Lecture on European Union

The Department of Portuguese is organizing a series of lectures delivered by Dr. António Menezes, former Ambassador of the EU. The first lecture entitled «The European Union and its institutions and Portugal´s integration in the EU» was held on October, 29, 2012, at the premises of the Faculty of Languages and Literature, Goa University.

 

The second lecture to be held on November, 7, 2012, from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm at the Arts Faculty Seminar Hall, block B, will deal with the eurocrisis and how the EU is overhauling its institutions to resolve its current problems. It will also look at the EU as a world player.

 

ANTONIO de SOUZA MENEZES  hails from Goa-Velha, Goa. He Studied at St. Xavier s College, graduated from the University of Bombay in Political Science and post-graduate in Labour Relations. He did further studies in Business Administration at New York University on a scholarship from the US State Department. His 24 year career in the BBC, London in journalism and management ended as Head of the Portuguese Language Service from 1975 to 1987.   On Portugal s accession to the European Community in 1986, he was appointed Head of the EC Representation in Portugal. This was the period when Portugal negotiated the structural funds and introduced Community legislation that modernized the country. He later served as the Head of Press and Information at the EU Delegation in Japan. In 1993 he moved to the EU headquarters in Brussels as Head Information of ECHO, the Humanitarian Agency of the EU.   He ended his career in the EU as its Ambassador to Bangladesh in 2001.   He maintains his links with the EU as a member of the panel of election observers in various parts of the world.
