"The place of the eye is arranged on the highest position of the body, together with the other sense organs, in order to see and perceive from afar. It is safely recessed in a protruding bone frame, which protects it from blows. It is furnished with a lid, which rolls down automatically whenever an object approaches, and which rolls up conveniently out of sight when not in use. The eyelids cleanse and polish the eyes, strengthen their vision, and protect them from tears, foreign objects, and bright light. The eyelashes also contribute to the eyes' protection. The eye is continuously being bathed in a soothing and antiseptic fluid, supplied by the wells of the tear ducts. Each component of the eye: lens, retina, optical nerve, tear duct, eye liquor, cornea, pupil, iris, eye muscles, nerves, sclera, and others... are of enormous complexity, some possessing millions of parts."
