A few people have already joined, so lets get started in getting to
know each other.

Who are you, what do you do, what have you built, and what do you want
to build?

Hello,
I am Dylan, I am an undergrad at the University of Mary Washington
majoring in Computer Science and English. I'm a bit of a newby to
programming, but I'm eager to help out wherever I can on these
projects, even if it's just bug hunting and making documentation.

I'm very interested on working on the stat keeper, and would love to
extend it in the future so that the collected stats can be viewed,
compared and have analyses run on them. Not sure how that would work
exactly, but its an idea anyway.

I'll start this off. My name is Mark Liu and I'm one of the two co-
founders of Leaguevine. And I do this full time :).

In terms of web stuff, Leaguevine is the only really interesting thing
I've built. The first couple iterations of it were pretty terrible as
I learned the ropes, but it's quite solid now and I'm building it for
the long haul. Other than that, I've built my blog, a bunch of simple
sites for organizations I've been involved with like Engineers Without
Borders, and some non-web stuff for my Masters degree where I wrote
some image processing algorithms.

In general, I just want to build cool web apps to make the online
experience for recreational athletes more fun and engaging. I'm
excited about helping build this community of Open Source developers
working on building Ultimate apps (possibly other sports too in the
future, but that is way down the line). I feel like this collaboration
will be an effective and fun way to give back to our community in a
very meaningful way. Even though these Open Source projects won't
generate any revenue for Leaguevine, I'm confident that the indirect
benefits of having these apps built on top of our public API will
totally worth the effort.

More specifically, the stuff I'll focus on building is the backend.
I'll make sure the API is as easy to use as possible, works well, and
is always up. The apps built on top of it will be left to the rest of
you for the most part, but I'll be happy to contribute to some things
here and there. I'll also make sure the web interface for Leaguevine
data is working well, so when we build things like real-time stat
taking apps, there will be a real-time box score anyone can see on our
website.

Hey Everyone,

I know Mark from UCLA. I think I'm here because I expressed some
interest to Mark a while back in creating an app similar to Ultistats
(http://ultistats.com/) for the Android platform but I never really
got that off the ground. With that being said, I'm willing to work on
whatever direction we go, whether it's stats, scoreboard, or anything
we think of along the way.

As for my background, I'm a programmer by hobby, not by trade. But I
have played around with and learned many languages and I am very
comfortable picking up new ones. I mainly use scripting languages at
work to help with my daily tasks. I'm willing to work on frontend or
backend, wherever I am needed. Ruby is my language of choice but I've
also spent (relatively) significant time with C/C++, Java, Fortran,
Matlab, and VBA, and at least partially dabbled in Lisp, Go, and a
couple others.

I have a website (www.rajsahae.com) that I made when I was playing
around with that sort of thing, but I don't maintain it.
I'm also on github (https://github.com/rajsahae) which I update more
than the website, but that's not saying much.

I look forward to contributing to a community effort and learning lots
of things along the way.

Hi all, I'm not an Ultimate player, but my sister is and when she put
me in touch with Mark through Twitter I thought it would be a great
way for me to support her and the sport.

I've been a web developer for over 10 years, doing everything from a
travel booking site in Cold Fusion (ick) to command line tools in
perl, and for the last few years I've been working in PHP, with both
custom frameworks as well as community-based ones like Zend and Drupal
(at my current job). The best part about what I do is that I can do it
fully remotely: my job is in SF and I live on the outskirts of
Sarasota, FL. Aside from my job, I've done a couple Drupal modules and
some very old stuff on github: https://github.com/kziv

I'm looking forward to doing anything involving PHP or front end work,
so it sounds like the scoreboard app would be the best place for me to
start, but I'm open to anything really!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Andrew. I used to play ultimate with Mark back at UCLA. I'm otherwise known as Straightjacket. haha.

I've made an Android app before (CloudList) and I'm currently at the school of information at UC Berkeley. Expanding my skills in ui/ux/design/web development. Languages I know and continue to work on include php (zend, codeigniter), javascript (jquery), python (django), java(android), html/css, mysql, umm i think that's all the relevant ones.

Projects i've worked on/currently working on include: www.affordcare.org and groups.ischool.berkeley.edu/secretsanta (although secret santa mostly stopped for now since xmas has passed, it was a class project I worked on for a few weeks)

Due to time constraints, I probably can't commit a whole lot of time in helping taking charge in the direction of the project/api, but I'm happy to be a code monkey.

