Large numbers of markers and browser performance

Are there any recommended techniques to deal with the performance impact of large numbers of markers?

I have a map loading around 3000 markers I need to display. The initial load time to display the map is tolerable, but changing zoom levels or panning around the map results in a long wait of 10-20 seconds in order for the map to be usable again.

Marker clustering might be something worth looking into for you. There are examples of 50 k points:
