"מזמור שיר ליום השבת, טוב להודות לד'..."

Rabbi Avigdor Miller, ZT''L said the following words: "Ice is bread. Snow is bread." What did he mean by that?

"Concerning the snow, Rava said: "A snowfall is better for the mountains than five rains." The precious white blanket persists on the fields all winter. And then it melts gradually, most of its water soaking into the soil, instead of running off as the rain does. When the springtime approaches, the snow melts gradually and supplies water for the new season of vegetation. It is like a blanket which keeps you warm all night, and in the morning it can be eaten for breakfast. That is precisely the function of snow: it keeps the earth warm all winter, and it melts away in the springtime to give the new plants a start."

Thus bread, and in fact all grains, fruits, vegetables, and plants, are direct results of the snowfall. Thank You, Hashem, for the snow!

The Marvelous Wonders of Creation, by Rabbi Mordechai Menachem Reich ZT"L (Mordechai Menachem Mendel -en Dovid Aryeh), adapted from the works of Rabbi Avigdor Miller, ZT'''L
