Is three-column CSS design of fixed center and fluid left/right really impossible?!

As noted above, it's been said that those combinations cannot be
implemented in pure CSS. Sounds unbelievable! But till now I have not
found any solution.
Say how to do this:
left(auto) -- center(760px) -- right(auto)
