Though this event was held earlier this year, it might be of interest
to some on this group...
Does Goa have the potential to become the future Excellence Hub in
Asia for learning & teaching Portuguese?
In the last few years the stature of Portuguese in the world has
evolved impressively due to the economic development and international
recognition of countries such as Angola and Brazil, that along with
Portugal has been promoting the initiatives of the CPLP (Community of
Portuguese spoken countries), the third intergovernmental community at
the global level formed with a base in cultural and linguistic ties to
give
the Portuguese language an international stature, making it an
official language in international organizations.
A historical brief of the teaching-learning process in Goa in
post-1961 period, particularly in the last 25 years will be presented.
With the Liberation of Goa in 1961 and the lack of diplomatic
relations between Portugal and India, Portuguese was for several years
maintained solely in familial context. The creation of the Department
of Portuguese, the only in the entire Indian subcontinent and one of
the rarest in the whole of Asia to offer the M.A. in Portuguese
Language and Culture, and the introduction of the Portuguese language
in the scholastic curriculum as an optional language, from standard
VIII has replaced Goa at the centre of Portuguese instruction-
learning in India. Thanks to the renewed diplomatic ties between
Portugal and India, several private Goan institutions have also
contributed to the promotion of the Portuguese language in the State
of Goa.
Goa is a tiny state of the Republic of India with unique conditions.
Historical, economic and cultural aspects make Goa, besides a
privileged touristic destination, a vibrant and dynamic multilingual
and intercultural hub, offering an excellent and conducive environment
for the teaching and learning of the Portuguese Language like no other
place in Asia.