Hey guys,

My name is Ty Thorsen. I'm a Carleton College '09 CS grad. I played
for the CUT, and for the past three years I've captained the Carleton
alumni mixed team that plays in the Central region.

Professionally, I work in the health insurance industry doing back-
end, mainframe business processing type stuff which probably won't
help us much here unfortunately. I do have quite a bit of experience
with Java, which I would say is my strongest language, and I'm also
fairly comfortable with python and C++. I have not done web
applications before, so I'm really looking forward to this as a
learning opportunity for me.

I love ultimate and I'm thrilled at the prospect of helping build
tools for the ultimate community. I look forward to working with you
all.

Hello,
My name is Chadwick Boulay. I wrote ultistats for iPhone. I'm working
on a web app version (HTML5/CSS3/Javascript) that will interact with
the Leaguevine API. This introduction will be a little longer than the
others because (I think) I'm a little further along in the development
process than some.

My programming experience is mostly MATLAB. I also have some
experience in Objective-C (UltiStats), SQL, PHP, and a tiny bit of C/C+
+. Mostly MATLAB. I'm a postdoc in Japan and I research the effects of
Brain-Computer Interface use on stroke rehabilitation. I'm writing my
next work experiment in Python, which is new to me, but there are some
great tools written by some of my colleagues (BCPy2000) so I hope to
learn it quickly. I also have a 4 month-old daughter and some
lingering papers from my PhD. I am busy but I am finding a bit of time
to work on this app.

I hope to get help from some of you. I'll be posting the app to the
Leaguevine github once I have a few working 'screens' and can
demonstrate that the performance is adequate such that native apps
won't be necessary. I hope this turns out to be true because
developing for iPhone is a bit of a pain, and I don't think code
written with the iPhone SDK ports easily to the Android SDK. I'm also
excited at the prospect of getting this to work on other platforms
(Win8 especially) without any more code.

I'm writing the HTML and CSS3 overtop the HTML5 boilerplate offered by
h5bp.com/mobile
I'm writing the Javascript modules overtop the demo app from google
called WebStoragePortabilityLayer / Simplenotes.
If you would like to work with me on the web app, please take a look
at those. I'm trying to make the app as modular as possible. This
provides great opportunity for collaboration but also requires that
each module's interface be consistent. I am not far enough along in
development to know what parameters to pass to each interface method
and therefore cannot benefit much from collaboration just yet. I will
let you know as soon as I can.

One thing that will benefit the stats-loving ultimate-playing
community almost immediately is a program that will take UltiStats for
iPhone data and upload them to the Leaguvine API. Due to a series of
horrible coincidences, I don't have the UltiStats source code beyond
version 0.8 (which isn't much like the current version). I can't
update the current version and I can't replace the current version
without erasing everyone's data. Therefore the only way to get the
data out is with the e-mailed CSV files, or to jailbreak the phone and
access the SQLite file UltiStats uses. I encourage anyone here to make
a program to recombine the CSV files then upload the data to the
Leaguevine API. This won't be easy because the data contained within
the CSV files are sparse and thus user input will be required to
provide some information about the files. Somebody from discspace.com
(maybe dmo) told me he already had an app that worked with the CSV
files and converted the data to JSON. He didn't seem like he was too
protective about it so it might be worthwhile to give him a shout (dmo
@ the domain name I mentioned).

That's all (/s) for now.

hey everyone,

I'm Roger Wang, the other co-founder (currently part-time) of Leaguevine.  I'm a high school friend of Mark's.  My full-time job right now is as a mobile software engineer, mostly working on Android, specifically Bluetooth, which I've been doing for about four years.  Most recently i've built a few Bluetooth related features (although not consumer-facing), and am now working on a new technology called Bluetooth Low Energy.  Most of my experience is in Java and C/C++, and I'm learning python/django.

For Leaguevine, I'm currently working on a test framework for the API, to make sure it will be (hopefully) robust and bug-free for everyone to use in their apps.  After that, I plan on working on the mobile app that we'll use for recording real-time Ultimate stats.

I'm actually not an Ultimate player, although I do play volleyball regularly (mostly beach, some indoor hardcourt).  I'm a big sports fan and stats geek though (recorded stats for my softball team, created a complex fantasy basketball ruleset/league, read a lot of sabermetrics/sports quantitative analysis), so this kind of stuff is right down my alley.  I'd like to build our platform to eventually get to the point where we can do all kinds of advanced metrics and even fantasy leagues for Ultimate.

