskrit without ever visiting India so he should be an inspiration to us learning Sanskrit in UK. He was described by Swami Vivekananda as a Rishi for his mammoth translation of Vedas in English. It is fashionable nowadays to condemn him for his insidious motives but the merit of his works remains undiminished. His grammar book can still be profitably read and is freely available at  http://archive.org/details/sanskritgrammarf00mluoft as the copyright has expired.
