     "The atmosphere protects the earth from meteoric bombardment. The moon is constantly bombarded by meteors and is pockmarked by them. One thousand million meteors enter the earth's atmosphere daily, at the speed of 26 miles per second. At that speed, one grain of sand would kill man like a bullet. But the oxygen in the earth's atmosphere burns up the meteors before they can do any harm."