I look forward to working with everyone.

Hi everybody,

I'm Pete, and I'm a mobile software developer. I've only been doing it
for about a year and my experience is very specific to what my company
does, so there's a good chance I'll be completely unexperienced in
whatever people end up working on. I mainly work in C# and SQL/Oracle
databases. Basically we synchronize a bunch of data from a database,
have a GUI that works with the data and an API, and then syncs it
back. The software is on laptops (not phones) so I don't really have
experience with mobile devices.

Anyway, I've been interested in Leaguevine because I usually spend
nationals hitting refresh on three different websites and trying to
see the most up to date scores. It would be nice to have that in one
place that doesn't crash from overuse (thanks score reporter). I'm
working on actually going to nationals so I don't have to watch the
numbers, but even if I go it'd be nice to have updates on my phone.

Also I kind of know Karen's sister and I am interested in Roger's
fantasy basketball (and ultimate) league...

I'm Bill Mill, a software developer at an internet startup. I'm also a club ultimate player; last year I was the captain and coach of Medicine Men, an open team from the Baltimore/DC region.

I generally code in python, ruby, and/or javascript. I wrote a pretty popular HTML5 canvas tutorial: http://billmill.org/static/canvastutorial/ , and lots of other stuff: https://github.com/llimllib http://billmill.org. I'm on twitter @llimllib.

@Chad: put whatever you have on github! That way I can at least annoy you by filing issues? I have often thought of making an HTML5 version of the ultistats iphone app (which I have used as a coach), so I hope I've got something useful to bring to the table.

Hello everyone,

My name is Mat, and i've actually already built an app in html5/css/
javascript that syncs with a server. You can see it here: http://www.ultiapps.com/.
I've been talking with Mark for the better part of today, and it seems
we want to accomplish the same things. I'd be willing to post the code
open source somewhere if you think it'd be a good idea. I've never
done an open source project before, but I've heard github is great for
something like this. If you'd like to tryout some test data i have in
there, the account al...@ultiapps.com and password of ttlshiw will get
you in. I will be using phonegap to compile it onto the various
devices. If you go to my page you'll see a better description of what
i can provide here.

I'm a programmer by trade and having dealt with many high level teams
have heard many suggestions on what to do with ultistats. I took some
initiative and programmed my own when i saw the other one's
development had slowed down. The languages i've programmed in are php,
asp, asp.net, c++, c, java, and javascript, for databases languages
i'm fluent in access, mssql and mysql. Most of my programming in the
past ten years has been geared towards web development.

I'm unsure to where to go from here, but i've basically created what
you guys seem to be looking for. If you have any questions please feel
free to ask.

As for ultimate itself, i currently play Open in canada and will be
trying out for TC this spring. I'm in contact with some friends i have
on goat/furious as to what they would like to see in the app, and i
use my own teams (phoenix) captains as resources as well.

Hey - My name is Moses and play on Furious George. I'm currently reworking
the Furious website and would like to add functionality to easily get game
results onto our own site, as opposed to directing traffic to another site.
I'm thinking a set of widgets that teams can embed on their own sites.

I'll also be speaking to Skip Sewell from Sockeye this week who is working
on a bigger project to get elite teams to increase their online presence. I
could see some new use cases coming from that conversation.

I've been a professional programmer for 10+ years - First as a C++
programmer in the video games industry, and now as a PHP programmer in
online travel. I'm familiar with a bunch of other languages as well.

Looking forward to working on this project and am hoping we can get the top
teams around the country to use this soon.

Hi All,

I saw the post on RSD and I'd be interested in helping.

My development experience dates to a couple years majoring in Comp Sci
in college until I got wise and switched to Operations Research, which
is applied math and statistics, more or less. I've done work in
application development for software in Java and C++ back in the day,
but more recently I've done web development using PHP and JavaScript.
I'm also familiar with a few stats/math related languages that are
probably not going to be useful (SAS, R, SQL, etc.). I also have an
interest in collecting stats from ultimate games and trying to develop
some more advanced metrics in addition to the development that would
help with organization, tracking, and outreach.

My ultimate experience includes 5 years playing mixed club in the UPA/
USAU series in North Carolina with TAU and in Michigan with Overhaul.

I'm not quite sure yet how much time I'll be able to devote to active
development but I'd love to give some time when I can and also help
with testing and review and that sort of thing as well.

Thanks,
Ben

recorder app I called Statastic (http://downchrisdown.com/statastic/),
only to then be told that UltiStats existed. :)

I'm not sure how much free time I'll have to dedicate to this project,

Hi, I'm Daniel Poindexter. Professionally, I've done nothing but web
application development. I took an unusual path, starting with visual
design, which turned into HTML and CSS, which turned into Javascript,
which turned into database and back-end code. So I have a pretty good
handle on how the pieces of the web stack fit together.

Most of my back-end development has been in C# using the ASP.NET MVC3
framework. I'm also fluent in Javascript and most of the major front-
end frameworks (jQuery, jQuery UI, Backbone, Knockout). I can handle
SQL databases and have used MongoDB for a few projects. I've also done
a lot of user interface design for web apps. I haven't really done any
open-source work to speak of.

I'm most interested in hosted applications using HTML5, so Chadwick,
what you're doing with Ultistats sounds great. My interest in
contributing comes from many years of playing Ultimate -- originally
with the University of Texas, and subsequently with Austin's
Doublewide for the past six years. I'm one of the few strategy/stats
geeks on the team.

I've been playing Ultimate for 13ish years and have never played for the same club team in consecutive years.  I've been to Mixed and Open Club Nationals, and made it to semis in 2008 with ACS.

I've been coaching Hopkins High School for 7 years, where we've won 5 state championships and 1 USAU (UPA) championship.

I also started a social commerce software company called 8thBridge in 2008.  We've raised a bunch of money and have 30 employees and a killer roster of customers, like Delta Air Lines, Target, Best Buy, Ticketmaster, etc.

Some say my biggest claim to fame is dating a celebrity fairy.  My girlfriend is Twig the Fairy and I've helped build her Facebook page to over 220k fans http://www.facebook.com/twigthefairy

I also admin The Ultimate Page on Facebook that has over 110k fans on it, where I share ridiculously inconsequential things that has led to it becoming the biggest community of ultimate players online: http://www.facebook.com/TheUltimatePage

Hey all,

I'm Sean. Currently I'm pursuing a masters in electrical/computer
engineering at Iowa. I've played at Iowa for the last 5 years and will
be helping coach this season.

My focus has been in software. C++ is my go to but I have a fair
amount of experience in Java, C#, and Matlab. I have a little less
experience with Linux scripting, PHP, SQL, and OpenGL (4.0). I've
worked on enterprise level applications on both the front end and
database during internships. More recently I've worked on software for
distributed simulations and vehicle operation studies in a lab on

I may be a bit busy this semester with travel and my thesis, but my
only real class is an Ipad/iPhone/iOS development class that I'm
taking with another ultimate player (undergrad ECE student). I'm
assuming at least half the class will be some large project so we may
be able to help out as part of our schoolwork.

I can't wait to see what comes out of this group.

Hi ultimate nerds :-)

I'm Christian Schaffner, postdoc researcher in quantum cryptography at
the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Europe. I've been
playing ultimate for a few years now and since I've moved to Amsterdam
about four years ago, I've been involved in the organization of
Europe's biggest (and most fun) Ultimate tournament on grass, the
Windmill Windup in Amsterdam: http://www.windmillwindup.com . In
particular, I've been taking care of the special Swiss-draw format
that is nicely described on Mark's post here:
http://leaguevine.com/blog/18/swiss-tournament-scheduling-leaguevines-new-algorithm/
I believe that there is lots of potential in this format and
leaguevine will help us to make it easier to use it at other
tournaments as well.

Together with Les Kleuver, we've been developing our own scoring app:
https://github.com/lkleuver/stallcount9 using PHP and Doctrine, which
we used successfully at last year's edition of Windmill Windup, but
we've decided to stop development and go with Leaguevine for this
year's edition in June 2012.

I'm a mathematician by training, I'm using MATLAB and Mathematica for
work, but I'm always interested in learning new programming languages.
I'd like to have a closer look at Python/Django in the coming months.

My two main interests for the moment are:
* the public-screen project
* finding the "best" format for an Ultimate Tournament
I will start separate discussion threats in this group about these two
topics soon.

Cheers,
Chris

Hey everyone
Current CS grad student at UWisconsin - know Mark from Madison.
Couple years industry experience doing healthcare software stuff
before grad school. Coincidentally, know Ty from college also,
carleton GOP '09. I play mixed frisbee in and around Madison.
Not much experience directly related to web/mobile stuff, but eager to
learn. Comfortable with databases, scalability/performance stuff,
etc. Interest and experience in data visualization (aka graphs).

Hi -
I'm an iOS (iPhone/iPad) developer with a passionate interest in Ultimate.  I recently created an iPhone app and website ( http://www.ultimate-numbers.com/ ) for capturing and reporting ultimate team statistics.  I planning on developing an interface to LeagueVine so that users who have capturied stats on our iPhone/iPad app will be able to upload game scores to LeagueVine.

That's great. I recently took UltiStats off the App Store. I've received a few e-mails from people looking for an offline-only solution. Your app seems like a great alternative. Are you going to build Leaguevine integration directly into the app? If so, and if you want to build an app for Android too, and Win8, then I can retire from the web app.

Hello all,

I am a recent graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology (a small college in Boston, MA) with a BA in Computer Science. I am currently a software engineer for a robotics company known as QinetiQ North America who is responsible for putting robots on the market like the TALON (engineering robot in Battlefield 3) and MAAR (possibly going to be in the new Metal Of Honor). Check them out, they are pretty cool robots:

I have been programming for about 5 years give or take. My specialty is in C, C++, C# and, although I don't care for it too much, Java. I also dabble in about 10 other languages and can pick up a new one in a couple weeks.

I played ultimate for 4 year with WIT (aka Concrete Jungle) and now I coach them. Between work, and coaching I will not have a ton of time to do a lot of development here but I will be happy to do what I can.

I like to work on back end systems, but will work on front end if necessary. I am currently working on an Android application to help me coach and call lines. I know there are solutions for stat keeping but I am much more interested in managing calling line (with a little side of stat keeping).

In the professional world,
Kyle Lapatin
In the ultimate world,
Patin

Hi everyone!

I'm Ben. I've been playing Ultimate for many years and heard about the opportunity to help build an Ultimate-related app on Facebook. I've worked as a developer for about 10 years, mostly for startups, but also for the occasional bigger company that acquired those startups. Most of my background is in mobile (one of the startups was basically trying to build Android, but didn't have Google's resources or the luck to pull it off), and I have quite a bit of experience with Android. More recently two of my friends and I founded our own startup (https://gatherball.com), where I build much of the backend and pretty much all of the web front-end. I'm excited to help out however I can!

Good morning Ultimate-heads,

My name is Jay and I am a Mechanical Engineer at an Oil and Gas tools company (for now).  I am originally from Nebraska where ultimate was surprisingly big, since there isn't much else to do up there.  Now I am in Fort Worth, Texas and play in the city rec league along with pickup 3 days a week.  I graduated from TCU (Go Frogs) in 2011 and used to be on their club team.

Now I am a ME so my software experience is limited but I'll still help in anyway I can.  I do manage an Access database here at work, as well as an OPS-online database.  I've had limited experience in C++, Visual Basic, and MATLAB.  As far as responsibilities I'm not sure where I'd fit in best but I do manage various projects at work (mechanical/electronic measurement systems).  I am also curious to see the hardware we will be using along with the programming tools.

Looking forward to seeing how this project develops.

Regards,

Jay Waxse

Hello,

I'm Brian and I primarily do back-end web site and web application development. I graduated from SRU where I played on the club team in 2010. Lately, I haven't been doing much playing due to a broken elbow.

Working on this ultimate fantasy app is going to be a ton of fun. I usually build APIs but can really do any kind of back-end development. I can also do front-end development to a limited extent.

Hola everyone, my name's Orion (like the constellation). I co-founded a restaurant review social network called Fondu which we recently sold to Airbnb. Naturally, now I'm a jack-of-all-trades (marketing, data science, PM, front-end, back-end, accounting) but master of none haha. These days, I'm just looking for interesting new things to work on--both professionally and on the side. I'm also the tech guy behind the scenes at Ultiworld.

Anyway, just found this group and wanted to say hello! Love what y'all are doing here at Leaguevine in general and in trying to unite+strengthen the ulti-dev community. Very excited to see what comes of this fantasy app! Let me know if there's ever anything you guys think Ultiworld could help out on.

Welcome to the group Orion! Do you want to dig through the fantasy ultimate messages and let us know if you see any opportunities to jump in and contribute?

Thanks!!
